Benny P is back to co-host another episode of Misadventures.
In this episode, Tom reflects on his ride around the coast of Wales - a three-week journey of endurance, reflection, and a new love for the sea he never knew he needed.
Ben brings stories from Chamonix, convincing us all we need a slice of that alpine magic next summer.
Along the way, we dive into Tom’s unlikely love affair with volunteering at Reading Festival (yes, that Reading Festival) and Ben’s debrief from the Berlin Marathon.
Throw in some parkrun tourism, a pinch of the Isle of Wight, a dash of indie sleaze nostalgia, and a ridiculous story from the Great British Misadventures jar – and trust us, this one’s guaranteed to make you laugh.

At the age of 50, while most people are thinking about slowing down, Jacquetta Megarry decided to speed up - on foot.
A career in ICT was swapped for muddy boots and mountain paths after one frustrating but hugely adventurous hike along the West Highland Way sparked a bold idea: to create waterproof, lightweight, beautifully crafted guidebooks that could actually survive the Scottish weather.
That spark became Rucksack Readers, now a 25-year success story with over 40 titles covering the UK’s best long-distance trails - and a few far-flung adventures from Kilimanjaro to Antarctica.
In this episode, we about the joy of multi-day hiking, the art of turning passion into purpose, and the power of taking a giant leap midlife.
Jacquetta shares the lessons she’s learned from a second career built on adventure, her advice for tackling altitude sickness, and we discuss how to make the most of every summer before it slips away.
It’s a conversation not just about walking - but also about courage, creativity, and how to keep exploring, no matter your age.

Horatio Clare is one of Britain’s most captivating writers and broadcasters. From trekking across two continents following the migration of swallows, to voyaging on container ships, to writing about mental health and the natural world, his work is rooted in curiosity, humanity, and a deep urge to understand the world around us.
In this episode, we dive into his brand new book We Came by Sea – a fearless exploration of migration across the English Channel and the stories of those who are helping in what Horatio hails as one of the great search and rescue operations of all time.
Horatio talks about immersing himself in both sides of the debate, from spending time in right-wing pubs to listening on the ground in Dover. He shares what he witnessed first-hand at the frontline of Britain’s migration crisis, and why he believes current government policies are not just failing but wasting money.
We also step behind the curtain of his writing life: how he shapes ideas, the craft of putting words to paper, and why writing remains for him both an art and an act of public service.

What happens when a group of wild swimmers take on the pollution giants and fight for the soul of their local river? In this episode I sit down with filmmakers Charlotte Sawyer and Aggie Nyagari, the creative duo behind the acclaimed documentary Rave on for the Avon, to explore how their cameras captured one community’s joyful yet defiant battle to reclaim the River Avon.
We dive deep into the questions of access, ecology, and the very human need to connect with water. Charlotte and Aggie reveal how the Avon swimmers turned playfulness into protest, from data collection to mermaid costumes - and why sewage, though shocking, is just 4% of the problem.
Our conversation ranges from the poetic - attempts to give the river legal personhood - to the profoundly personal, including Meg’s extraordinary story of marrying the River Avon. We discuss how the film’s reception is already reshaping perceptions of rivers, and why falling in love with nature might be the most radical thing we can do in the face of environmental crisis.
This is an episode about activism, creativity, and community - but above all, it’s about remembering that rivers are not just scenery. They are living, breathing systems that we depend on, and perhaps even kin.
In May 2025, Sarah Ruggins made history.
She became the fastest person to cycle from John O’Groats to Land’s End and back, covering the 1,677-mile route in an astonishing 5 days, 11 hours, and 14 minutes.
Sarah didn’t just smash the women’s record - she claimed the outright record.
But what makes her achievement all the more extraordinary is everything she had to overcome to get there.
Just over two years earlier, she had barely ridden a bike. Before that, she spent years recovering from a debilitating illness that stripped her of her physical strength and sense of identity. And yet, through grit, precision, and an unshakeable mindset, she transformed herself from a complete novice into one of the most elite endurance cyclists in the world.
This episode is about more than athletic achievement - it’s about radical transformation.
It’s a story of what happens when you set an audacious goal, back it with discipline, and believe that setbacks are just the start of something greater.

