Silver Bullets Podcast: Penn State rewind and Purdue preview
Ohio State needed a half to return from its bye week but the Buckeyes were able to pull away from the Penn State Nittany Lions after halftime. Julian Sayin threw more touchdowns than incomplete passes, and his receiving corps continues to practice surgery on opposing secondaries. We broke down the Buckeyes’ 38-14 win over the Nitts, which could have been even more lopsided had forward progress been a thing or if C.J. Donaldson had been a bit more possessive of the pigskin. We checked to see how our picks to click performed on Saturday, and we looked back to see how our final score predictions panned out. After our Penn State rewind, we looked around the rest of the B1G to see how the other teams in the conference made out over the weekend. The surprise banger was Michigan State at Minnesota. I didn’t say it was a brilliant game, but it was entertaining, at least toward the end. Indiana got some initial resistance from Maryland and then blew the Terps away. USC handled Nebraska on the road, but even with an injured Dylan Raiola it wasn’t easy. Purdue also didn’t make things easy on Michigan in Ann Arbor. Once again, there are plenty of intriguing matchups coming up this weekend as the Big Ten season enters its final trimester. Finally, we previewed Ohio State’s visit to West Lafayette, Indiana. Weird things happen in the negative energy field at Ross-Ade Stadium, so the Buckeyes will need to overcome whatever strange contraptions the engineers at Purdue have come up with to level the playing field for their Boilermakers. We selected the players we are picking to click against Purdue on Saturday on both offense and defense and tried once again to predict the final score. We’re expecting the Boilermakers to put up a battle on Saturday but the Buckeyes should prevail as long as they don’t help their hosts. We would love to hear from you, so please reach out with your feedback and questions below in the comments section or send us an email at SilverBulletsPod@gmail.com. Any questions directed toward us will be answered on our next show. Be sure to subscribe, rate, review, share, and follow the show over on Twitter at @SilvrBulletsPod. As always, thanks for listening! 0:20 - A comfortable win over Penn State hasn’t been the norm in recent years, so the second half was a nice change of pace on Saturday. 27:40 - There was plenty of other action all around the B1G and we dive into it. 46:15 - The Buckeyes head to Indiana to take on Purdue. We preview the matchup. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Uncut: Jake Diebler discusses high-scoring, low-defense season opener against IU Indy
Throughout the season, Land-Grant will be bringing you uncut audio primarily from Ohio State press conferences, but also from individual interview sessions. Listen to the episode and subscribe Subscribe: RSS | Apple | Spotify | iHeart Radio On today’s episode of “Land-Grant Uncut” we take you inside the Ohio State media room at the Jerome Schottenstein Center for Monday’s post-game press conference following Ohio State’s 118-102 win over the IU Indy Jaguars, coached by first-year head coach Ben Howlett. Ohio State took an 8-6 lead 1:28 into the game and did not relinquish it, although the game never got out of hand. Diebler opened the press conference by acknowledging the unique pace the game was played at, with the two teams combining for 162 offensive possessions. He said that there will be teams this season that will slow Ohio State down, and there will be teams that challenge the Buckeyes defensively, but IU Indy was not one of those teams. He also acknowledged that allowing the Jaguars to shoot 50% from the field was “not acceptable” and will need to be addressed. In particular, Diebler said they did not do the best job closing out on three-point shooters, trapping too aggressively on one side and then not getting back over to the open shooter in time to prevent a shot. Christoph Tilly, who scored a career-high 28 points, and Bruce Thornton, who scored 26 points on 7-of-10 shooting, spoke for a few minutes before Diebler. Thornton and Tilly both said they didn’t like seeing the gaudy offensive numbers for IU Indy but that it does not feel like it’s anything that can’t be improved. Thornton said the pace of the game “felt like the NBA games he watches.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Off-Script Ohio: Buckeyes roll Penn State, Heisman buzz builds, and a Purdue tune-up ahead
On this week’s episode of Off-Script Ohio, brought to you by Land-Grant Holy Land, Cole VanWiechen and Joey Gertz dive into Ohio State’s 38–14 statement win over Penn State, a game that was far more lopsided than the score even suggests. From Julian Sayin’s near-perfect outing to the defensive dominance up front, the Buckeyes sent a clear message to the rest of college football, they’re playing complete, confident football with November approaching. The duo also touched on a chaotic weekend across the national landscape, previewed a potential trap-spot trip to Purdue, and ended with a few early hoops takes as basketball season tips off in Columbus. Statement saturday in Happy Valley As Joey put it, “This game had no business ever being close.” A controversial Donaldson fumble late in the first made the score to 17–14 at halfltime, but from there, Ohio State slammed the door. The Buckeyes outscored Penn State 21–0 in