Episode 252: Ranking Paul McCartney's Live Albums
At the suggestion of a listener, we rank Paul McCartney’s officially released live albums—that is, no video-only releases, bootlegs, or unofficial recordings. We explore the pros and cons of live albums in general, how Paul assembles them, the bands he’s played with, and the song choices for each release. We also share some ideas for future re-releases we’d love to see. Episode 250: Review of Wings, "Back to the Egg"
Thank you for helping us reach 250 episodes! To celebrate, we're finally diving into one of our most requested albums: Back to the Egg by Paul McCartney and Wings, released in 1979. Long overlooked and still awaiting a super deluxe reissue—alongside London Town—this record has become a fan favorite in recent years. But is it a hidden gem or rightfully criticized? Does it deserve a reappraisal, and why hasn't it been re-released since its 1993 "remaster?" We explore all this and more, including a full track-by-track breakdown. As always, we wrap up with the latest Beatles news. Here is Chris's "Scrambled Egg" song reordering of the album. Check out Chris's recent interview appearance with Thomas Gouker and Brooke Halpin!  And Thomas speaking with Dave from a while back!  Feel free to email or record a message about this episode to ivegotabeatlespodcast@outlook.com and we'll include you in our "Please Mr. Postman" segment. Episode 248: Beatles "Friends" -- Allen Klein
Apart from Yoko Ono, probably no other figure in the Beatles story is as divisive and hated as much as Allen Klein. Klein was brought into clean up the business disaster that was Apple, and to get a better contract and more money for the Beatles. After his work with Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, and others, the Beatles gave Klein a chance to improve their finances in 1969-70, with agreements that lasted for the next several years. In this episode, we dig into the background of Allen Klein, his rise to prominence, his work with The Rolling Stones, and of course shine an extensive light on his rise and fall with the Beatles as a group and as solo artists. Is he really the villain we've been led to believe he was? Or did he do some good things for the group? Listen and find out! Episode 247: Classic Beatles Gigs: "Drop In" TV Show, Sweden, October 1963
In this episode, we explore an early European gig the Beatles played in Stockholm, Sweden, on October 30, 1963. Their appearance on the TV show Drop In marked the final stop of their first Scandinavian tour. Unlike the frenzied crowds they would soon face, the audience was remarkably well-behaved, allowing the band’s performance to shine. The Beatles themselves seemed to be having a great time, and thanks to George’s faintly mic’d guitar, John’s rhythm playing comes through more clearly than ever. These performances highlight intricate musical details across the four songs they played. Watching the footage (link here) makes you wish there were more performances without screaming! We finish with some of the latest Beatles news. Thanks for listening! Jump into this episode where we do a fully-detailed analysis and deep dive of the 1978 movie Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band starring Peter Frampton and The Bee Gees, among *numerous* other guest stars of the day like George Burns and Steve Martin. Often deemed one of the worst films of all time, we talk about the absolutely idiotic plot, the terrible acting, some of the awful covers, a few of the good ones, what the movie did to the careers of the stars, and so much more. Episode 245: Songs Under the Microscope, Vol. 33: "Pipes of Peace" by Paul McCartney
In this episode, we talk about the title song of Paul McCartney's 1983 album Pipes of Peace. In addition to our usual discussion of lyrics and music, we talk about the powerful video that accompanied the song starring two "Pauls" (a German and English one!). This was Paul's last #1 in Britain -- does it live up to that reputation all these years later? And as always, we get into the myriad cover versions as well. Here's a list: Sergio Denis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmNyiIKIB6s  Gerry Marsden https://youtu.be/tG99N_2PjtU?si=u1O-hs58zf9YD4mM  Chill Out Sex Band https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wDIepvuSMw  Samantha Landrum https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1U6LyUiOTs  The Poppy Girls  https://youtu.be/CbTsb9lf-Xk?si=Q1vU-SlwihPaq4Mz  Naturally 7 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i26mqL8jDgQ   Muna  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfaXiJ_DTlU  And a rare interview with Paul about this song, looking quite preppy!
