In today's special episode, to honor Male Survivor Awareness Day 2025, which is recognized in the US on October 25 each year, I wanted to replay the Video Recording I did to honor the first Male Survivor Awareness Day in 2022 of a live event I hosted within the Husband Material Community which was recorded and resulted in a Husband Material Podcast episode. The Audio from the episode was used on *This* podcast for episodes 5, 6 & 7. This time I am making 1 long (almost 2 hour!) video of the event. The event was the result of efforts by myself, Drew Boa, Dr. Doug Carpenter, with many contributions from Survivors within the Husband Material Community who submitted poetry and other items to be shared, some live, some previously recorded and some read by others. There was also a time for Questions and Answers by the live Zoom audience. The goal for this event (and the “Day” in total) was to help non-survivors understand and work with survivors to help support them on their healing journeys..

Scott was born and raised in Central Wisconsin. Last year he and his wife, Dorothy, celebrated 40 years of marriage. While they lived 12 years as missionaries overseas, they now have moved back home to be near extended family. It's been only since 2020 that he started to dig deeper into his past trauma, including childhood sexual abuse, that had buried. Much of it was forgotten and some was just pushed aside with the “help” of spiritual bypass.

Sean Wheeler is a survivor of pre-teen sex trafficking for almost five years. During that time he was used in child sexual abuse material. While his family moved away from that area, other abusers would find him until age 19 when he determined to no longer be used. In 2018 Sean founded Starfish Ministries in Colorado to provide a voice for boys in the public arena. He works directly with several other organizations and has been involved in lobbying Congress for pending legislation approval. He provides HT 101 and above trauma-informed training. Sean is also ordained and works in the prison ministry, even with convicted sex offenders. He has been interviewed on 100 Huntley Street in Toronto and the 700 Club. His story has been told in Psychology Today and other publications. Today over 6 million people world wide have heard his story.

“Peter W.,” who recently turned 60, has been married for over 36 years and has three children. He has struggled with depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts for many years and sought help at a residential program two years ago. During his time in the program, he opened up for the first time about a sexual assault he experienced at age 26. While he has been working through this trauma in therapy, he was recently assaulted again. Since then, other incidents triggered repressed memories of childhood sexual abuse. Despite these challenges, Peter is in recovery and hopes that sharing his story will help others.

Robert Maniscalco is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and has been a professional creative his entire adult life. Born in 1959 in Detroit, he has lived in New York, New Orleans and currently in Charleston. His commission portraits and fine art are part of over a thousand collections throughout North America. In Detroit he hosted Artbeat on PBS and founded the Maniscalco Gallery. As a fine artist, he likes to work in multiple series. Perhaps his most enduring series is that of a commission portrait artist, immortalizing Supreme Court Justices as well as children and families. Robert blogs on a wide range of subjects and written three other books, The Fishly and Point of Art. His fourth book, an Amazon #1 bestseller, is a full color drawing/painting method, called The Power of Positive Painting. He is an actor/director, writer/playwright, musician/composer and teacher, a former Adjunct Professor of fine art and theatre at Charleston Southern University and drawing illustration at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. Robert has expanded his creative milieu to include courtroom sketching, covering the Dylann Roof and Michael Slager trials in Charleston. His multi-disciplinary play, Vincent John Doe, received its world premiere, to rave reviews, during the 2018 and 2019 Piccolo Spoleto Festivals. He is now a regular exhibitor in the Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibition. Robert was also one of the 200 audience members on Oprah Winfrey’s groundbreaking episode on male childhood sexual abuse.

We have previously talked about disclosure and why it is difficult for male survivors to disclose to anyone about the trauma they experienced. With that in mind, we discuss how to make male survivors feel safe and comfortable enough to share their stories.

Kyle Drossel is a 31-year-old man who has been through a lot. He recently found his way back to God, and that has helped him feel more at peace. He likes to spend his free time hiking and running, which helps him clear his head. But Kyle still struggles with relationships because of something that happened to him when he was 13. The assistant fire chief of Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, someone he trusted, sexually assaulted him. This experience led Kyle down a bad path of using drugs and alcohol, but he's happy to say that he's sober now. He wants to help others who have gone through similar things, so he started a group called "Breaking the Silence." Kyle's goal is to help men feel comfortable talking about their problems and getting help. He hopes that by sharing his story, he can inspire others to do the same and create a community where men can support each other. Kyle also wants to spread awareness about the dangers of turning to drugs and alcohol as a way to cope with trauma, and he hopes that his story can help prevent others from going down the same path he did.
