This is an old episode that's dear to my heart that has meaning, compassion, and thoughtfulness. Indeed, somewhat uniting and certainly not divisive. Considering everything, I thought it was a good idea to release it again. I hope you also find meaning in the words MLK spoke.
Every now and then, we need to remind ourselves of our humanity and needed humility. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King was a philosopher, minister, husband, parent, and activist for social justice. His focus on racial equality for African Americans is known the world over. But there's even more to Dr. King than social activism, many of his messages and speeches also focused on various aspects of interpersonal and international relations, the destructive nature of egos gone awry, and the importance of taming our worst interpersonal emotions and desires. This episode isn't about race or ethnic turmoil. It's about human nature and his thoughts on how to avoid the trap of some who believe everyone else is worthy of respect except themselves. I've also included audio excerpts from some of his speeches and sermons. I hope you find it interesting, and if you do, please consider sharing this episode with family, friends, acquaintances, and colleagues. The goal of my podcast is to have interesting guests share their thoughts on different issues, have guest co-hosts to discuss various topics (especially those that offer humor), and even share short episodes in which I discuss thoughtful and even heartwarming issues. **Comments and/or opinions expressed by the host and guests are their own** You can listen to and subscribe to, "It's Not All Bad," that's available from the following platforms: *Google Podcasts - https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy82MDYwNGQ2MC9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw== *Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/its-not-all-bad/id1574392751?uo=4 *Breaker - https://www.breaker.audio/its-not-all-bad *Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/0X6Gn9zC85iEyfKbNmpINM *Pocket Casts - https://pca.st/beu5r0lv *RadioPublic - https://radiopublic.com/its-not-all-bad-WDjRy7
I realize I frequently discuss liberal democracy, voting, encouraging voters to research the issues, and decide on which candidate and political party supports the ideal our democracy is important and actually is quite fragile in today's hyper polarized political environment. I discuss some various aspects that you may consider important for people of the United States as we consider who we are as a country during this critical point in time. Thanks for listening.
The goal of my podcast is to discuss interesting topics either in solo episodes or with guests and guest-hosts. Sharing thoughts on different issues, especially those that are humorous, thoughtful, and thought-provoking, meaningful, insightful, and even heartwarming at times.

Being aware of what we say and do are important. Of course, this word "aware" is now often associated with the new word, "Woke," and it's thoroughly weaponized to the point many people are offended at others who are "aware" or "woke" to slights and even injustices. This is especially true concerning racial and ethnicities, gender issues, religion, and even against people who have physical and emotional challenges. This short episode is about this topic. I find peace in being aware or woke to the plight of others. I hope this is the same with many of my listeners.
In theory and often in practice, liberal democracy principles exist in various Republics, not just in the United States. The right to vote is what citizens expect and deserve as part of a kind of citizens' contract with the government in those countries. In fact, the right to vote is codified in many constitutions as a matter of law.
However, liberal democratic principals have always been under fire and pressure from would be autocrats, authoritarians, war lords, strong men, and those who would enrich themselves and their families. One element in pressuring the downfall of liberal democracies is a charismatic leader gaining followers and convincing them that their interest lies best in a single individual who will fix everything, including bringing back some unrealistic resemblance of the past. You know. Thinking that all was so wonderful a decade, two decades, or even centuries past.
As we all know, we humans have a great capacity for good and an equal (and sometimes greater) capacity for the opposite. Suspicion of the other, racial and ethnic animus, distrust of immigrants, fear, and all manner of grievances are ingredients of a perfect toxic stew to turn citizens against each other. Indeed, some of these would be leaders foment division of a country's electorate to perpetuate their thirst for power.
Often these leaders will lie, target low information voters, weaponize programs of social equity or justice, and even attempt to dilute the voting franchise as a means to divide the country. And guess what; it's worked in the past, it's working now, and will continue to do so if people remain complacent.
A call to action is for citizens to exercise their right to vote in local and national elections, learn about government, review various issues and proposals on the ballot, become a high information voter, and avoid going in the direction of negativism that would-be autocrats seek and foment.
On today's solo episode, I discuss these topics and more. I also play a short audio clip from an episode of a well known television series that first aired on January 24, 1963. I've viewed this entire episode (season 4, episode 24) at least 5 times over the past 20 years. Indeed, it's quite haunting in its relevancy to today's political environment in many countries who exercise liberal democratic principles.
As always, The goal of my podcast is to have interesting guests at time to share their thoughts on different issues, have guest co-hosts to discuss various topics (especially those that offer humor), and even share short episodes in which I discuss thoughtful and even heartwarming issues.

