Grinding to a Halt is a podcast that explores who people are, what they do, and how they find the balance in between. In every episode, I take a deep dive into the life, career, process, and motivations of my guests. From business leaders, writers, musicians, podcasters, and more, I want to know what drives them and how they hold onto their humanity when their name becomes a brand.

30: Empty Words From Empty People

There is a lot of noise out there, a lot of people trying to sell you answers they don't believe in.

This week, I talk about some things I have seen recently that reminded me of the importance of the words we say and how we present ourselves.

29: 10.8.95 (The Burden of Belief)

I have a tattoo on my wrist, it is a cross with the date 10.8.95 on it.

That was the day I became a Christian.

Behind my right ear, I have another tattoo.

It is the date my son was born.

That was the day my faith began to die.

24: No One Wants to Work Anymore

This generation is so lazy, right? RIGHT?

Wrong.

Every generation claims the one that comes after them is lazy and will never amount to anything. But what is the thing that they think they amounted to?

Why should we strive to be like our parents and grandparents who hated their jobs and whose only goal was to retire?

And who, if anyone, is at fault for this pattern?

I mentioned Ed Zitron's show Better Offline in the episode, I highly recommend it and this episode in particular.

23: Kickstart My Art with Allie Goertz

This week I am joined by writer and musician Allie Goertz to talk about her new album Peeled Back, her Nine Inch Nails cover album, which is out today!

We discuss the process of making the album, and her decision to use Kickstarter to realize her vision for the project fully, and we talk about intentionally creating an environment where people feel comfortable bringing their ideas to the table.

In the outro, I talk about how this conversation has challenged me and my creative pursuits.

I'm not saying I will launch a Kickstarter, but I am not, not saying it.

21: Day of the Homeschooled Child

Today, April 30th, is the second annual Day of the Homeschooled Child, this was started by The Coalition for Responsible Home Education and is dedicated to shining a light on the need for more oversight and protections for children that are being homeschooled.

In honor of the day, we are doing something a little different.

Friend and collaborator on the show, Ross Greene and I have a conversation about homeschooling.

He is considering homeschooling his daughter as she goes into high school so Ross interviews me about growing up homeschooled, my thoughts on it, things that worked and didn't and resources for those that are homeschooling or looking to start.

CRHE is a great resource and they are doing amazing work to protect children when the state doesn't.

He also created the artwork for this show.

We get into a lot in this episode, from standing our ground against bigots to our first impressions of eachother when we met at work (we are former co-workers). We get into punk music, play a movie game, and let the conversation take us wherever it wants.

Ross also edited the video for this episode, so as the show explores different forms of media, Ross's hand will be all over it.

15: Miriam Traore

This week on Grinding to a Halt, I am joined by Miriam Traore.

I met Miriam in the Discord for The Daily Zeitgeist and after a brief exchange with her on there, I thought she would bring a lot of great insight into what it is like to be a woman of color in the tech space and she did not disappoint. Miriam is funny, insightful, and engaging and in the end, we share a lot of the same hopes for what working in the modern age can and should be.

As we discuss in the episode, Miriam is on the hunt for her next role so if you are someone you know is looking for a kickass program manager, reach out to Miriam here.
