How do you stop a pimple from getting worse? Any quick fixes?
Pimples are quite nightmarish for those who suffer from it. Women with adult acne dread the menstrual flare-ups of acne.
Here are a few key pimple remedies to bear in mind- and also some to avoid:
Do: use a non-irritating plant based pimple cream both for treatment and prevention such as the Blemish Spot Cream. If the pimple is draining pus, use a warm compress to gently express the pus without squeezing. The best time is right after a warm shower. If your pimple wont go away after 2 weeks or more, you may have a cyst. Acne cysts are best treated with steroid injections by your dermatologist.
Don’t: use retinoids on active pimples. This is not well known, and many purportedly are told by non-dermatologist doctors ie. beauty doctors, aesthetic doctors and beauticians that they should use retinoids on all acne. Retinoids can cause severe and worsening inflammation on active acne. Generally, dermatologists advise to use retinoids over acne-prone areas, and to avoid directly over inflamed pimples. Rather, if necessary, your dermatologist may prescribe topical steroid lotions to quickly quell inflammation. These are meant only for short term use as they can cause steroid acne.

Sunscreen only helps prevent sunburns. Fact or myth?
Myth. Sunscreen doesn't just prevent sunburns. In fact, many asians belonging to the skin of colour category don't sunburn easily. This is because melanin in the skin can protect from UV radiation. However, this doesn't eliminate the risk of skin cancers so if you are looking at sunburns only to judge your risk of skin cancer, you are only partially correct.
The accumulated UV exposure over your entire lifetime increases the risk of skin immune suppression. This means that your skin cells cannot repair damaged DNA as effectively as you grow older. Eventually besides wrinkles and dark spots, there is also an increase risk of skin cancer.

Retinol face serum is traditionally regarded as the holy grail of OTC cosmeceuticals. As a derivative of vitamin A, retinol works by stimulating collagen production and targeting skin receptors known as nuclei acid receptors. It’s also associated with the coveted retinoid glow which refers to a lifted, plumped and tightened skin appearance. However, one major downside is that certain skin types do not tolerate it well, i.e. sensitive skin, skin of color. Those living in sunny climates also experience much higher rates of photosensitivity.
In this episode, we discuss 7 categories of retinol face serum alternatives that are suited for sensitive skin types.
(0:00) Introduction to Retinol
(01:11) Naturally Occurring Sources of Retinol
(02:31) Retinyl Palmitate as a Retinol Alternative
(04:40) Acetyl Hexapeptide as a Retinol Alternative

The role of moisture in skin aging
A little bit about the role of moisture and the skin barrier in the aging process. Our skin primarily composes of the epidermis. The epidermis hosts the stratum corneum and the second layer of skin, the dermis. These two components eventually makeup what we call the skin barrier and also is responsible for the appearance of skin. Depending on your age, the structure and the function of the barrier may differ.
In today's episode, we’re going to cover the following topics:
Skin barrier dysfunction
How humidity affects the skin
The importance of a hydrating skincare routine

Understand the purpose behind each step and get maximum results. Discover how skin type affects your skincare routine steps, products to use and learn exactly how to build the best regimen for you. The following is applicable for both day and night skincare routine steps. For night time skincare, you may omit sunscreen, and also add on application of a sheet mask and eye cream. Build a purposeful skincare routine with these steps:
Day and Night Skincare Routine Steps
Skincare Routine Step 1 Makeup removal
Skincare Routine Step 2 Second cleanse with a lathering agent
Skincare Routine Step 3 Serum application
Skincare Routine Step 4 Emulsion/Lotion
Skincare Routine Step 5 Facial Mist
Skincare Routine Step 6 Sunscreen (always applied last)
Optional Skincare Routine Step: Face & Eye Cream application
Weekly treatment routine:

Have you ever found yourself wondering if your sunscreen can also work as a moisturiser? This episode goes into the science of sunscreen formulations—what to look out for and how to remove it properly.
I would say that using a dermatologist recommended sunscreen with moisturising properties is ideal but it is more important for people to understand the two separate functions. Sun protection is essential to minimise one’s risk of skin cancer and photoaging but it is a separate function from that of a moisturiser. The fundamentals of cosmetic formulation would be that every added ingredient would lower the concentration of the other active ingredients. It is simply not possible for a sunscreen product to contain sufficient moisturising ingredients compared to a product that is a moisturiser base alone.

