Dr Thami Mazwai is the founder of Mtiya Dynamics(MD), an enterprise and supplier development company. MD specialises in the design of small business development solutions. He is research associate at the Nelson Mandela University (NMU). He conceptualised, edited and in 2024 produced the book “The Journey of the Soweto Entrepreneurs since 1905”. This was an overview on the evolution of entrepreneurship in Soweto. The activist and former journalist expanded his craft of journalism to more than keeping society abreast of the happenings of the Apartheid era but furthered his craft and molded it into becoming a formidable instrument for the liberation struggle and the empowerment of Black people to participate in the post-Apartheid economy of South Africa. He is currently involved in efforts to stimulate the economies of townships, villages and informal settlements to assist in the eradication of poverty, unemployment and inequality. His interest in township economies started when he was still with the Sowetan newspaper where he started the business pages, the first newspaper aimed at the black community to do so. Morphing from journalist to researcher, he is driven by his passion for transformation that lessens poverty, unemployment and inequality (PUI).About the podcast: Kasi Business Podcast is powered by TEA. GG Alcock, the founder of Kasinomics. GG Alcock was born in Msinga, then one of the most poverty stricken and violent parts of KwaZulu-Natal. GG’s activist parents, Neil and Creina Alcock, raised their two sons in a mud hut with no running water, electricity or modern conveniences and they grew up like young Zulu boys. Zulu reared and bred, the boys learnt the essence of how to survive in a harsh world – valuable skills that have undoubtedly contributed to GG’s success as an entrepreneur.
GG considers himself an Economic Activist, excavating the silence and opening eyes to the invisible economies of our cities, kasi’s and rural homelands. He advocates for government and formal business sector recognition, support, empowerment and consideration of the informal economy and the kasipreneurs who represent the future for our economic growth.

Youth entrepreneurship evangelist Mashudu Modau is an influential voice in the small business community. As founder of Founders Sauce and podcast host at Lutcha – and Community Partnerships Manager at Yoco – he connects people and builds platforms to help African entrepreneurs grow.
I connect people & build platforms to help African creators grow.
Mashudu was born in Soweto in the early 90s, and was raised by his mother and three aunts. Although he never enjoyed school, he nevertheless explored his passion for making a social impact, launching “Big Sister, Big Brother” – a project aimed at encouraging matric students to mentor grade eights. Even at this stage, he was asking himself: “Why do I have to just accept things as they are? What can I do to find a better solution?”
At university, he began to feel restless and boxed in by his studies so he launched Paper Share: an online platform where South African students could download past exam papers for free. This experience introduced him to the entrepreneurship ecosystem, where he got to engage with incubators and accelerators to test and fine-tune his concepts. Although massively enriching, he found that existing workshops did not address the variety of needs of vastly different new businesses. He knew there had to be a better way.

Sibabalwe Sesmani is the Group CEO of Unorthodox Group. She public relations company in October 2014 called Unorthodox PR and Media Group. They specialize in placing our clients in front their target audience by using various media platforms. They have reach in Southern Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, UK and the USA. In 2020 they were given the opportunity to sign on a rugby World Cup winner, Makazole Mapimpi where they managed him from a media and brand endorsement perspective. They grew enough interest that they started getting interest from his teammates and also other professional athletes. They then saw a gap in the market with professional athletes not being properly represented from a brand perspective, that was then the birth of Unorthodox Sport. Unorthodox Sport was then started in October 2020 by Sibabalwe Sesmani, Makazole Mapimpi and a third director as shareholders in the company, majority being myself. In November 2020 they then signed Lukhanyo Am, the World Cup winning Springbok who facilitated in assisting Makazole break the record for being the first Springbok to score a try in a World Cup. Unorthodox Sport not only manages its clients from a brand perspective, but they also plan for retirement as professional athletes have short careers and we have seen horror stories of professional athletes being broke.
