Step aboard as the ferry glides south across Lago Maggiore, where the snowy peaks of Switzerland fade into the distance and Italy’s warmth returns in full bloom. In this third episode of our five-part Lago Maggiore Series, travel author and host Katerina Ferrara takes you through the central shores of Verbania, exploring the poetic towns of Pallanza, Intra, and the legendary Villa Taranto Gardens, where nature and art meet in perfect harmony.
Feel the gentle rhythm of the lake as voices shift from Swiss to Italian, church bells echo across the water, and colorful facades shimmer beneath the morning sun. Katerina’s narration captures the elegance and authenticity that define this region, the heart of Lago Maggiore’s soul.
In Pallanza, discover timeless grace: tree-lined promenades, pastel villas, and one of the most extraordinary botanical gardens in Europe. The story of Captain Neil Boyd McEacharn, a Scottish visionary who created Villa Taranto in the 1930s, unfolds like a living fairytale. Hear how he transformed the lakeside into a global masterpiece of 20,000 plant species, from lotus ponds to dahlias, magnolias, wisteria, and camellias. In May, the gardens burst into bloom, perfuming the air with color and serenity.
Continue south to Intra, the working heart of Verbania, where ferries glide, markets fill the piazzas, and life unfolds in the cadence of everyday Italy. Experience the hum of the Saturday market, the aroma of fresh focaccia, and the bell of Basilica di San Vittore, the town’s spiritual anchor. Here, simplicity becomes beauty and travelers discover a slower, more human rhythm that defines immersion travel.
Katerina weaves personal stories and practical insights with cultural history, offering listeners a rich sense of place from the Passeggiata della Beata Giovannina, a lakeside walk named after a local saint, to café terraces where locals linger for hours over espresso and conversation. Learn where to stay, what to eat, and how to navigate the lake’s ferry routes with ease as she reveals her favorite hotels, osterie, and hidden corners around Verbania.
This episode is both a journey and a meditation, a reflection on the artistry of gardens, the pulse of community, and the enduring spirit of northern Italy. Whether you are a garden lover, a cultural explorer, or simply dreaming of Italy’s lakes, Episode 3 invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and let Lago Maggiore’s light and tranquility wash over you.

A five-part journey across Lago Maggiore, one of Italy’s most enchanting lakes. In this first episode, travel author Katerina Ferrara takes you beyond the guidebook and into the soul of northern Italy, exploring Stresa, Baveno, and the legendary Borromean Islands through history, beauty, and personal storytelling.
From the first glimpse of Stresa’s Belle Époque promenade to quiet mornings in Baveno, this episode captures the lake’s timeless charm. Travel by ferry to the Borromean Islands, three jewels of Lago Maggiore, each with its own soul:
🏛️ Isola Bella, a baroque masterpiece of art and gardens rising from the lake.
🐟 Isola dei Pescatori, a humble fishing village alive with tradition, where you can taste risotto al pesce persico and join the August Ferragosto festival.

Raise a glass and join me, Katerina Ferrara, for this special episode of the Immersion Travel Italy Podcast, where we dive into one of Italy’s most magical seasons: autumn wine festival season. Whether you dream of sipping sparkling Franciacorta in Lombardy, strolling the lakeside promenade in Bardolino during the Festa dell’Uva e del Vino, or tasting the very first pour of vino novello on San Martino, this episode is your passport to experiencing Italy at its most authentic.
Italy has been called the land of wine for over 4,000 years, and in this episode, I take you on a journey that blends history, tradition, and travel tips for wine lovers.
We’ll start in northern Italy, in the rolling foothills of Lombardy where Franciacorta is made using the classic champagne method. Discover what makes Franciacorta special, from underground cellars to guided vineyard walks, and why Franciacorta in Cantina is a bucket-list festival for sparkling wine fans.
From there, we head east to Lake Garda for Bardolino’s famous wine celebration. Picture dozens of tasting booths along the lakefront, local food pairings like bigoli pasta, music filling the air, and fireworks over the water. This is Veneto at its most picturesque, a place where wine and celebration meet la dolce vita.
Then, we climb into the Dolomites to Belluno for Fiera di San Martino, celebrated every November 11. Learn why San Martino is more than a saint’s feast day, it’s a turning point in the agricultural year, when Italians traditionally taste the new vintage for the first time. Across Italy, Cantine Aperte a San Martino open their cellars so you can taste young wines with roasted chestnuts and seasonal dishes.
Next, we travel south to Lazio, home of the Sagra dell’Uva di Marino in the Castelli Romani near Rome, where fountains actually flow with wine! I’ll share the history of this incredible event, its ties to the Battle of Lepanto, and why Marino is one of the most charming wine towns near Rome.
Our journey continues to Puglia, where the flat plains produce powerful reds like Primitivo and Negroamaro. We stop in Martina Franca for a cozy San Martino celebration, tasting wine alongside focaccia and caciocavallo cheese. Finally, we end in Sicily, on the slopes of Mount Etna at Vini Milo, a festival dedicated to the island’s volcanic wines. Discover why Etna Rosso is one of Italy’s most exciting wines right now, and why September and October are the perfect months to visit.
This episode is more than a tasting guide, it’s a call to slow down, travel with purpose, and immerse yourself in Italy’s wine culture. You’ll learn about Italy’s DOC and DOCG classifications, how to plan your trip around open cellar weekends (Cantine Aperte), and why autumn may be the best time to visit Italy (cooler weather, fewer crowds, and festivals everywhere!).
If you love Italian wine, slow travel, harvest festivals, and authentic local experiences, this episode is for you. Grab a glass of Chianti, Primitivo, or Etna Rosso, press play, and plan your perfect fall escape.

