#23 - To be embodied is to be curious about ourselves (2/2)

We wrap up our conversation with Elia (wildwonderwellness.com) by digging a little deeper into embodiment - how she views and practices embodiment, and ways she guides her clients, who are helping professionals themselves, into embodied presence. A core part of social work is advocacy, and we listened in awe as Elia shared her journey towards embodying advocacy with compassionate lens.

#22 - Pause — it's the key to connection (1/2)

We are thrilled to invite a fellow social worker/body-based coach Elia (www.wildwonderwellness.com) onto the show! In this 2 part series, we did what we do naturally as social workers: reflect on everything in life :D

We chat with Elia on the expectation of being a fixer/problem solver that comes with the profession and the challenges that social workers face in drawing boundaries at work. When we bring this conversation back to our body, we realise that many social workers / helping professionals may be stuck living in our heads. We envisioned what social work and helping professions could look like if we choose to take intentional pauses to shift our attention into our bodies, bringing first and foremost, ourselves back into wholeness.

Other highlights in this episode include:

- The deep use of self in this profession

- The strength we carry that empowers our clients can come from our own history of pain

#21 - A movement practice to come out of fight or flight

This episode is different from the rest. We thought it would be nice to disengage from the act of thinking, discussing and reflecting that is usually offered in previous episodes. De-attaching ourselves from activities that involves our minds can possibly be useful in times when we may find ourselves overwhelmed with what is going on in it. We offer a short embodiment practice to support you in times when you may find yourself in a fight or flight state. Feel free to take this practice in ways that would support you.

May your mind be tamed, your body be free. May you arrive and feel alive.

#20 - "Nobody knows what brings ease, stability, and care for my body, better than I do." (2/2)

We enter into a flurry of thoughts and opinions in this 2nd part of our conversation with Leigh Khoo! Taking a stab at trauma informed yoga, we chat about how trauma shows up in yoga classes and how we can all be more aware and informed about trauma when we share our yoga practices together.

Much of trauma live as imprints in our body — our muscle tone, breath patterns, our emotional reactions to certain body postures, and capacities to arrive in the present moment, just to name a few. With that context, there is no doubt that trauma will show up in yoga classes. Some of the highlights in this episode include:

  • The need for control is the only way to feel safe when we are carrying trauma, and why that makes surrendering so hard
  • Offer invitations for inquiry instead of giving hard instructions and demands
  • Hold spaces for people to feel, and let them know that if they do not feel, that's okay too. Our practice does not determine our worth.
  • Breath attuned practice vs. breath embodied practice
  • Taking full ownership and responsibility over my Yoga practice, and the importance of a self practice

#19 - a daily remembering of our inner goodness (1/2)

"I believe not only that trauma is curable, but that the healing process can be a catalyst for profound awakening — a portal opening to emotional and genuine spiritual transformation." - Peter Levine

We enter into our most spiritual episode yet with our new guest, Leigh Khoo (www.living-yoga.co). In this 2-part intimate sharing of her lifelong relationship with Yoga that began at the age of 16, Leigh weaves in stories of curiosity, pain, love, and anger that led her onto a path home to herself and her inner divinity. As we listen to tales of her meeting yoga, falling out of the practice, then returning to, and deepening of the practice, the stories seem to mirror her relationship with her own pain and healing — non linear with twists and turns.

Yoga holds up a mirror to our relationship with ourselves, our bodies, and ultimately, our divinity, our inner goodness. Our hearts nourished, as we listened to Leigh's journey into her inner divinity, from a constant grasping at control to a yielding surrender to life and its grander mysteries.

May your heart be nourished by her sharing too. 💕

#18 - Loving yourself is...(3/3)

We wind down our conversation with Shihui chatting about ways she has learned to create a loving relationship with herself. We particularly love these two nuggets of wisdom from her: "cooking is love made tangible"and "therapy is dedicating time for yourself to explore wisdom and healing that exists in yourself". We will leave you to discover the rest of the gems - enjoy!

#17 - the little ts - t for trauma, in our lives (2/3)

We continue the conversation with our guest, Shihui. In episode #16, Shihui shared how a health crisis turned her life around when she realised that there is no shame in prioritising her health (over her work). She brought us along the different ways she's since found to gather the different parts of herself, that were once fragmented, back together in support of each other.

In this episode, she reflects on her experiences in pilates and yoga and the invitation from her yoga teacher that changed the way she relates to her body: "do what your body feels is useful."

Our conversation took a meandering turn that landed on our childhood experiences when we discussed the question "what does coming home to yourself look like?" Here we did a little unpacking on the unhelpful messages from the adults around us which, accumulated over time, may have turned into the little t traumas that we continue to carry in us as we grow up.

