Kinda Murdery
Halloween Monsters: Ronald Clark O'Bryan
The seemingly-happy O'Byan family lived In Deer Park, Texas, in the 1970's. However, beneath the facade of suburban normalcy lurked the strain of desperate financial woes. Mr. O'Bryan's mountain of debt was so ovewhelming that it became a recurring topic of conversation among his circle of friends and acquaintances. In the summer of 1974, he alluded to an upcoming windfall, telling some people that he expected to come into a sum of money by the year's end. Given the tragedy that followed, his statements now hang in the air, fraught with chilling implications...

Kinda Murdery
American Monsters: Blanche Kiser
In 1966, Blanche's Kiser's father, Parker Davis Kiser Sr., passed away. His death was attributed to heart disease at the age of 62. Tragedy struck again in 1973, seven years following her father's death, Blanche discovered her husband, James Taylor, lifeless in their bed. At just 45 years old, he was pronounced dead, with a heart attack cited as the cause. The specter of heart disease seemed to loom over the men in Blanche's life. As our Kinda Murdery story unfolds, the circumstances surrounding these deaths beckon for a closer look, hinting at a deeper, perhaps darker, narrative playing out beneath the surface of Blanche Taylor's seemingly ordinary existence...

American Monsters: James Leeper
In 1990, based on circumstantial evidence alone, Jonathan Fleming was convicted of the murder of Darryl Rush and sentenced to 25 years to life despite having what Brooklyn prosecuting A.D.A. Twenty-four years later, it would be discovered that Leeper had withheld crucial evidence from the defense, and Fleming wasn't his only victim...Just what the hell was going on in Brooklyn?

Kinda Murdery
American Monsters: Greencastle Guillotine
On February 1st, 1893, an African-American teen named John Howling, walking to work in the morning, spotted a young girl, lying in the grass on the side of the road to Fort Thomas Kentucky. At first, John thought she might be sleeping, or worse, taken by the late-winter cold and freezing (or already frozen.) Howling approached and laid a hand gently on the girls shoulder to awaken her. Suddenly, Howling was howling. He let out a blood curdling scream. The girl was headless. John didn't know it yet, but he had discovered the body of beloved Greencastle, Indiana socialite, Pearl Bryan. She was obviously dead, but why had the killer decapitated her, and where was Pearl's head now? Find out on the latest episode of Kinda Murdery!

Kinda Murdery
American Outlaws: The Murder of Patrolman Masterson
The murder of Patrolman Masterson started out a a commonplace peak-easy stick-up in which a police officer and a girl were wounded, at 2 :55am on the morning of January 31st, 1927, in New York City. Masterson died on the evening of the same and was buried with full departmental honors three days later. But it was anything but commonplace. Kinda Murdery
American Monsters: Lance Robert Mueller
On September 15th, 2010, Texas Oil man, Greg Fleniken, died in his hotel room. Greg had a sterling reputation. The kind of standup, privately introverted man who everyone loved and respected. He had no enemies, and he wasn't a womanizer. There was no sign of forced entry, no sign of struggle, no sign of injury, none of his posessions had been disturbed, and no one had seen or heard anything out of the ordinary The ripple effects of Greg Fleniken's sudden death emanated far beyond his hotel room. For a man who valued his routines, failing to call his wife, Susie, in the morning was more than an oversight; it was an alarm bell. His silence set a series of events into motion. Concerned co-workers, unanswered knocks, an unlocked door—these were the first steps into unraveling what had happened in that room. Susie had been expecting a routine call, but instead, she set off a cascade of inquiries that led two of Greg's co-workers to his hotel room. Once the door swung open, what they found was a tableau of stillness, life interrupted. Greg lay prone, with a cigarette arrested in its journey to his lips. The room was suffocatingly warm, in stark contrast to Greg's preference for a cool environment...

Kinda Murdery
American Monsters: Matt Baker
In the wake of Kari Baker's funeral, the community turned its gaze toward Matt, her husband. A minister of just 35 years, Matt sat on the front row at the service, his demeanor a tableau of inconsolable sorrow. When he lifted his head from his hands, his eyes, a light blue hue that was almost startling, met the congregation's gaze.

After the eulogy, Matt found the strength to stand beside the pulpit, his two remaining daughters flanking him. With each hug and expression of condolences he received, he assured the congregation that he'd be back to preach on the most hopeful day in the Christian calendar—Easter Sunday. "God has not abandoned me," he whispered to one close friend, "He will give me the strength to carry on."

But something unsettling began to shift about a month later. Rumors surfaced that Kari's mother, Linda Dulin, backed by her sisters and niece, was conducting her own investigation into Kari's death. The whispers intensified when word got out that Linda and her husband, Jim, had engaged a lawyer and private investigators. This was puzzling to many; after all, the Hewitt police had been convinced enough of Kari's suicide that they hadn't even requested an autopsy...

The Murder of Dariusz Janiszewski with Anson Maddocks
In December 2000, in a remote area of the Oder River in Poland, three fishermen discovered a dead body, initially mistaken for a log, near the shore. The corpse, with a noose around its neck and hands bound, was identified as Dariusz Janiszewski, a 35-year-old businessman from Wroclaw, reported missing by his wife four weeks earlier. Janiszewski's body showed signs of torture, starvation, and drowning. Despite an extensive police investigation featuring scuba divers and forensic specialists, no significant evidence was found. Janiszewski, described as a gentle man and an amateur guitarist, had a stable personal life with no known debts, enemies, or criminal record. He and his wife were planning to adopt a child. The case remained a perplexing mystery with no apparent motive or suspects...

Kinda Murdery
American Monsters: Michael Lee Jones
In the early hours of a chilly winter morning in 2005, a grim discovery marks the beginning of a perplexing case that would haunt the western edge of Miami. Amid the transition where the orderly outer suburbia surrenders to the wild embrace of the Everglades, with its towering grass and dark, unforgiving mud, a scene unfolds that seems almost too brutal, too out of place. A local power-company worker, navigating through the routine of his day, drives by the desolate expanse of an unbuilt cul-de-sac. It's here, amidst the weeds and solitude, that he spots something. A young woman, merely 21, with long blond curls, lies facedown. She's naked, her body battered, an undeniable signal of the violence she endured, discarded at the very threshold of civilization and wilderness...

Kinda Murdery
American Monsters: Robert J. Moody & Walter Leroy Moody
Acknowledging that it sounded, “truly bizarre,” Robert J. Moody would say during his trial that, cocaine-pushing space aliens took control of his body and forced him to murder Michelle Malone, a friend, and Patricia Magda, a neighbor, in November 1993 to prove that aliens existed. The aliens told him that their mission required that he be convicted and sentenced to die but that he would survive a lethal injection, he testified Wednesday.
"After being declared dead, the extrasensory biological entities will bring me back to life to speak through me," he further insisted that his involvement in these crimes was involuntary. Space aliens were in control of his body, and he was merely an unconscious observer of the murders.

Say what now? Find out. Only on Kinda Murdery.

Kinda Murdery
Welcome to Kinda Murdery, a true crime podcast that’s mostly about murder, and always about the strange and compelling stories that arise when the path less traveled twists to darkness and those who walk its shadows surrender to violence and corruption. I’m your host Zevon Odelberg – we have a perilous journey ahead, so thank you for lending me, your courage and good company.