Welcome to another episode of the Immersion Travel Italy Podcast! I’m Katerina Ferrara, travel author and host, and today I’m joined by Kasia Chojecki, creator of the Amongst Romans Podcast. Together we dive into the heart of Campania, one of Italy’s most fascinating regions, home to iconic sites like Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum, the Amalfi Coast, and the Reggia di Caserta, as well as hidden gems that most visitors miss.
Campania is a region of contrasts: dramatic coastlines, ancient ruins, vibrant cities, mountain villages, and unforgettable festivals. In this conversation, Kasia and I explore what makes Campania so unique, drawing on her personal experience of living there for three years.
We begin with Naples (Napoli) a city layered with history from the Greeks, Romans, medieval rulers, Renaissance princes, and Bourbon kings. Kasia shares why Naples is misunderstood, and why its treasures deserve more than just a quick stop. From underground cisterns and the Bourbon tunnels to elegant palaces, world-class museums, and the bustling energy of everyday life, Naples is a destination that rewards curious travelers. We also talk about boat trips from Naples to Ischia, Procida, and Capri, where thermal waters, colorful harbors, and sea grottos make for magical escapes.
Of course, no discussion of Campania is complete without the UNESCO World Heritage Sites that define it. We talk about Pompeii, the Roman city frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, and why its scale can feel overwhelming. Kasia shares why she prefers Herculaneum, a smaller but more immersive site with mosaics, courtyards, and preserved homes that bring ancient life vividly to light. We also touch on Oplontis, Capua, and Paestum, with its magnificent Greek temples and sandy beaches.
Another highlight is the Reggia di Caserta, often called the “Versailles of Italy.” This royal palace with sprawling gardens, fountains, and Baroque architecture is a must for anyone interested in Italy’s aristocratic past. Nearby Caserta town and aqueducts also reveal layers of Bourbon history.
Then, of course, there’s the legendary Amalfi Coast. While most tourists rush to Positano and Sorrento, Kasia and I discuss why it’s worth venturing to towns like Maiori, Ravello, and Amalfi itself. Ravello, perched high on the cliffs, hosts world-renowned music festivals and offers breathtaking views. Beyond the Amalfi Coast, we spotlight Palinuro, a hidden coastal treasure with sea caves, quiet beaches, and fewer crowds.
But Campania isn’t just about famous landmarks. It’s about living traditions. We dive into the region’s festivals and sagre, from the Ravello Music Festival to chestnut and mushroom festivals in the fall, and the presepi (nativity scenes) in Naples at Christmas. Campania’s festivals bring whole towns together, blending food, music, processions, and history into immersive cultural experiences.
Kasia also shares insights on daily life in Campania, navigating transport in smaller towns, the challenges and joys of learning Italian, and what it feels like to truly settle into local rhythms. We discuss how the mountains of Campania offer just as many breathtaking views as the coastline, with towns like Rocca San Felice and Gesualdo providing perfect sunset spots over rolling hills and medieval castles.

