Paul Downton:
For the very first episode of the revamped Kent Cricket Podcast, the show welcomes retiring Kent Director of Cricket, Paul Downton. In an extended listen, Paul provides a comprehensive insight into his varied career. From the trials of being ECB managing director, to what it was like being captained by the fabled Asif Iqbal.
The episode begins with a discussion about Paul’s playing days. Battling it out with (and learning from) celebrated keepers in Bob Taylor and, Kent favourite, Alan Knott. Playing in the 1987 World Cup Final, and what it was like touring with some of England’s most legendary characters.
The interview moves on to talking about Paul’s time working in cricket administration. The tests of taking over as boss of the ECB, during one of the organisation’s most tumultuous periods – post the infamous Ashes whitewash tour of Australia in 2013/14 – and he reveals the story behind his appointment as Kent’s first Director of Cricket.
The conversation took part on a very special day, Paul’s last at Kent. This is one that not only all Kent fans, but all English cricket fans shouldn’t miss!
