I fell in love with Mossy Creek : a true limestone spring creek in the style of the hallowed Letort, back in my Washington D.C. hotel days. It’s the Shenandoah section of the limestone rich Cumberland Valley that goes down the Amish country/ Lee Highway Rte.11. As it runs down from Mt Solon in the Alleghenies , Mossy and its selective browns and stunningly colored rainbows sip bwo’s, sulphers, slash terrestrials and maul sculpins year-round. It’s the closest thing to a big sky Montana/ Idaho/ Wyoming vista and experience you will witness east of the Mississippi.
Couple the other spring creeks he has there with all the Blue Ridge / Allegheny Mountain indigenous brook trout streams with classic mayfly hatches that number in the in the hundreds, and you have hidden gems that ooze beauty. Couple those with great trout tailwaters, and the amazing bass fishing of the Shenandoah and James, and you have truly one of the greatest fly fishing states in the country! I cannot speak more superlatives about what my very good friend Colby has to offer at Mossy Creek Fly Fishing in Harrisonburg. His boutique fly shop is a true Civil War period historical monument and must be seen. Plus, he will show you bass that embody all I have written about in selectivity.

We have had many older, distinguished gentlemen and young passionate ladies.
Countless Distinguished authors, iconic modern living legends that have paved the way of our fly fishing knowledge.
The Brits, The Scottish, Irish, Norwegians, Icelanders, Canadians and our American ground- zero roots. Tons of knowledge bombs have come across our airwaves if you go back and listen and learn.
But now this young gent : an ER Nurse, approached me and I listened and liked.
He believes in time on the water and having a plan with a purpose- to learn, improve and be open- minded.
And for a young age, he sees the whole spectrum- may I present Nick Sage. Millennials are the new future icons of our passion.

In the U.K., fly fishing has always been a proper gentleman’s game. Women were sort of looked down on at the elite chalk stream clubs and beats.
Lucinda Ewin is a real, passionate, sincere and simply fabulous fly angler in love with Atlantic salmon, sea trout, and brown trout. She is paying her dues which is something so rare in today’s agenda filled, social media twisted ‘same old’ monotony. Sometimes the more knowledge and wisdom we accrue the more we think we must prove a point. We so quickly forget that at one time we are all beginners/hacks/ and most of us still are in the bigger picture of it all. Lucinda is the breath of fresh air of someone loving what she does as a fly tackle rep, being a mother, traveling and photographing her journey. She still has that spark and passion while studying the Spey cast, understanding brown trout, hatches and how amazing sea trout are - all my Nexus book loves. I couldn’t wait for this podcast to be aired…enjoy the passion that is Lucinda
Notes….. let her rip!!!!

Next up on the ‘Trout Stalker’ series is a topic I adore dearly. The “British Invasion” and their iconic contributions to fly fishing for trout has come in 4 waves. First, it was the genesis and invention of the sport in Hertfordshire in 1496 with Dame Juliana and Walton with the “ A Treatyse of Fysshynge wyth an Angle” Then it was the foundation of modern fly fishing on the Hampshire/ Wiltshire chalk streams with Marryat, Halford, Skues and Sawyer. The modern era saw the introspective works of Goddard ( Goddard Caddis fame) and Clarke with the epic work “ The Trout and the Fly”. But this 4 wave is perhaps the most groundbreaking and introspective of them all. Today, authors/ anglers and trout behaviorists: Peter Hayes and Don Stazicker, with their underwater cameras and introspective, highly empirical prose, have invaded a trout’s aquatic dining room and gives us a confirmation of what the American masters have learned about trout feeding behavior. Their new book: “ The Flies that Trout Prefer” is a modern masterpiece and a must for every trout angler. It probes the world of meniscus chaos: ‘junk flies/ shucks’ and how still borns/ cripples ( casualties) emergers, and why some of the most unruly and awkward flies appeal to a trout’s fancy rather than the most perfectly tied ones. No serious fly angler can miss this podcast and not have this book !

Trout Stalker Series Part 1
It is one of the most iconic waters of modern American Fly Fishing history. The Letort is the American chalk stream/ limestone spring creek equivalent to the River’s Test and Itchen in England. In the Cumberland Valley it was Marinaro, Fox, Shenk, Koch and so many other Letort Regulars that created a legacy of terrestrials, dry fly matching the hatch , minutiae, stream conservation work - the innovations are endless. Most importantly it’s about a wild Loch Leven strain brown that has endured one chemical spill after another for decades. The lady flows through a growing urban sprawl, strip malls and housing projects, gets her ground water sucked out of it, and yet it’s very resilient and migratory browns have developed a life survival strategy to combat all the hardships thrown at it including climate change.
Join guest river keeper and guide: Neil Sunday, and host Matt Supinski as they discuss in part 1 its history dating back to the French and Indian war, its watershed from head to tail and beyond; and it’s modern legacy. The main point of the podcast is conservation and how to protect the Letort and get it more friends. Part II is about the unique wild strain browns, becoming the ultimate stalker in the hunt for Mr. Bigs- then hatches, tactics, flies , tackle for spring creeks etc … don’t miss this one!

Chasing Chrome Series - Part 5
I have guided and fished Great Lakes summer steelhead now for almost 36 years. Between my brief hotel career stints on the West Coast and Indiana, I have written and explored more about our Great Lakes Summer Skamania steelhead than perhaps no one else. Looking for answers and the history of Washington State’s iconic Washougal River’s Skamania strain fish’s introduction into Lake Michigan by Indiana, brought me to one of the finest books ever written on those fish: Dry Line Steelhead by Bill McMillan. Join me and my guest John: Bill’s son, as we discuss John’s epic steelhead conservation work and fighting for the plight of the most beautiful migratory salmonid fish that swims- Washington State’s Washougal steelhead. John is President of the West Coast based Conservation Angler group. We discuss his dad and the fishing legacy of dry line steelheading today- don’t miss this one!