What does it really mean to immerse yourself in a destination and truly experience its culture, even if you are only there for a short vacation? In this episode of the Immersion Travel Podcast, I sit down with travel storyteller and author Wells Jones to explore the meaning of immersion travel and how anyone can practice it.
We talk about the importance of being a gracious tourist and approaching every destination with curiosity, humility, and respect. Wells shares inspiring travel stories, from running with the bulls in Pamplona to hearing the call to prayer in Jerusalem, and explains how thoughtful trip planning helps create opportunities for meaningful cultural encounters.
We also explore how food is one of the most powerful ways to immerse yourself in a place. Whether tasting regional specialties at a village sagra in Italy, enjoying a local market breakfast, or sharing a meal with locals, culinary experiences bring the culture to life and make travel memories unforgettable.

Step into the real Corleone in Sicily with guest Giuseppe Provenzano, the 27 year old founder of Discover Corleone. After studying and working abroad, Giuseppe returned home with a mission to share the town’s true identity and living culture, far beyond the headlines.
Corleone is a place of nature, tradition, and complex history. Giuseppe explains why the most authentic experience is not about dark stories, but about knowledge, truth, and the people who keep traditions alive. He avoids macabre tourism and invites travelers to meet the community behind the name.
In this episode we follow Giuseppe’s signature route through the historic center, where streets and churches reveal centuries of change. The walk pairs beautifully with a visit to the International Center for Documentation on Mafia and Anti Mafia, a thoughtful museum that helps visitors understand the forces that shaped Sicily and the courageous response of civil society. Many travelers then continue to Corleone’s waterfalls just outside town for a nature break that shows a greener side of the island.
Giuseppe brings everyday Sicily to life through food and landscape. He shares the ritual of making ricotta and pecorino, why sheep’s milk gives that unmistakable flavor, and how a tasting at a family caseificio connects travelers to the people who still work this land. At roughly six hundred meters above sea level, Corleone often feels fresher than coastal Palermo, with pastures and seasonal herding patterns that have shaped local identity for generations.
We also talk sagre and seasons. From tomatoes grown with almost no irrigation to festivals that honor bread and grain, Corleone’s calendar reflects its agricultural soul. For festival focused travelers, these events are a chance to experience music, processions, bonfires, and the energy of a town that proudly celebrates its patron Saint Leoluca and its farming heritage.
What you will learn in this episode:
• How to experience modern Corleone with a local guide who balances history, anti mafia education, community stories, and nature.
• Why the Anti Mafia documentation center belongs on a responsible traveler’s itinerary.
• How to build a perfect Corleone day: guided town walk, museum visit, waterfalls, and an optional warm ricotta tasting at a family dairy.
• Festival ideas to time your trip for authentic traditions and seasonal flavors.
If you are planning a Sicily trip and want to go beyond the usual stops, this conversation is your starting point for Corleone. It offers practical inspiration and insider context that help you travel deeper, meet locals, and support responsible experiences that honor the town’s past and present.

Welcome to another immersive episode of the Immersion Travel Italy Podcast, where we transport you to the sun-drenched hills of southeastern Sicily to uncover one of Italy’s most vibrant cultural spectacles — The Infiorata di Noto. Held each May, this breathtaking floral festival transforms the city’s historic heart into a cascading carpet of petals, art, faith, and celebration.
✨ In this episode, you’ll step into the UNESCO World Heritage city of Noto, the crown jewel of Sicilian Baroque architecture. As we walk through the honey-colored streets, we’ll share the story of the city's dramatic rebirth after the 1693 earthquake, its masterfully rebuilt churches and palaces, and its transformation each spring into a living canvas of floral magnificence.
🌺 What is the Infiorata?
The Infiorata di Noto is one of the most stunning festivals in all of Italy. Each year, artists meticulously design and create intricate mosaics made entirely of flower petals along Via Nicolaci, right in front of the majestic Palazzo Nicolaci di Villadorata. These ephemeral works of art are inspired by an annual theme—ranging from religious imagery and classical mythology to Sicilian folklore and international friendship. It’s a dazzling display of tradition, creativity, and community spirit.
🕍 Explore Noto’s Top Sites During the Festival:
Cattedrale di San Nicolò – Dominating the skyline with its striking Baroque façade, this cathedral sits atop a grand staircase and provides a stunning backdrop for the festivities.
Palazzo Ducezio – Noto’s elegant city hall with a columned interior and panoramic terrace overlooking the main square.
Via Nicolaci – The centerpiece of the Infiorata, this sloped street becomes a garden of art during the festival and is flanked by baroque balconies often called “the most beautiful in the world.”
Church of Montevergine – A narrow wedge of a church tucked into the historic center, perfect for escaping the crowds and soaking in quiet Baroque beauty.
Porta Reale – The grand gateway into the city, an iconic photo spot for festival-goers and a symbol of Noto’s royal past.
🎭 Festival Highlights Covered in This Episode:
Behind-the-scenes look at how locals prepare for the Infiorata
Interviews with artists and floral designers who create the petal carpets
What to eat during the festival (don’t miss granita, almond pastries, and local wines!)
Tips for visiting: where to stay, how to navigate the crowds, and the best views of the flower carpets
Cultural events tied to the festival, including processions, music, and late-night openings of churches and museums
📅 When to Go
The Infiorata typically takes place the third weekend of May, aligning with ideal weather for exploring Noto and the surrounding Val di Noto region. Pair your visit with nearby gems like Modica, Ragusa, and the stunning beaches of Vendicari Nature Reserve.