Tom and Benny P are back with more tales of triumph, chaos and the curious art of blagging a bargain.
Fresh from The Speed Project, Benny P shares what it was like to run a non-stop relay from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and still somehow make a decent coffee at the end.
Meanwhile, Tom’s been gallivanting around Northumberland and Cornwall without spending a single penny on accommodation - he spills the beans on how he did it, and the magic he found along the way.
We also reveal the trick to getting into the Eden Project for free and there’s a surprise cameo from a very famous Hollywood Brit who dropped in on Tom’s socials.
Plus, we draw from the Great British Misadventures pot and hear one of Tom’s funny and/or embarrassing stories from his own misadventures.

Charlie Bennett is a regenerative farmer whose passion for history and storytelling transforms seemingly ordinary farming fields into a tapestry of marvels and hidden tales in an episode where wisdom, wit, and wonder converge.
When Charlie inherited some farmland in Northumberland, he decided to bring it back to what he calls "common sense farming" - with sustainability, re-wilding and community at its heart.
His adventure on the land has seen him plant over 40,000 trees, return stretches of farmland back to nature and persuade Coca-Cola to build him 11 ponds - all part of a bid to boost biodiversity while keeping the farm thriving and productive.
Charlie’s storytelling and unyielding curiosity offer a fresh vision for the future - a reminder that sometimes, the most profound journeys begin right at the roots of the land.

From childhood struggles to scaling life’s biggest challenges, Alex Staniforth’s journey is one of resilience, adventure, and mental strength.
After two failed attempts to summit Everest, and surviving an avalanche on the mountain's most fatal year, Alex was forced to shift his mindset, realising that true achievement isn’t always about reaching the top - sometimes, no matter how hard we try, external forces are simply out of our control.
These experiences reshaped his perspective on resilience, leadership, and overcoming adversity in all areas of life.
Alex opens up about the power of mindset, the lessons learned from embracing discomfort, and how the outdoors became his greatest teacher.
He also discusses recent attempts to run the UK's Coast to Coast and his work with Mind Over Mountains, a charity helping others find clarity and confidence through nature.
With his next big challenge ahead, this conversation is a reminder that adventure is about more than just the destination—it’s about the setbacks, the growth, and the courage to keep moving forward.

Without knowing anyone who had taken this path before, she embarked on a deeply personal adventure: choosing to conceive via a sperm donor.
In our conversation, Tracey shares how she navigated the process, from selecting a donor to undergoing IVF. We discuss the societal perceptions of single parenthood, the challenges she faced, and the unexpected joys that made it all worthwhile.

How far would you be willing to go to achieve a target marathon time?
For Nick Bester - his journey became a three-year quest, across 7 marathon attempts, to break the sub-2:20 marathon - a target he'd set himself once he broke 2:25
A relentless competitor and motivator, across 10 years, Nick has transformed from a recreational runner and corporate banker into a sub-elite marathoner and one of the most dedicated figures in the UK running scene.
As running coach, founder of Best Athletics, and Adidas Runners London Captain, Nick unpacks his extraordinary story of how he has pushed his body and mind to the limit, facing failures, self doubt and constantly re-tweaking his approach after each race to finally achieve his goal.
He takes us through every step of the journey: the races where things fell apart, the pivotal changes he made, and the mindset shifts that ultimately led him to success.
But this isn’t just a story about running fast - Nick opens up about quitting his corporate life to pursue his passion for coaching, the struggles he faced setting up his own brand and business, the lessons he’s learned along the way, and he reveals a mind-blowing marathon that I believe is far more impressive that breaking sub 2:20.
This is a story of grit, resilience, and the pursuit of something bigger than just a finishing time.
Whether you’re a runner chasing your own PB or someone looking for a lesson in perseverance, this episode is one you won’t want to miss.

Welcome to a very special episode of the Great British Adventures Podcast - a countdown of the top 10 episodes of all time as collated from the listening figures from Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
Whether you’re a longtime listener or this is your very first time tuning in, I hope this episode inspires you to embrace adventure in whatever form it takes for you.
Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned from these conversations, it’s that adventure isn’t just about climbing the highest peaks or crossing the biggest oceans. It can simply be about stepping outside your own comfort zone, saying yes to possibility, and living with a sense of curiosity and wonder.