the second half behind flawless execution from their offense and smothering defense. Sayin finished 20-of-23 for 316 yards and four touchdowns, more scores than incompletions, while J.J. Smith and Carnell Tate both topped 120 receiving yards in a show of dominance against former OSU defensive coordinator Jim Knowles’ defense. Ohio State’s defensive front was every bit as impressive, holding Penn State’s backs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen to just 94 yards combined on 27 carries. Joey highlighted Eddrick Houston, Kayden McDonald, and Will Smith Jr. as key contributors in a front that generated seven tackles for loss. Cole took aim at the other big matchup of the day, Hartline and Day versus Knowles saying, “They absolutely cooked him. Knowles went man coverage against this receiver group, which we’ve seen before, and the result was the same. Sayin just picked them apart.” By the end of the game, the duo’s pregame wish list had been checked off. Hold Penn State under 14 points, drop 30+ on Knowles’ defense, and prove the Buckeyes can win with balance and aggression. Mission accomplished. While Ohio State looked elite, the rest of the top 25 had a weekend of survival. Georgia barely escaped Florida 24–20 in another uninspired showing, their sixth game this year being tied or trailing at halftime. Georgia Tech fell to NC State 48–36 in a shootout, Texas outlasted Vanderbilt 34–31 behind Arch Manning’s breakout, and SMU stunned Miami 26–20 in overtime. Oklahoma knocked out Tennessee’s playoff hopes, Utah blew out Cincinnati, and Michigan barely slipped past Purdue 21–16 — the same Purdue team Ohio State will visit next week. Next up, a trip to West Lafayette to face a struggling Purdue team sitting winless in Big Ten play. The Boilermakers’ only two wins came against Ball State and Southern Illinois, but they did push Michigan last week, losing 21–16. Running back Devin Mockobee leads the way with 520 yards and 4 touchdowns, while Georgia transfer Nitro Tuggle brings speed on the perimeter. Still, Purdue’s offense ranks 75th nationally, averaging 22 points per game, and their defense sits near the bottom 10 in both rushing and passing categories. Joey predicts a 42–7 final while Cole goes even bolder with 45–3. The show wrapped with a quick turn to basketball season, as Ohio State opens Monday against IU Indy. The Buckeyes added a strong freshman trio Amare Bynum, Mathieu Grujicic, and Myles Herro, plus four key transfers including Gabe Cupps and Christoph Tilly. With Bruce Thornton, John Mobley Jr, and Devin Royal all returning, both hosts expect a tournament berth and real March potential. Season predictions? Joey has 20–12 with a March Madness bid. Cole goes 22–10 and a Sweet Sixteen appearance, Ohio State’s first since 2014. Bold take of the week: Bruce Thornton, Second-Team All-American. John Mobley Jr. to lead the big ten in three point shooting. Theme music provided by Audiio. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Uncut: Ryan Day on it being personal as Jim Knowles comes back to Columbus
Throughout the year, the Land-Grant Podcast Network will be bringing you uncut audio primarily from Ohio State press conferences, but also from individual interview sessions. On today’s episode of “Land-Grant Uncut,” we are bringing you unedited audio from Ryan Day's Tuesday, Oct. 28 press conference from the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Coming off of a bye week and heading into a matchup with Penn State on Saturday, Day had a lot to discuss, but he started his media availability by remembering two Buckeye legends, Nick Mangold and Bob Maggs. Looking ahead to Saturday's matchup, Day said that while Penn State hasn't had the season that they anticipated, the Nittany Lions are still one of the most talented teams in the country, and they will be playing with nothing to lose against the Buckeyes. The head coach discusses how Josh Padilla is faring in the offensive line rotation, the evolving philosophy around the running game, the team's impressive APR and academic results, whether he got lost in a corn maze this weekend, and more. And while he remains political and magnanimous, Day does say that when assistant coaches choose to leave to take jobs at OSU's rivals, it does become a little personal; so we will see how the Buckeyes respond to having Jim Knowles back in The Horseshoe this weekend. As always, the press conference audio supplied by Ohio State struggles when it comes to media members asking questions. However, the audio quality from the podium is crystal clear. Silver Bullets Podcast: Remembering Nick Mangold, B1G results, and Penn State preview
