S11 E9 - Concetta Antico on gifts of Tetrachromacy, a genetic mutation every artist can dream of.

About Concetta Antico

Concetta Antico is an Australian born critically acclaimed artist best known for her signature use of vibrant color and impressionist scenes. Renowned worldwide as The Color Queen, Concetta paints original works that unite nature and science through a style of kaleidoscopic color and brushwork.

Her work has been chronicled extensively and has attracted a large audience worldwide. Her paintings have appeared in many publications and broadcast media including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, VOGUE, BBC, Nine Network Australia and The Guardian. Her paintings are held by hundreds of collectors across the US, Australia, Europe and Asia and have been exhibited in galleries across the US and Australia.

About Tetrachromacy

Tetrachromacy is a condition that allows some people to see colors that are not visible to most of the population. It is a condition that results when an additional type of color receptor cell is present in the eye. With normal color vision, humans can see approximately one million different colors. Tetrachromats can perceive an estimated 100 million color variations

Tetrachromacy amplifies the eye’s ability to distinguish between shades of colors. This creates a visual result that some might call ‘super vision’. Tetrachromacy is a rare genetic phenomenon that is believed to only affect females, with an estimated 12% of women worldwide who may be Tetrachromatic.

S11 E7 - Melissa Grove of GXRLS ROCK! on empowering girls and nonbinary youth through music.

About Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls San Diego:

Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls San Diego is a nonprofit organization that empowers girls and non-binary youth through music in a supportive, community-driven environment. The weeklong summer camp experience fosters a lasting sense of self-esteem, creativity, and personal empowerment for all participants.  By offering a safe and creative space, the camp enables participants to express their thoughts, share ideas, and pursue their dreams.

GXRLS ROCK! provides a supportive, inclusive space for girls and non-binary youth to discover their voices, make friends, and gain life-changing confidence. Throughout the week, campers learn an instrument, form a band, attend workshops, and write and perform an original song – often having never picked up an instrument before. All gear is provided, and students are guided by enthusiastic staff, many of them local San Diego artists, who make learning songwriting and music theory fun and accessible.

This summer, GXRLS ROCK! hopes to make camp an unforgettable experience for all who participate. To help ensure access for all, a limited number of full and partial scholarships are available. Applications are also open for volunteer and paid staff roles, offering adults a chance to support this dynamic program.

This year’s 10th Anniversary Camper Showcase will be an unforgettable celebration of creativity, confidence, and community. “The Camper Showcase is such a special part of camp,” says Grove. “It’s incredible to see what these young musicians create in just five days. We hope the community will join us on June 14 at Music Box to celebrate their hard work and hear some amazing original songs. It’s a fun, inspiring show—and it’s open to everyone.” With extra flair planned in honor of this milestone year, it’s the perfect event for families, music lovers, and supporters of youth empowerment.

I was introduced to Ksenia Luki by a mutual artist friend when I was looking for a Russian-speaking musician and singer to collaborate on a song adaptation for the October Project who you might remember from previous episodes. Not only did I enjoy collaborating with Ksenia, but I also discovered an absolutely unique approach to exploring, creating, and performing music. We talk about the challenges of being a bilingual artist, creating most work not in your native language. We also talk about the healing power of music and Ksenia’s sound healing practice.

S11 E1 - San Diego Artists Donate Their Work To Support LA Artists Affected By Fires, with Heidi Farkash

San Diego’s arts community is coming together to support their Los Angeles counterparts who tragically lost their studios, homes, and livelihoods in the recent Pacific Palisades and Altadena wildfires. This spring, Union Hall Gallery will host a two-weekend Fine Art and Craft Sale from April 4-6 and April 11-13, showcasing over 250 donated works of art—ranging from paintings and sculpture to ceramics, textiles, and more—all aimed at raising funds for the LA art community.

One hundred percent of the proceeds will go directly to the Grief and Hope: LA Art World Fire Relief Fund. Featured in the sale are renowned artists like Italo Scanga, Paula Wittner, James Hubbell, Larry Groff, Margaret Larlham, Jane Culp, and Joe Garcia, alongside emerging voices, university students, tattoo artists, and fiber artists. With prices ranging from $10 to $5,000, the sale is designed to make art accessible for everyone—whether you’re a seasoned collector or someone simply looking to support a worthy cause. Come explore a diverse range of artwork and help support those in need.

Would you be interested in highlighting this major fine art and craft sale benefiting LA artists impacted by wildfires? I’d be more than happy to set up an interview with Heidi, owner of Union Hall Gallery and Santa Ysabel Art Gallery, or any of the artists donating their work. Please find hi-res images here.

In this episode, I talk to two wonderful women artists and dear friends of mine whom you might remember from the previous episodes on the Podcast: Michelle Lubin (aka MD Ferrera) and Galina Semenova. The reason we got together is to talk about the collaborative exhibition we are having in March 2025 to showcase our womanly experiences from three different perspectives. Our mediums and styles are vastly different, but they complement each other on the visceral, emotional level of expressing and processing emotions we are dealing with. The show will run through the month of March in person at the Artist & Craftsman Supply in San Diego, CA, and the virtual reality gallery space. Most work has never been shown before, and we have a couple of interactive surprises for our visitors.