Running has the power to transform our mental health, but let’s face it - it's not easy. It takes effort, discipline, and dedication.
For many, staying motivated and making running a consistent habit can feel like an uphill battle.
So, how do you turn running into something positive that sticks?
Pete Cooper believes he’s cracked the code.
As the co-founder of Coopah, a personalised run coaching platform, Pete has made it his mission to make running more accessible, enjoyable, and sustainable for all.
Pete’s journey to launching this app is deeply personal—rooted in grief, mental health struggles, and profound loss.
At 23, Pete faced the unexpected loss of his mother and best friend. Two tragedies compounded by his struggles with OCD which caused him to suffer grief and depression.
His battles were so intense that he came close to taking his own life.
But Pete’s story is also one of transformation, where he turned his own pain into a source of inspiration for others facing their own battles.
In this episode Pete opens up about living with suicidal thoughts, managing his OCD, and navigating life with a heart condition, all while finding solace in running and community.
Pete shares his recent experiences running with communities in Pakistan where running is an expensive sport, and he reminisces of the profound joy he had when he was younger, watching his mum blossom into a great runner.
Beyond his personal story, Pete discusses how he was able to build the Coopah running app with no prior tech experience, his mission to encourage more people to take up running, and his role in establishing a refugee run club - a testament to his belief in running as a force for connection and healing.

Fiona English made headlines in 2023 with her open letter to the Boston Marathon, challenging their lack of pregnancy deferral options.
Her advocacy, alongside that of other pioneers in women’s running, led to the Boston Marathon introducing a policy allowing pregnant and postpartum athletes to defer their entry.
Her courage to stand up against longstanding rules, driven by her belief in fairness, is a reminder that no one is too small to make meaningful change.
Fiona is also an exceptional athlete. From completing her first marathon in 5:47 to achieving a Boston qualifying time of under 3:30, her journey exemplifies extraordinary dedication and perseverance.
Just one year after giving birth, she ran the Boston Marathon in an impressive 3:43.
In this conversation, we discuss Fiona’s running journey, her fight for fair policies in marathon racing, and the importance of making running more inclusive for women.
She also shares insights into balancing motherhood and running, showcasing the resilience and determination required to excel in both.

In loving memory of Dean Jones, a much beloved member of the Midnight Runners Community who sadly passed a few days after this recording.
Ben Palmer joins the podcast in the first of a new regular series of check-ins where we dive into his and Tom's latest adventures—and misadventures.
As a highly skilled runner and founder of Trailside Coffee, Ben brings the perfect blend of insight and humour to which I know will be a great addition to the podcast. Together, we'll take a lighter view on life, while also digging into topics that matter to us deeply.
In this inaugural episode of the series, Ben shares his secrets to breaking the 2:40 marathon barrier and reveals what makes a truly great coffee.
We also celebrate Tom’s recent personal milestone -completing his 1,001-day run streak, and discuss how he feels after finally giving it up, with a few listener questions thrown in for good measure.
We also discuss Tom’s recent cycling tour across Europe, where he passed through 9 countries across 29 days. But while his photos and videos may have looked great, did he really enjoy it?
And finally, we check in with two podcast alumni who are on their own incredible journeys. We play exclusive update from Deo Kato, currently running from Cape Town to London, and Jonty Brown, fresh off the launch of his exciting new venture, RunLimited.

“Despite all our accomplishments, we owe our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.” – Paul Harvey
Claire Mackenzie and Colin Ramsay are the visionary filmmakers behind the independent, British documentary, "Six Inches of Soil", that is pioneering conversations about the future of farming and the environment not just in Britain, but around the world.
Their film follows three young British farmers who are working to restore soil health and promote biodiversity in response to the environmental challenges posed by industrial farming practices.
Recorded in January this year, Claire and Colin share their journey from concept to screen and how their film is sparking discussions across the country, bringing attention the importance of soil not just as the foundation of agriculture but as a natural solution for our fight against climate change, particularly in storing carbon and water retention.

Michelle Beaver is someone who cannot say no to a life challenge.
As someone who was once scared of flying, foreign food, and camping, she has spent the past 10 years conquering these fears through grand adventures, from trekking the Great Wall of China, scaling Kilimanjaro, and camping in the Grand Canyon
And her secret in how she has found the confidence in putting herself out her comfort zone? Doing them with a lovely bunch of like-minded people, in a group environment, through organised tours.
Michelle has become rather addicted to booking group adventure tours, where the hard work of planning and logistics are taken care for you, so you are able to best enjoy the experience with strangers, who by the end of the tour become your best friends.
And she understands the importance of living a full life. As a cardiology nurse, Michelle sees ill health on a daily basis, and when a series of bereavements happened in family, she knew she needed to take action to make her life as full and adventurous as it could be.
In this episode of the Great British Adventures Podcast, Michelle shares stories from her adventures, why she does her press up challenge and how she inspires the nursing community to be more fit.
