DAZ Studio 4.12 Beta – a Sneak Peek – 3D Shenanigans #25

On today’s stream I’ll take sneak-peek at the new features in the brand new beta version of DAZ Studio 4.12. It was released earlier this week, and it’s all about better animation tools: integrated features from GraphMate and KeyMate, and IK Chains inside a scene hierarchy.

The highlights in this version are:

* overhaul of the regular timeline* integration of the KeyMate and GraphMate functionality* addition of IK Chain feature for regular scenes* Viewport Performance setting finally defaults to “best” rather than “none”

There’s a complete list of new features is here, and the full changelog can be found here.

You can download the beta from here (it installs in parallel to the release version and will not affect your current settings or library).

Patreon Supporters can get download the scene files from this stream here.

Many thanks to Mike Myers for suggesting this topic for today’s stream ☝️

Trying out Chocofur Asset Management for Blender 2.8 – 3D Shenanigans #24

In this episode I’ll try to install the Chocofur Asset Management add-on for Blender. It’s recently been updated to Blender 2.8, but right now not so easy to find on their website. Chocofur have lots of free assets to try out, perhaps we can work out how this works together.

I was unable to get this thing going during the live stream, so I’ve made another video the next day to explain how to make it work.

The podcast episode is only the second part, which contains the solution to this mind bending puzzle.

Building a scene with dForce Magnets – 3D Shenanigans #23

In this live even I’ll show you how to use the dForce Magnets by Esha and Riversoft. I’ve had this question many times, perhaps my approach to using them helps to inspire you.

I’ll start with a demo of how to add magnets to an plane object and explain how this product differs from a regular rigid follow node. Then I’ll move on to building a bed scene in which I’ll drape a duvet/sheet over a sleeping character.

Measuring DAZ Objects with Blender (Distance and Circumference)

In this episode I’ll show you two ways of measuring the metrics of objects from DAZ Studio using Blender. We can measure the distance between two arbitrary points using the new Measure Tool, while we can measure the circumference of an object with the MeasureIT add-on.

DAZ also offer a plugin to do this, but it’s $50 and looks a tad intimidating to use.

Building the “Fluffy Disco Kimokawaii” Animation in Carrara – 3D Shenanigans #21

In this episode I’ll explain how I’ve made the Fluffy Disco animation that I’ve posted last week.

I’ll start by building the animation in DAZ Studio using aniBlocks, then import the file into Carrara and add the hair. Once applied, we’ll drape it and have Carrara simulate the strands as the figure dances.

You can buy Carrara here (it’s often on sale and available for $60 or less).

Here’s the animation I’m referring to in this stream:

An Overview of Strand Based Hair in DAZ Studio – 3D Shenanigans #20

On today’s live stream, I’m giving you an overview on how to get started with the new Strand Based Hair feature in DAZ Studio 4.11. It’s only been released to the public yesterday, and we have not many details on how to create handsome looking hair with this tool, but I’ll let you in on what I’ve been able to gather so far, including how dForce fits into the picture.

I’ve made a quick animation with this tool this removing, here’s a standalone version of it.

Building a Kitchen Comic Scene in DAZ Studio – 3D Shenanigans #18

In this live event I’ll show you how to build the above funny kitchen scene. It’s simple with several subtle nuances, such as lighting and expressions. I’ll explain how to add your characters, pose them, adjust the camera, and add appropriate (comical) expressions. Then we’ll adjust the lights of the set and add our own to add separation between the figures and the background.

Animating sunlight (SS Time) in DAZ Studio

I’ve recently explained how to make use of the realistic sun disk in DAZ Studio. I’ve talked about how to make this thing visible and how to set it to mood/effect you want, and I’m pleased with the results. This workflow works great for still images, but for animations, it quickly becomes clear that the SS Time parameter under Render Settings – Environment cannot be keyframed.

Or can it? Looks like it can, thanks to a little helper tool called the Sun Dial. Let me show you how it works.

Where is this thing?

The Sun Dial Set comes up in the Smart Content Tab under Files – Render Settings – Iray. You can also search for it to bring it up, just make sure you select “all files” at the top. It doesn’t have an icon. Apparently it’s not important enough (the poor thing).

Once loaded into your scene you’ll notice a selectable node in your Scene Tab. That’s good news, because as long as we can select it, we can usually animate it. The trouble with the SS Time parameter is that it or its parent is not selectable, hence un-animatable (if that is a word).

In the Scene Tab, you’ll notice that the Sun Dial itself consists of several child objects. The only one that shows any parameters is the Sun Chain, something that seemingly connects two yellow lines in your scene together. The bottom part can be rotated using the Elevation and Azimuth parameters.

As mysterious as this is, it gets even better! Remember how we can set an accurate time of day in the Render Settings, under Environment – Sun and Sky? All those latitude/longitude and date/time fields (including the SS Time parameter) have been replaced with a single option called SS Sun Node. Incidentally this has been set to the Sun Node that’s visible in our scene tab.

Now we can control the position of the sun in the sky with two parameters, whose values can be animated. This may make it easier to create the sun effect we want, at the expense of realistic calculations.

To bring said calculations back, you can always unlike the Sun Node from the sky by selecting “none” as the SS Node parameter. That way you can switch back and forth between “calculated time” and “manual mode” to track a similar path of the sun in the sky.

Thanks to Josh Darling for bringing the Sun Dial to my attention.

Happy Sun-Dialling!

Creating a Sunset Portrait in DAZ Studio – 3D Shenanigans #17

In this live event I’ll show you how to create a realistic sunset portrait in DAZ Studio. I’ll explain how to use the Sun and Sky option in the render settings to tweak the time of day, how to make the sun visible and how to move it into position.

Finally we’ll add a character who’s looking at the sunset, dressed in one of Biscuit’s hair and dForce outfits. I’ll even discuss some Tonemapping options to get a handsome looking image without postwork.

Because after all, it’s my birthday today 🙂

Atmospheric Fog Planes in DAZ Studio – 3D Shenanigans #16

In this live event I’ll show you how to use Atmospheric Fog Planes in DAZ Studio. They can be used as a subtle effect to make your scenes more realistic. Fog Planes can fill the screen, or they can be used as prop splats to show steam rising in parts of your image. I’ll show your both versions, explain the workflow in setting up your planes, and how to create them yourself with Carrara.

For this demonstration, I’m using Stonemason’s Urban Future 6.

Shattering my Logo in Blender – 3D Shenanigans #15

On this week’s live stream I’ll take my 3D Shenanigans Logo and shatter it into pieces, to build a creepy backwards animation using the Cell Fracture add-on in Blender 2.79.

I’ll start by explaining how the tool works, then we’ll move on to building the logo from scratch, add materials, and then we’ll build something similar to this animation: https://youtu.be/pzi6ghRRfLg

I currently have TWO RTX 2080 cards in my system, which means I’ll do the shattering in Blender 2.79, and will render in Blender 2.80. Sometimes we’ll just have to use different versions to get a job done.

Here’s a video by Richard from CGCookie about this modifier:

The Cell Fracture add-on is scheduled to make it into Blender 2.81 later this year.

Creating Animated Fog with Carrara – 3D Shenanigans #14

In this live event I’ll create animated volumetric fog with the highly underrated Carrara. I’ll show you around the app and explain how the programme works, introduce you to some of its features, and then I’ll animate good looking fog. Once exported as a transparent image sequence, I’ll try to animate it live over my own camera feed. It’ll be a hoot!

This concept was inspired by my Skeleton at the Graveyard animation I made three years ago.

We’ve discovered a similarly simple effect last Saturday in Subnautica (the ceiling effect at around 2:15:00).
