En 1920, dans Au-delà du principe de plaisir, il avait soutenu qu’il n’y a pas seulement les pulsions de vie, les pulsions sexuelles, mais qu’il faut aussi compter avec la présence d’une autre pulsion opérant en silence, ramenant l’individu à un point fixe, sans déplacement possible, sans mouvement, ce qu’il analyse dans la névrose traumatique et la compulsion de répétition. Freud aborde de plusieurs manières, à l’aide de diverses notions, ce qu’il appelle « pulsion de mort ».