Norway - the Land of the Midnight Sun, has a breathtaking and unparalleled Nordic magnetism- a raw beauty that no other country on the planet can boast. Its unbelievably stunning fjords, and soaring and austere snow capped mountains, garnish some of the most majestic rivers on earth. These harbor some of the planet’s incredibly large Atlantic salmon to be found- up to 90 pounds have been recorded, along with sea trout, brown trout and mayfly/ stonefly hatches once in the greatest quantities imaginable. But it is in these rivers- the playground of all of Europe, that our beloved salmon could have been loved to death. From the thousands of salmon fish farms feeding the insatiable appetite of the world for Omega -3 ‘s and the health benefits of salmon, have come the spread of disease, and pollution of wild genetics by escaped salmon breeding with wild ones , Add the decades of killing of big brood stock salmon by anglers, and climate change’s ugly head, could our magnificent salmon of the Viking gods met their tragedy- or Viking Ragnarök? With the river closures implemented this summer, more is needed to protect these magnificent beasts from decimation. We raise a skål to you in helping us educate and love these truly magnificent creatures.

Broadcasting from the River Dee, of Scotland I can only speak superlatives:
” It is a stark and austere landscape of unparalleled magnetism and raw beauty- everything about this once called Caledonia breathes the free spirited Scottish will to survive. It is a badge of courage and tartan plaid not common in todays’s timid and dwarfed world. From the rugged highland mountains and winds that sweep through the moors and glens of the north country; to the lowland agricultural and industrial plains, the Scottish people ooze a charm and strong willed working class vibe, which shines though their rough to understand brogues and unwillingness to be conquered. From the last dividing line of the Roman conquest and Hadrian's Wal, the spirit we have seen in Braveheart of staving off the British- in it all shows the spirt of Scotland. But it is in the rivers and its salmon- the playgrounds of the Royalty like Balmoral on the River Dee- the river beats of Robert Harper’s landlords and noble heritage, shines on , despite dwindling numbers of returning salmon. Long live Scotland!

Part 2: “Atlantic Salmon on the Run” Series
Summer on the River’ episodes. Despite challenges being faced by Salmo salar around the globe, northern Ireland and its River Foyle system , with its headwater rivers the Mourne and Finn, are experiencing an excellent summer run of grilse and adult salmon. Plus the well- rounded diversity with its resident native brown trout and sea run browns, adds to the Nexus mix. The delightful and charming Irish people, the natural beauty , the golf- and sightseeing of probably one of the most beautiful countries on the globe , just adds to this magnificent place- ( video clip below, twin brother Jarllath Spey casting a long- belly line, is the ghillie on the Glenmore Castle estate on the River Finn owned by Michael Hucknell, known as singer Simply Red)…can’t wait to be back there next year!. Airs this weekend… next stop, the conundrum that is the stunning and breathtaking Norway. Please stay cool and hydrated, and watch river temps- support our trout and salmon as they try to survive this hellish summer !- cooling is in sight

Our fascination and allure with Salmon salar dates back to Neanderthal man and ancient Roman civilization. It is truly the fish of kings and queens, and rivers that run through regal estates, and vast wilderness areas in the north like Labrador, Arctic Russia and Scandinavia . Why I am so grateful we have a thriving Atlantic salmon fishery in Michigan. But to the gastronomic world , it could be one of the most cherished dishes we have ever come to love to death . However, to the fly fisher, it is by far the most sporting, most savagely beautiful, and beguiling fish that will rise to take the fly. Its relationship to the highly sought after brown trout makes Atlantic salmon the king of all bucket list game fish
Though many Atlantic salmon fisheries are experiencing hardships in the world due to the effects of over-harvesting, commercial fish farms and the extremes of climate change, the Gaspe of Quebec’s rivers and wild Atlantic salmon are thriving very well, thanks to forward thinking and tight ecological management.
David Bishop is one of the top Atlantic salmon guides on the planet- bar none! And together with host Matthew Supinski , they bring you the secret world of diving into the fish’s mind and spirit, tactics and flies, and current world challenges facing the courageous Salmo salar and its verve to survive- don’t miss this one!

Since Jim Bashline wrote the Bible on night fishing in 1973: “Night Fishing for Trout”, our passion for stalking big Truttasaurus browns at night on big mayfly hatches like drakes, Hexes, Isonychia and big stoneflies has become an obsession! Add in the whole new mousing craze, you now have fly fishing in the night a state of art much different than just feeling the tug and hearing creepy things that go “ bump in the night” . With Infrared night vision head lamps, and glo- in- the dark lines and fly materials, we have perfected the passion to the next level. Our Night Stalker guest is a trained fisheries biologist and guide who rows in the night in search of sounds foretelling a big, night monster Truttasaurus brown on the hunt for flesh and blood- don’t miss this one!

Every time I go to this river and see the stark plains, rolling hills and buttes, I can only think of the bad day at the office General Custer had, wishing he never got on his horse that June day as his troops were rightly so demolished by the proud natives. As opposed to Custer on the other hand, those German brown trout settlers to the new world that swam up the Big Horn from the Yellowstone; or were haphazardly stocked by a settler’s milk canister, were on the road to a trutta Mecca. Once they felt the Bighorn’s cold waters and tasted the amazingly fertile food-rich fauna, they established one of the finest brown trout dynasties on the planet. Bighorn book author/ guide, and former Buffalonian: Steve Galetta, discusses the nuances, hatches, terrestrials and tactics needed to fool its bigger browns and rainbows that swim in these vast Montana/Wyoming American trout waters-don’t miss this one!