Ohio State enjoyed its second bye week — or “improvement week,” if you like — over the weekend, while most of the rest of the conference kept playing. We took the opportunity to get a look at some of the remaining competition, but what seemed like a strong slate of games was a bit disappointing in the end. Before we went around the Big Ten to see how other teams made out, we discussed the tragic and untimely passing of former Ohio State center Nick Mangold, who lost his battle with kidney disease at far too young an age. Mangold was a monster in the middle of the OSU offensive line during his time in Columbus and enjoyed a productive NFL career as well. He also seemed to be well liked by just about everyone he interacted with. We pay our respects to the fallen Buckeye legend. After that, we looked around the B1G to see how the other teams made out. Reality set in for UCLA in the Hoosier State, with Indian taking the Bruins to the woodshed. Oregon surprisingly struggled against Wisconsin but did enough to get the win. The Wolverines won the Paul Bunyan Trophy in the battle of the Mitten State, and Rutgers picked up a vital win late after a wild Purdue turnover to stay in the hunt for a bowl berth. We didn’t expect Iowa to spank Minnesota, but that’s what happened. Nebraska also outlasted Northwestern as both teams tried to throw the game away late, but only one team could pull that off. We also looked ahead to the schedule that lies ahead on Saturday. There are always some intriguing matchups and this week is no exception. Finally, we previewed the big meeting with Penn State. It’s fair to say the season hasn’t gone according to plan for the Nittany Lions, but there’s no animal more dangerous than one that is wounded and cornered. Ohio State cannot take the Nitts for granted. Saturday’s visitors are talented, even if they haven’t had their way of things this season and their visit to Columbus will be seen as an early bowl game and a potential springboard for a decent finish to the season and an actual bowl game. We selected our picks to click in the game for the Buckeyes and tried our hand at predicting the final score. 0:20 - We remember the late Nick Mangold and take a tour around the rest of the Big Ten. 23:10 - It isn’t the Ohio State-Penn State game we envisioned, but it’s the one we have. Off-Script Ohio: Midseason Awards, Penn State Preview, and a Clearer Path to Indy
On this week’s Off-Script Ohio, brought to you by Land-Grant Holy Land, Cole VanWiechen and Joey Gertz used Ohio State’s bye week to take a breather, and take inventory. With the Buckeyes sitting undefeated and playing their most balanced football in years, the duo broke down their midseason awards, the national picture, and next week’s home matchup against Penn State. No surprises atop the leaderboard. Both Cole and Joey named Julian Sayin as Ohio State’s MVP, with the true freshman quarterback leading the Big Ten in completion percentage and yards per attempt. For Offensive Player of the Year, Cole leaned toward Austin Sierveld, praising the lineman’s consistency up front, while both agreed Jeremiah Smith has been the most dominant skill player in college football. On defense, Cole went with Arvell Reese, whose emergence as an every-down linebacker has anchored Matt Patricia’s top-ranked unit, while Joey gave the nod to Caleb Downs, who continues to erase mistakes on the back end. Bo Jackson was the unanimous Newcomer of the Year, having delivered game-changing versatility in both the run and pass game, while the coaching honors went to, who else but Matt Patricia and the defensive staff. The Surprise of the Year? For Joey, it’s freshman safety Jaylen McClain. Cole chose Lorenzo Styles Jr., who’s exceeded expectations at slot cornerback and solidified one of the best secondaries in the nation. Even with Ohio State idle, the playoff picture shifted. Ole Miss topped Oklahoma 34–26 behind an explosive showing from Winston Watkins and Kewan Lacy. Indiana continued its dominant run with a 56–6 rout of UCLA. Vanderbilt held off Missouri in a defensive slugfest, while Washington dismantled Illinois 42–25 behind four total touchdowns from Demond Williams. Down South, Texas A&M steamrolled LSU 49–25 in Death Valley, ending the Brian Kelly era in Baton Rouge, and BYU remained undefeated with a 41–27 win over Iowa State. The national race remains open, but increasingly, Ohio State and Indiana look like the Big Ten’s clearest playoff contenders. Next up: a reeling Penn State team (3–4) visits Ohio Stadium after firing head coach James Franklin earlier this month. Since a narrow Week 4 loss to Oregon, the Nittany Lions have dropped four straight, including defeats to UCLA, Northwestern, and Iowa, each one sealed by a late defensive breakdown. With quarterback Drew Allar out for the season, Penn State’s offense has sputtered, ranking 100th nationally in total yards. Ohio State enters as a 20-point favorite, and both Cole and Joey expect a businesslike performance. Joey predicts 31–10, with Bo Jackson eclipsing the 100-yard mark. Cole sees a slightly closer 27–10 final but expects the Buckeyes’ defense to continue its dominance. Next week, Off-Script Ohio will return with full coverage of the Penn State game, plus early looks at the Buckeyes’ playoff path and the start of Ohio State basketball’s new season after a 103–74 preseason win over Ohio University. No Fall Weddings: Was last year's Michigan loss the best thing to ever happen to Ohio State football?
Throughout the year, Matt Tamanini and Jami Jurich will be getting into all things Ohio State and college football on "No Fall Weddings." On the new episode of Land-Grant Podcast Network’s “No Fall Weddings,” Jami Jurich and Matt Tamanini discuss all things Ohio State off week. Then they ponder if the Buckeyes' fourth straight loss to Michigan, and specifically the players' reaction to it, shook Ryan Day out of his counterproductive pride and turned OSU into the best program in college football. Then, as always, the duo breaks down their top-12 teams in college football, makes their chaos picks of the week, and recommends something from outside the world of college football that you should check out.