#16 - Holding multiple parts of ourselves with loving kindness (1/3)

Our next guest, Shihui, shares with her own journey of healing. Many parts of her sharing are deeply relatable for many of us who place our work identities above everything else. Shihui shares how a health crisis turned her life around when she realised that there is no shame in prioritising her health (over her work). She brings us along the different ways she's since found to gather the different parts of herself, that were once fragmented, back together in support of each other.

Healing is a lifelong journey. Join us as we discover with Shihui, over the next 3 episodes, how different ways of healing have supported her at different points of her journey.

#15 - Coming into relationship with yourself (3/3)

In this last part of a 3 part series with Daphne Chua (yogawithdaphne.com), we continue the conversation with Daphne on complex trauma in the body and the paths she explore with folks she journey with towards healing. Her sharing in this episode reminds us of a line from Thich Nhat Hanh - "There is no way to peace, peace is the way. The process that gives rise to peace has to also be peace. Every step on the path to peace must be peace."

We may often look at what's at the end of the tunnel: to be healed, our pain and suffering be done and dusted. Many of us forget that the path we take towards healing, is already the healing that we are looking for. Our healing is in the process.

Yet, healing can be a lonely place to dwell in, as Daphne reminds us. Sometimes we get stuck inside with our pain and our ego, and feeling becomes too scary when judgement hovers above us. Daphne shares ways we can come into relationship with ourselves, learning to feel — without judgement. Learning to feel, while reminding ourselves that we are not alone.

#14 - The art of trust, the instinct to protect, and the return to safety in our body (2/3)

Wow this episode is brimming! Brimming with insights from Daphne Chua — somatic explorer, teacher and therapist (yogawithdaphne.com). Savour and digest this episode as a mini masterclass (no kidding!) on our nervous system in supporting us to navigate our daily lives AND in protecting us through traumatic events as well as complex trauma in relationships or circumstances that some of us may have lived / are living with. Daphne integrates her wealth of knowledge and experiences across the study of somatics, the Polyvagal theory (Stephen Porges) as well as Body-mind centering (Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen).

One of the anchors in our return to a felt sense of safety is the ability to return to balance — a balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic energies held together by trust. Trusting ourselves, trusting our bodies, and trusting our world.

What helps you feel balance? What brings you back to balance? What does it take for you to trust? Join us in this conversation, one unravel at a time.

#13 - Our sixth sense: interoception (1/3)

Over the next three episodes we have Daphne Chua (yogawithdaphne.com) join us in conversation. Rich is the word when we recall this recording session with Daphne. Daphne shares with us her journey with somatic exploration that interweaves with rich life experiences travelling and living in different Southeast Asian countries. We also touch on our senses, our sixth sense, sensory language, and sensory mapping. Through her sharing, we learn to appreciate the colours, the hues, the vitality and the magnificence that is... our body. Enjoy!

We took some time to reflect on 2022 in this first episode in 2022...and it got us unpacking the 'freeze' state in our stress and trauma responses. We share what the 'freeze' in 'fight, flight, and freeze' looks and feels like in our nervous system, and reflected on ways to help us move through this state with the nuggets of wisdom from our guest speakers in past episodes.

#10 - Intentions, routines, rituals (part 2/2)

Candice (solhouse.co) shares with us Ayurvedic practices that we can infuse into our daily routines. Much of Ayurvedic wisdom stem from recognising the connection between the macrocosm and the microcosm: what exists outside in our environment also exists within us.

While trauma creates and causes chaos and "stuck-ness" in our environment, mind and body, synchronising with the movement and rhythms of the natural world can nurse our health back to balance. The setting of clear intentions that is nourished by regular routines/rituals is one way that can bring us back to a state of inner harmony and balance.

From our conversation you'd know that changing our modern lives to move with the rhythms of Nature can be very challenging! We talk about the powerful shifts that setting intentions can bring to help us embed these practices into our city-dwelling lives, and baby steps that you can take to begin.

PS: look out for the self massage practice that Candice has generously offered to all of us, on our Instagram page!

#9 - Harmonise our body with the wisdom of Ayurveda (Part 1/2)

Do you enjoy massages? There is no lack of options when it comes to massages, an activity that's become quite a staple here in Singapore. Are the benefits simply tension soothing and relaxation, or does healing happen at a deeper layer? We chat with Candice from Sol House (solhouse.co) about Ayurveda and Ayurvedic massages, and we learn about the harmonising that Ayurveda invites back into the body. Massages can also help us regulate through co-regulation, an offer that Candice brings into her bodywork sessions with her clients. This, and more on our reflections on western and eastern approaches towards ailments and healing.

Episode 5 is the main course to the appetiser that episode 4 brings. It invites us to contemplate on the multiple realities we hold in our bodies as we explore intergenerational trauma. It suggests that healing perhaps, begins with acknowledging all of these realities with a "yes, and..."