Welcome to this moving episode of the Immersion Travel Italy Podcast, where we guide you through the ancient streets of Syracuse (Siracusa), one of Sicily’s most storied cities, and into the heart of one of its most cherished religious festivals, The Festa di Santa Lucia. Walk in the footsteps of saints and philosophers as we explore this coastal jewel of the Mediterranean and experience a celebration of faith, tradition, and Sicilian identity.
✨ In this episode, you’ll discover the incredible history of Santa Lucia, the beloved patron saint of Syracuse and a symbol of light, healing, and hope. We’ll uncover her origins, martyrdom, and enduring legacy, not only in Sicily but around the world. Then, you’ll join thousands of devoted pilgrims and locals as they take part in the powerful processions and rituals that unfold each December in her honor.
🌟 Who Was Santa Lucia?
Born in Syracuse in the late 3rd century AD, Lucia was a Christian martyr who refused to renounce her faith during the brutal Diocletian persecution. Her courage, devotion, and miraculous intercessions made her one of the most revered saints in the Catholic Church. Known as the "Bringer of Light," she is honored across Europe, but nowhere more passionately than in her hometown.
📿 The Festa di Santa Lucia – A Celebration of Faith and Community
Held annually between December 13 and 20, this festival is a stunning example of devotion in motion. It begins with a solemn procession on December 13, when the silver statue of Santa Lucia is carried on the shoulders of devoted bearers from the Cathedral of Syracuse in Piazza Duomo through the streets to the Basilica di Santa Lucia al Sepolcro. Along the route, crowds gather, candles flicker, choirs sing, and prayers rise into the winter air. The return procession takes place on December 20, marking the saint's journey back to the heart of Ortigia.
🕍 Sites to Explore in Syracuse:
Duomo di Siracusa – A unique cathedral built upon a Greek temple, blending ancient Doric columns with Baroque elegance. It houses the silver statue of Santa Lucia.
Piazza Duomo – The heart of Ortigia Island and the main stage for the beginning of the festival.
Basilica di Santa Lucia al Sepolcro – A sacred site on the mainland, believed to be built on the place of her martyrdom.
Teatro Greco – One of the most intact Greek theaters in the world, used for classical plays even today.
Ear of Dionysius – A towering limestone cave in the ancient quarries of the Neapolis Archaeological Park, steeped in legend.
Fountain of Arethusa – A romantic natural spring tied to Greek mythology, right by the sea.
🕯️ Festival Highlights Covered in This Episode:
The history and miracles of Santa Lucia
The emotional impact of the processions and the spiritual atmosphere
Traditional foods and customs associated with the celebration (including cuccìa, a wheat and ricotta dish made only for Santa Lucia’s feast)
Practical tips for attending: what to expect, how to dress, where to stand, and the best vantage points for the procession
How this festival unites generations of Syracusans and visitors in a deeply meaningful experience
📅 When to Go
Plan your visit between December 13–20 to experience the full celebration. Syracuse in winter offers a quieter, more contemplative beauty than the summer crowds — perfect for meaningful travel. Extend your trip with visits to Ortigia Island, the Neapolis ruins, and the nearby towns of Noto and Palazzolo Acreide.