Even with all of the chaos and destructive human behavior in our world, there's still beauty when we stop, reflect, observe, and look for it. This isn't pie in the sky nonsense. Just as humans need ambition or at least are ambitious, we need goodness, kindness, and compassion to sustain the essence of who we should be. It's still around us in so many extremely and almost imperceptible ways, but also in obvious large measure as well. Join me in this short episode to do a reality check on human foibles of human destructiveness and human kindness. Maybe it's not possible to have one without the other, but compassion for others is still at play when we look for and accept it, and contribute to it.

It's always a challenge to remain positive because of the constant drumbeat of hatred, world domination, disease, and mistrust of others. But it's important for all of us to avoid the trap of thinking that only someone else - not you - can make a positive difference. When you truly self-reflect and search your heart, you know YOU can bring a smile to someone's face, you can - and probably - have helped others without expecting or even wanting praise in return, and you may have even accepted the truism that you are important, even if only in a small way, in being here on this earth for a reason and it's not just to get a college education, to work at a job, or to make money. There's so much more and starting with compassion and thoughtfulness is the beginning, middle, and there is no end.

A nation's flag is often a symbol of pride and can signify that it's citizens are one people under that flag and constitution. Indeed, the US flag is also such an important symbol of unity. Yes, there must be acknowledgment that some people will use the flag as a rallying point of supremacy over others, exclusion of others, and even a longing for the "good old days" during which exclusion of whole swaths of Americans were demonized and relegated to almost a perpetual state of impoverishment as a demographic. Fortunately, the American flag and the US Constitution actual stand for progression as a nation and oneness as a people. Not always easy to get past the harmful rhetoric in today's political discourse, but our liberal democracy remains and still endures.
In this short episode, we'll visit the US Pledge of Allegiance and the American flag beyond just symbolism.

It's always saddening to hear or read the news of another mass shooting in America or any country for that matter. Unfortunately, gun related deaths and mass shootings are normal in America. No one can rightly proclaim that gun related deaths and mass shootings are shockingly infrequent or seldom occurances in this country. Just as American football and baseball is as normal as apple pie, shooting deaths are daily events here and mass shootings are not too far behind on the frequency scale. Can something be done for bend the curve of these violent events? Absolutely, yes! As with anything in our society it requires voting citizens to demand our politicians at the local, state, and national level take action.
Unfortunately, there is a heavy gun fetish in American society and strongly financed and managed efforts to thwart any effective gun safety and ownership measures in our society. But that's where you, others, and I come into play. Actions require our involvement, activism, and making it a point to exercise our right to vote at the ballot box for individuals and proposed legislation to bend this curve of carnage. It took decades to end slavery, decades to recognize same sex marriage, decades to end government sanctioned segregation, and decades to finally guarantee the right to vote for all American citizens. To say that it's impossible to deal with the horrors of gun-related deaths and mass shootings in America would admit that Americans have accepted these events as a norm before, a norm now, and a norm forever. May it never be so.
Have you noticed there always seems to be a label for whatever condition we have, emotions we feel, kinds of thoughts we have, and even why some people laugh a lot while others are mostly sullen. But this two-word description called "Imposter Syndrome" caught my attention this week. This feeling that people have, and apparently many definitions specifically specifies this affliction to successful and accomplished individuals. I suspect, it affects many average common folks as well. During this short episode, I discuss the "Imposter Syndrome" concept not in the way of trying to explain whether this is just a phrase that will come and go within a few decades. I just wanted to help open our minds to discussing this topic. Indeed, maybe you or someone you know may have an attack of "Imposter Syndrome." Sometimes it's good to chat about it.

