S2Ep3 From Pilates to Feldenkrais | Trainee Talk with Kris Desjardins

Hey Listeners! I’m Zhiwei, currently in my third year of Feldenkrais teacher training and I aim to become a fully certified Feldenkrais practitioner next year. In this episode I invited my classmate, Kris. Krist started as a physio with her bachelor's degree of physiotherapy from University of Toronto in 1992. In the early 2000, she became a Nationally Certified Pilates Teacher (NCPT). In this episode, we will dive into a lot of this kind of fine differences in how we conceptualize exercise, movement, functional movement, power, muscle mass versus muscle metabolism, and overall, elegance and vitality despite your age.

If you want to know more about Kris or work with her, check out adaramovement.com.

Highlights:

  • no more pilates, I’m teaching Feldenkrais
  • what is the difference from bio-mechanical thinking of movements v.s. the Feldenkrais way?
  • how relaxing the tension makes you actually stronger
  • What keeps a person’s body functional even with aging?
  • Even with all kinds of neurological damage people can still improve their function in life?
  • The challenge about transitioning into Feldenkrais from the Pilates world.
  • Instead of worrying too much about muscle mass, what about muscle metabolism?
  • Gym exercise is not the only way to test your functionality.
  • Teacher’s doubt: how to help a student effectively? A combination of group and private class
  • Teacher’s fear: what if nobody comes to my Feldenkrais class?
  • Feldenkrais as a form of meditation
  • Future goals for Zhiwei and Kris as Feldenkrais teachers
