  • General greetings for your peers, for women older than you and for men older than you.
  • The various greetings for different times of the day (morning, afternoon, evening and night) and how to respond.

Let's Ẹdo'lize it: An Ẹdo Language Podcast
EP1 So, is it Ẹdo, Bini or Benin language?

In this first episode, we clarify the old age question "What is the difference between Ẹdo and Bini?" First, we looked at the different contexts in which the terms (Ẹdo and Bini) are used and by whom. Then we went on to address the origin of the term "Bini" and ultimately, we agreed on the terms that will be used on this podcast.

If you have a question about something on the podcast, please feel free to drop me a message. I’d be happy to help you in any way I can.

Wa hia Ọbokhian: The Introduction

Wa hia Obokhian. Welcome to “Let’s Ẹdo’lize it: An Ẹdo Language Podcast". In this introductory episode, we talk about the goal of this podcast, how it’s structured, and how you can make the best out of its content as a learner. You also get to know the host, Steffy Uwaifo, who has been promoting Edo culture and formally teaching Edo language for the past five years through her platform Ẹdo Language Institute (online classes, YouTube videos, Instagram and Facebook). A new episode will be released every two weeks. Every now and then, guests (Ẹdo students, Ẹdo teachers, Ẹdo scholars, and Ẹdo personalities) will also be featured in the episodes.

HOW TO MAKE THE BEST OF THIS PODCAST:

  • Open your mind to a different world view and new ways of expressing oneself English: My room is clean Ẹdo: Uhugha (room) mwẹn (my) ma (is not) gbihuẹn (dirty) = my room is not dirty
  • Forget articles ➡ (the. le. la. der. die. das) Example English: The boy that/which we saw yesterday. Ẹdo: Ọvbokhan-Okpia ne Ima miẹre vbẹ enodẹ.
  • Remember that Edo language is still developing Ẹdo language is not standardized (yet) There are no Ẹdo words for many things in modern society ➡ opportunity for word new creation

FOUR SIMPLE TIPS FOR MORE SUCCESS IN YOUR LEARNING

  1. Become deliberate in listening to people speaking Edo (aka Bini). STOP ZONING OUT!
  2. Ask your Edo parents/relatives or Edo spouse to speak Edo with you! E.g., suggest a challenge Idea “24h of speaking only Edo in your household!”
  3. Take advantage of Edo popular culture that you enjoy (Edo cultural dances, Edo rap Edo movies etc.).
  4. Get yourself some Edo learning materials and resources (books, flashcards, courses etc.)

Hope you will come around here very often and join the conversation.

If you have a question about something on the podcast, please feel free to drop me a message. I’d be happy to help you in any way I can.
