E101: Jon Jarvis - Black Belt

Jon Jarvis is a Black Belt, and Owner of Kent Grapple basing in Sittingbourne, Kent. He started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in his early twenties after being inspired by a Head and Arm Triangle secured by Brock Lesner back in the day.

Jon started his competition career during his White and Blue Belt, and continues to build resilience of not giving up, through to his Brown Belt days when he commenced his journey into starting his own Jiu Jitsu school.

One of the challenges Jon is seeking to overcome is returning to competition. Many of us, as we continue our Jiu Jitsu journeys and progress through life may grow further away from the competitive nature of Submission Only and Competitions, however returning to grow our resilience as we age is something to consider.

Kieron Price is a White Belt training out of RGA Bucks in Aylesbury. He started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu because his daughters were already training, and he was encouraged to start his own journey. We talk openly about weight loss with Mounjaro and how much easier it is now to play Jiu Jitsu with less body fat.

Kieron started in martial arts in Pro Wrestling many years ago, started Jiu Jitsu back in 2012 and family responsibilities took more of a front row position until this year. Having goals for your Jiu Jitsu journey is something quite important, whether it is getting to a single class a week or achieving an advanced belt rank before you're 50.

Surprisingly, Kieron took the opportunity throughout the episode to ask me some questions. Not something I'm so familiar with, so take a listen!

Get your Limited Edition Rash guard celebrating the 100th episode of the JIU JITSU LOU Podcast. Before the 18th September! https://adaptjj.com/collections/unreleased

Paul Skivington is a Brown Belt and has been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for around 7 years. He came to the sport as a competitive player, having lost his leg at 23 and only gotten into sports again at age 30. Being a boxer and golfer and previously in the military, he realised that his identity was very much focused in the past. Like many of us he wished to be the best person for his children, and to learn to focus on the future.

Competing three weeks into his jiu jitsu career is a massive inspiration to any of us. One of Paul's goals for the future is to promote and support Para Jiu Jitsu here in the UK. To keep his cardio at a peak level, he trains on a Spin bike on a very regular basis, and anything that Paul now does has to contribute to his progress in Jiu Jitsu, especially to enable him competing at every level.

E093: Josh Vogel - Black Belt

Get your Limited Edition Rash guard celebrating the 100th episode of the JIU JITSU LOU Podcast. Before the 18th September! https://adaptjj.com/collections/unreleased

Josh Vogel started martial arts back in 1999, starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2003 realised it was something he wanted to do as a career, after moving on from skateboarding and Ninja movies.

Having been mugged and beaten up in his teenage years, learning Jiu Jitsu seemed like a good move, and being a creative, and realising that he wasn't going to be the best at what he was doing, wasn't going to turn out as a profession but Jiu Jitsu was.

Josh was inspired by the potential of practice, magic and visualisation of one day achieving his Black Belt, and no real limit to what he could achieve for his life. He shares the surprise of his achievement in this art, with his wife Ange, to-date, owning a Jiu Jitsu school, and much more.

The concept of 'filling buckets' for each position you may find yourself in, in Jiu Jitsu is really important, certainly for those of us at lower ranks of BJJ. Josh helps us to understand how to deal with the differences in training partners, when coaching kids, or even learning Jiu Jitsu ourselves.

Gavin Stewart is a Black Belt at 10th Planet Banbury, and at the time of recording has come back with yet another NAGA Belt! He shares his experience, where he gets the action going in the Directors category with 4 minute rounds. Clinch-based systems, and sub hunting is very much part of the 10th Planet learning.

Training Jiu Jitsu to get better, avoiding injury during this contact sport to train for longer in life is the priority. Jiu Jitsu and music are two of the things that Gavin has sustained over his years, over and above other activities, so there must be something in this sport.

Gavin has a vision for Grapple Worlds that goes above and beyond other invitationals, tune in to find out!

E088: Titus & Kerry - Core Jiu Jitsu

Titus Burton, Brown Belt and Kerry Davidson, Blue Belt join from their new Jiu Jitsu school Core Jiu Jitsu. This is Kerry's second appearance on the show, having appeared back on Episode 34 over a year ago as a White Belt. They both share their own unique journeys through Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Having jiu jitsu mats in the kitchen when you're a jiu jitsu couple sounds like it is something really great! Both Kerry and Titus have supported each other's progress, and truly value having someone there to ask and practice with. Especially when big group learning can be quite intimidating for any of us that struggle to break through our own comfort zones.

Kerry and Titus are the founders of Core Jiu Jitsu, and want to attract people that have a core belief and curiosity for starting, or coming back to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. They now have a welcoming and nurturing space based over in Higham, Kent that has been created with the utmost attention to detail. Go and check them out!

E084: Paddy Webber - Black Belt

Paddy Webber is one of the four Black Belts running Rising Tide Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Weston-Super-Mare having started his martial arts journey during his childhood with Traditional Jiu Jitsu, thinking that it was 'the real deal' back in the day. Paddy shares his story of being inspired by a 'cool guy', namely Ian Rossiter, now one of his fellow Black Belts at Rising Tide.

Balancing family life, running a Jiu Jitsu business as well as having a full-time job as a Grounds Keeper is now Paddy's priority. However, in the past he prioritised himself as a Jiu Jitsu Athlete, and appreciates that time now he has progressed through his career. We relate Paddy's previous trade/art of Joinery to Jiu Jitsu, and he talks of his new profession that allows him time to balance all of life. Eating well is the first step Paddy takes to accomplish his goal of achieving a Gold Medal at every belt.