K-beauty is also known for the Omega-Light, hailed as the answer to express photofacials in clinics and spas. But there was one problem—it was really rather bulky and inconvenient, for those who wanted to enjoy its benefits at home. Today’s podcast goes into the design of the ideal skin and hair home photon therapy device and its not a handheld one. Here’s a spoiler:
The design of your device determines the effects. In a clinic setting, the machines used to deliver photo facials are powered to meet minimum energy standards. An appropriate dose elicits a positive effect on skin and hair.
Here’s what we’ll cover:
Skin & Hair Home Photon Therapy
Safety concerns with home use light therapy devices
Home use handheld photon light devices
LED face mask light therapy for home use

I am Dr.TWL, a board certified dermatologist and I’d love to share with you some of my best skincare tips for glowing skin, beginning with cleansing. Choosing the right cleansing regimen is the most important part of any skincare routine for glowing skin and it begins with understanding skin types.
Skincare Tip #1: Cleanse mindfully
✔️ Use a gentle washcloth (unless you have extremely dry/sensitive skin)
✔️ A reusable soft microfibre pad can help attract the particulate matter settled on skin
✔️ PM2.5, airborne pollutants are known to accelerate skin aging and worsen skin conditions like acne
✔️ Cleansing is the most important step in any skincare regimen because this is one skincare tip that directly targets the skin microbiome which is the basis for glowing skin
✔️ When the skin microbiome is disturbed, skin conditions like acne, rosacea, eczema result.
Skincare Tip #2: Don’t use a toner. Use facial essences instead.
Does your skin feel greasy from the inside but yet looks dehydrated, flaky and inflamed on the surface? Here’s why.
✔️ Toners of the past were marketed as being astringents to remove excess oil.
✔️ The key skincare tip here is to regulate oil production and not to superficially remove oil like an astringent toner does.
✔️ Doing so leads to a dehydrated-oily skin phenomenon.
✔️ Use a facial essence or an emulsion
✔️ Use oil in water emulsions to moisturise oily skin. Don't use creams or skip moisturiser if you want glowing skin.
✔️ Face mist hack
Skincare Tip #3: Use your favorite moisturiser as your sleeping mask
THE SKINCARE SCAM ALERT: All sleeping mask formulas are the same as moisturisers, as these are leave-on rather than wash-off ingredients. They work by absorbing onto the skin to produce moisturising effects and contribute to glowing skin.

Flash Skin Tips #1: Does your skin feel greasy from the inside but yet looks dehydrated, flaky and inflamed on the surface? Here’s why.
Toners of the past were marketed as being astringents to remove excess oil.
The key is to regulate oil production and not to superficially remove oil like an astringent toner does.
Doing so leads to a dehydrated-oily skin phenomenon.
Dermatologist Skincare Tips:
Use a facial essence or an emulsion
K-beauty inspired facial essences are water-based. Water itself is a fantastic astringent/cleanser on its own—without stripping skin dry. This is why our skin feels cleansed after a bath. For the same reason dermatologists advise applying water compresses to wounds to gently cleanse and remove exudates. Use oil in water emulsions to moisturise oily skin. Don't use creams or skip moisturiser.
Face mist hack
I completely eliminate toners in my skincare regimen. Instead my facial mist is multi-purposed as an on-the-go cleanser, toner and moisturiser. I choose one that is free of potentially irritating skincare actives like AHA, BHAs and retinol. The formulation should include a mix of different hydrating ingredients such as glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, polyglutamic acid and also antioxidants. In this case, especially in summer climates, I simply spray on my face mist right after cleansing and I’m done!