Emotional intelligence or EI has been around for quite some time, since 1990. Often people in leadership positions equate EI to "soft" skills, as if quality and thoughtfully positive emotions are something insignificant and shouldn't be equal to productivity. Fortunately, the are others who believe EI is a must in terms of understanding one's own and the emotions of others. Why would a supervisor, leader, subordinate, or colleague wish to work in a caustic work atmosphere where misunderstandings, mood swings, backbiting, and abusive emotionally behavior is the norm rather than the exception. There are some leaders who appear to have an intuitive high EI, while others struggle with understanding leadership traits, intelligence, and their emotions. Fortunately, EI can be learned.
Hopefully, you're a leader or supervisor, or a person who aspires to gain those positions who values understanding who you are, your aspirations, your positive and negative emotional thresholds, and how you can contribute to building a positive work environment. I discuss this in this episode.

There's nothing inherently wrong with being a political liberal or political conservative. In liberal democracies, this is normal and expected. Indeed, these two deltas and the various points on this spectrum is what keeps society progressing although it does appear to regress at time which is unfortunate. Still, society perseveres and does not give up on democratic ideals and support for all its people. Thank you for listening to this short episode as I discuss misunderstandings and commonalities among this political spectrum. Yes. Huge differences remain and certainly have diminished meaningful political discourse, this can be salvaged. Our political discourse is still somewhat messy, frustrating, and needs repair, for sure. Part of the repair process includes you - the voter - not just politicians. It requires individual voter self-reflection on what's important for our country. Indeed, I do hope it remains the aspirational nature of our liberal democracy and the aspirational and living nature of our constitution. If you must bet, always bet on the big "D." Democracy.

There's absolutely nothing good about COVID-19. It's killed so many people and robbed millions of others of good health. In the wake of this health menace, commercial companies and governments developed and even embraced ways for certain employee positions to be productive even when away from the normal place of work. This is called telework and remote work. What was once almost considered a taboo topic in many circles is now embraced by many as a commonplace practice. I discuss this worker paradigm shift in this episode.

What does heat have to do with democracy? Maybe a lot and maybe nothing. No. This isn't a play on words in any way. Just as atmospheric temperatures are rising across the globe, some would say the potentially dangerous implications of heated political rhetoric is reaching the boiling point in some liberal democracies in the world. Well, I hope to introduce you to the Chef who's named democracy. I prefer to keep to the person's title, Chef. The Chef has some interesting thoughts and maybe you do too. Give a listen.

In today's short episode, I thought it would be good to chat about going on a trip. The kind of travel when you hop in your vehicle with bags and all, for a multi-day trip. Travel that may bring you a sense of renewal, wonder, appreciation, and time for self-reflection. If you think it's time for you to take that leap of faith that a road trip will be meaningful for you, then maybe you should consider doing so.
Nothing too deep or controversial in this episode. Still, as always, I do hope you find it somewhat meaningful, and even consider sharing it with friends, coworkers, or significant others.

Immigrants to America, especially in the earlier centuries is interesting. Not just from the perspective of the thousands of success stories and events, but also from the perspective that's less than stellar and positive. During this episode, I talk about Irish, Japanese, and Chinese immigrants; but also discuss briefly the situation concerning our Native American brothers and sisters.
It's absolutely fine, expected, and encouraged to celebrate the progress of the United States and its people. Still, we should never downplay or overlook the past negatives that happened to various groups of people. In many ways, creating the next success while understanding/acknowledging past wrongs is what truly makes a nation great. This is especially true when nations actively seek to correct past wrongs with the objective of lifting up all people. To do otherwise goes against the ideal of one nation of many people who are worthy and deserving of respect, the pursuit of happiness, and justice for all.
