JHP011 - The Shining Reflection

Kylie and Tom, as part of their first Halloween series, reflect on the 1980 horror / psychological thriller The Shining, how we were always the podcasters for the Overlook Hotel, and discuss:

 - The effect of isolation on the human mind and how this story, regardless of its paranormal aspects, succeeds as a suspenseful story on cabin fever

 - How this film was not respected upon release

 - How Wendy ends up fulfilling Jack's duties as caretaker for the hotel while sleeps in, works on his "novel", and shares drinks with the ghosts of the hotel. In addition, Jack failure in the role of husband and father existing before  his violent tendencies consumed him.

 - What is Jack's relation to the Hotel and how the Overlook collects the souls of its occupants

 - The pivotal bathroom scene and the use of red in the film adaptation

 - What is the deal with the woman in Room 237?

 - Stephen King's disdain for the first adaptation of his 1977 novel

Join us next week for the sequel, Dr. Sleep, set and released nearly 40 year later.

 - Harry's bizarre usage of the Imperius Curse on goblins and resulting destruction of Gringotts with the Ukrainian Ironbelly

 - How the Gringotts segment feels detached from the rest of the story taking place at Hogwarts

 - Wand allegiances and how they play into Voldemort's defeat

 - The mystery of Dumbledore's backstory and relation to his goat-loving brother, Aberforth, and his deceased kid sister

 - The return of many fan favorite characters / musical themes and crowd-pleasing moments in this final installment

 - Snape's enduring love for Harry's mother and all the knowledge he held onto all those years

JHP009 - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 Reflection

In this penultimate chapter of the Harry Potter series, we discuss:

- The decision by Warner Brothers to split the last book of the saga into two films, starting a trend in Hollywood

- Why Sorcerer's Stone beats all the other Harry Potter films, except the final installment

- How this film is unlike any other in the series by skipping Hogwarts and instead focusing on a character-focused road trip for the trio

- The hilarity of the Seven Potters plan and the shared father-son moment of sorts with Bill Weasley and his real life dad, Mad Eye Moody

- Hermione's grief reflected in where she chooses to hide with Ron and Harry from the Death Eaters

- Visiting almost every main character home: The Dursleys, The Burrow, The Granger residence, Malfoy Manor, Godric's Hollow, and the Lovegood residence

- Ron finally showing he is not as worthless as many think him to be

- Why we should have seen more of Dobby the House-Elf

JHP007 - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Reflection

The Harry Potter movies get increasingly darker and the Order of the Phoenix is no exception. We loved this movie and we were so excited to review this one that we watched it immediately after recording the fourth episode.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Whether Ms. Figg might secretly be a FireSquid
  • Luna’s similarity to Alice in Wonderland
  • Why it’s cringeworthy to see Umbridge’s performance reviews of all the other Hogwarts professors
  • How Harry’s lessons from the first four years play into the formation of Dumbledore’s Army
  • Why Sirius may have set him up for it
  • Ginny’s crush on Harry and other nods to the book
  • How this book/movie uses Harry’s arc to reflect depression and trauma

Tune in next week for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince…one of us actually may not have enjoyed that one.

JHP006 - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Movie Reflection

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Today we’re reflecting on the fourth movie in the Harry Potter Series. We cover topics such as:

  • Azkaban’s Dental plan
  • Voldemort, Tom’s most quotable character
  • How both of the Crouches ticks give them away
  • How Barty Crouch Jr. as Mad Eye Moody does more than just share the unforgivable curses with a room full of fourteen year olds; he reveals a great deal about their pasts as well
  • Ron is the most fanboy of fanboys in this movie and holding on to a lot of teenage angst
  • Considering how the Goblet of Fire would have worked as two movies instead of just one

We’ll be back again next week with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

JHP005 - Disney's Mulan (2020) Reflection

It was only after recording and seeing other reviews that we realized we had such an unpopular opinion on Disney’s latest live action adaptation. Today we’re reflecting on and sharing our different perspective on Mulan (2020).

In this episode, we talk about:

  • How this film is different than most Disney live action adaptations
  • The introduction of new characters and adaptations of old favorites
  • What we thought about the lack of musical numbers
  • Whether we think it’s worth spending the $30 on this movie

We don’t want to spoil anything here! If you’ve seen the movie, check out our spoiler-filled reflection (no pun intended) of Mulan (2020).

JHP004 - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Movie Reflection

Things start to look very different by the time Harry gets to his third year—and only partially because Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the first film in the series to get a new director.

In this episode we talk about:

  • Our thoughts on Harry being done putting up with the Dursley’s BS this year
  • How this year at Hogwarts is unlike any of the others so far
  • The specific musical score in this movie that stresses Kylie out
  • How freaking awesome the Marauders are
  • Tom’s Dementor impression
  • What memory we would use to conjure our patronuses—plus what form our patronuses would take
  • How, despite the fact that Harry looks like his father, he’s so much more like Sirius Black
  • Fear and Happiness
  • And so much more!

We’ll be back on Tuesday 9/8 with a bonus episode on Mulan (2020) from Disney Plus.

Yes, we decided it was worth the $30.

In anticipation of the release of the Mulan (2020) on Disney Plus, we have a fun bonus episode for the podcast. Today we’re talking Disney’s Mulan—the 1998 version. We’re huge Disney fans and had so much fun reflecting on this one in particular.

  • Why Mulan is so relatable
  • Our admiration of Shang’s serious skills when it comes to training a bunch of men who have no clue what they’re doing
  • Mulan’s quest for the greater good versus personal interest
  • The humor that makes its way into the movie we never noticed as kids
  • What we’re excited about in the 2020 life action installment

JHP002 - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Movie Reflection

In today’s episode, we’re reflecting on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. We’ve tried to rewatch the Harry Potter series so many times over the past five years and rarely seem to make it all the way through. Needless to say, we’ve watched Chamber more than we can count. This time around, we took an analytical eye to our reflection and had some insightful discussions about what we noticed during this watch.

In today’s podcast we discuss:

  • Tom’s highlights and faves from DC Fandome
  • The concept of legacy/fame as seen through those who crave it, those who are indifferent, and those who just want it for status
  • Questioning whether Dobby was just trying to protect Harry instead of making a bigger picture effort?
  • Why we appreciate Tyler Warwick for his impressions of Every. Single. Harry. Potter. Character. (Go check him out!)
  • How Dumbledore pulled a Michael Scott on Harry and Ron at the end
  • And so much more

JHP001 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Movie Reflection

Today we’re reflecting on one of the first movie in one of the most meaningful series to us: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. One of the rare times Kylie was way more into the movie than the popcorn.

In this episode, we discuss

  • How in 2020, Uncle Vernon would be labeled a “Karen”
  • The friendship of Harry, Ron, and Hermione from train car to facing a three-headed dog
  • Dumbledore’s quest for the greater good vs Harry's well-being
  • How Harry’s upbringing influences his relationships
  • Why Hagrid is the stand-out character of this movie (“Dry up, Dursley you great prune!”)