Step into the heart of an Italian summer and experience Ferragosto, Italy’s most anticipated mid-August holiday. Celebrated on August 15, Ferragosto blends ancient Roman rituals, Catholic devotion, and modern Italian lifestyle into one spectacular day. From historic processions and thrilling horse races to fireworks over the Mediterranean, Ferragosto is the moment when Italy comes alive with color, music, and passion. In this episode, we uncover the top 5 Ferragosto celebrations, the traditions behind them, and exactly what Italians do to mark this unforgettable day.
We begin with the origins of Ferragosto—tracing it back to Emperor Augustus in 18 BC, when the Feriae Augusti was a day of rest and celebration after the grueling harvest season. Later, the Catholic Church aligned it with the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, giving Ferragosto its deep spiritual meaning. This layering of ancient and sacred traditions makes it one of Italy’s most unique and enduring holidays.
Next, we travel to Messina in Sicily for one of the most dramatic Ferragosto events—the Vara procession. Imagine a towering, 13-meter-tall float representing the Assumption of Mary, pulled through the city by thousands of barefoot devotees dressed in white and blue. Ropes stretch across the streets as chants and hymns fill the air, the float swaying rhythmically as it makes its way to Piazza Duomo. This centuries-old event is both a breathtaking act of faith and a thrilling communal spectacle.
From Sicily, we head north to Siena, Tuscany, where Ferragosto coincides with the legendary Palio di Siena. On August 16, the medieval city center transforms into a racetrack for bareback riders representing Siena’s contrade (districts). The atmosphere is electric—drums echo, flags snap in the wind, and the crowd roars as horses thunder around the sharp, sandy curves of Piazza del Campo. It’s not just a race—it’s a centuries-old ritual of honor, pride, and fierce rivalry.
Our Ferragosto journey continues to the islands and coasts, where Italians celebrate with all-night beach parties, bonfires, and spectacular fireworks displays. On the Amalfi Coast, Capri, and Sicily’s Aeolian Islands, boats gather in shimmering bays as pyrotechnics light up the night sky. Inland, mountain towns hold sagras—local food festivals—featuring everything from roasted meats to regional wines, all accompanied by folk music and dancing.
We’ll also share how Rome celebrates, with its vibrant street life, concerts, and religious observances, and how coastal resorts like Rimini and Viareggio fill with vacationing families. For Italians, Ferragosto is more than a day off—it’s about reuniting with loved ones, honoring traditions, and savoring the height of summer.
Top 5 Ferragosto Celebrations We Cover:
The Vara in Messina, Sicily – Towering religious float pulled by thousands.
Palio di Siena, Tuscany – World-famous bareback horse race.
By the end of this episode, you’ll know the best places to be on August 15, what to expect, and how to experience Ferragosto like a local—from joining a sunrise procession to ending the day with music under a starlit Italian sky. Whether you’re planning your summer trip or just dreaming of Italy, this is your all-access pass to one of the country’s most beloved traditions.

Today, we take you to Castel Gandolfo, a hilltop gem in the Castelli Romani just 15 miles southeast of Rome, famous for its panoramic views of Lake Albano, its Papal Palace, and the sweet joy of its Sagra delle Pesche—the annual Peach Festival.
🍑 What is the Peach Festival?
Each July, the normally tranquil town bursts to life in celebration of its famous peaches, grown in volcanic soil and ripened in the warm Lazio sun. The Sagra delle Pesche honors both the fruit and the hardworking community that cultivates it, with food stands, peach tastings, parades, historical reenactments, artisan markets, and musical performances filling the cobblestone streets.
At its heart, it’s a celebration of abundance, tradition, and the enduring bond between the town and the land.
🏰 But there’s more than peaches here. Castel Gandolfo is no ordinary Italian village—it’s the summer retreat of Popes past, a place of rest and diplomacy for leaders of the Catholic Church since the 17th century. Overlooking the shimmering Lake Albano, the Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo (Palazzo Apostolico) was built on the ruins of Emperor Domitian’s villa and became a haven for popes including Pius XII, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI.
In this episode, you’ll:
Discover the fascinating history of the Papal Palace, now open to the public and housing priceless papal artifacts and Vatican treasures
Hear about the popes who made Castel Gandolfo their refuge, even during wartime, and how Pope Francis redefined the palace’s role for modern times
Stroll through the Barberini Gardens, a breathtaking blend of Renaissance design and ancient Roman ruins
Dive into the peach-inspired street food, from fresh fruit to peach gelato, pastries, liqueurs, and traditional Lazio fare
Experience the blend of sacred and celebratory—a hallmark of FestaFusion—where popes once walked and now local families parade in peach-themed costumes
💒 From solemn papal blessings on the palace balcony to folk music echoing off Baroque facades, Castel Gandolfo’s Peach Festival captures the spirit of Italian summers—rooted in tradition, rich in history, and always filled with joy.
