Kingsley Amis: A BBC Radio Drama Collection: I Spy Strangers, I Want It Now, All Free Now based on Girl 20 and more by Kingsley Amis
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/760330 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Kingsley Amis: A BBC Radio Drama Collection: I Spy Strangers, I Want It Now, All Free Now based on Girl 20 and more Author: Kingsley Amis Narrator: Anna Calder-Marshall, Tom Watson, Ken Stott, Iain Cuthbertson, Gayle Hunnicutt, Full Cast, Peter Jeffrey, Freddie Jones, Christopher Cazenove, Robert Hardy, Alan Bennett, Nigel Anthony Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 6 hours 30 minutes Release date: August 8, 2024 Genres: Classics Publisher's Summary: Adaptations of Kingley Amis’s great novels and acclaimed short stories Novelist, poet and critic Kingsley Amis was one of Britain’s greatest post-war writers. A master of comic fiction, he came to fame in 1954, and won the 1986 Booker Prize for The Old Devils. Included in this collection are dramatisations of seven of his short stories and two novels, all imbued with his characteristic wit and social satire. We begin with ‘To See the Sun’, a tantalising tale of vampires, a mad Scots librarian, a handsome Englishman and a Countess, set in 1920s Dacia. In ‘Moral Fibre’, a Welsh librarian tangles with a social worker determined to save a young girl from sin, while in ‘All the Blood Within Me’, Alec attends the funeral of the only woman he has ever loved: and faces some uncomfortable truths. Tensions run high in ‘I Spy Strangers’ as a group of soldiers in 1945 hold a mock parliament; poet A E Potter questions the value of his art in ‘Dear Illusions’ and in ‘Affairs of Death’, the confessions of the Scottish King Macbeth trouble the conscience of Pope Leo X. Set in the late ’60s, I Want It Now centres around ambitious TV personality Ronnie Appleyard, who pursues wealthy Simona Quick for her money, only to fall in love. And recently recovered in the BBC’s Treasure Hunt, ‘Something Strange’ features four inhabitants of a space capsule, who have unusual experiences to report. Based on Amis’s classic novel Girl, 20 and written by Tony Bilbow, All Free Now is a hilarious observation of the Sixties’ permissive society. Please note: I Want It Now is an archive dramatisation from 1977, and the language used reflects some of the attitudes of that time. Due to the archive nature of some of the pieces, the sound quality may vary. Unto a Good Land by Vilhelm Moberg

Title: Unto a Good Land Author: Vilhelm Moberg Narrator: Ann Marie Arvdal Richardson Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 17 hours 50 minutes Release date: May 14, 2024 Genres: Classics Publisher's Summary: Considered one of Sweden's greatest twentieth-century writers, Vilhelm Moberg created the characters Karl Oskar and Kristina Nilsson to portray the joys and tragedies of daily life for early Swedish immigrants in America. His consistently faithful depiction of these humble people's lives is a major strength of the Emigrant Novels. Moberg's extensive research in the papers of Swedish emigrants in archival collections enabled him to incorporate many details of pioneer life. First published between 1949 and 1959 in Swedish, these four books were considered a single work by Moberg, who intended that they be read as documentary novels. These reprint editions contain introductions written by Roger McKnight of Gustavus Adolphus College, and they restore Moberg's bibliography not included in earlier English editions. The second book in the series, Unto a Good Land, opens in the summer of 1850 as the emigrants disembark in New York City. Their journey to a new home in Minnesota Territory takes them by riverboat, steam wagon, Great Lakes steamship, and oxcart to Chisago County.

Title: The Wind in the Rose-Bush: And Other Supernatural Stories Author: Mary Wilkins Narrator: John Rayburn Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 4 hours 21 minutes Release date: April 9, 2024 Genres: Classics Publisher's Summary: Ford Village has no railroad station, being on the other side of the river from Porter’s Falls, and accessible only by the ford which gives it its name, and a ferry line. The ferry-boat was waiting when Rebecca Flint got off the train with her bag and lunch basket. When she and her small trunk were safely embarked she sat stiff and straight and calm in the ferry-boat as it shot swiftly and smoothly across stream. There was a horse attached to a light country wagon on board, and he pawed the deck uneasily. His owner stood near, with a wary eye upon him, although he was chewing, with as dully reflective an expression as a cow. Beside Rebecca sat a woman of about her own age, who kept looking at her with furtive curiosity; her husband, short and stout and saturnine, stood near her. Rebecca paid no attention to either of them. She was tall and spare and pale, the type of a spinster, yet with rudimentary lines and expressions of matronhood. She all unconsciously held her shawl, rolled up in a canvas bag, on her left hip, as if it had been a child. She wore a settled frown of dissent at life, but it was the frown of a mother who regarded life as a forward child, rather than as an overwhelming fate. Listen and enjoy.

Unique Selections: Twelve Sci-Fi Classic Stories by H.G. Wells
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/763266 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Unique Selections: Twelve Sci-Fi Classic Stories Author: H.G. Wells Narrator: John Rayburn Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 7 hours 23 minutes Release date: April 2, 2024 Genres: Classics Publisher's Summary: In truth the mastery of flying was the work of thousands of men—this man a suggestion and that an experiment, until at last only one vigorous intellectual effort was needed to finish the work. But the inexorable injustice of the popular mind has decided that of all these thousands, one man, and that a man who never flew, should be chosen as the discoverer, just as it has chosen to honor Watt as the discoverer of steam and Stephenson of the steam-engine. And surely of all honored names none is so grotesquely and tragically honored as poor Filmer’s, the timid, intellectual creature who solved the problem over which the world had hung perplexed and a little fearful for so many generations, the man who pressed the button that has changed peace and warfare and well-nigh every condition of human life and happiness. Never has that recurring wonder of the littleness of the scientific man in the face of the greatness of his science found such an amazing exemplification. Much concerning Filmer is, and must remain, profoundly obscure—Filmers attract no Boswells—but the essential facts and the concluding scene are clear enough, and there are letters, and notes, and casual allusions to piece the whole together. And this is the story one makes, putting this thing with that of Filmer’s life and death.

This novel is inspired by an actual event. Adolf Verloc is a secret agent who provides information and takes care of arriving undercover agents of an un-named government through their embassy. He also runs a shady business selling pornography, comic books, contraceptives, and the like. As well as this, he’s a confidential informant to Chief Inspector Heat of the London police. His family consists of his wife, Winnie, her Mother, and his (presumably) autistic brother-in-law, Stevie. His circle of friends is a group of anarchists (Ossipon, Yundt, Michaelis, and explosives expert, “The Professor”). They are known to the police and are kept under observation by them. For the most part, they publish anarchist literature, mainly “The FP” which stands for “The Future of the Proletariat'. When a bombing occurs at the Greenwich Observatory, it goes wrong, and the bomber is blown to pieces. Chief Inspector Heat and the Assistant Commissioner are called upon to investigate. They begin their inquiries with the usual Anarchist suspects. Conrad writes this tale with amazing fluidity and use of the English language. His psychological style, cleverness of plot, and storytelling are rarely surpassed in English Literature. The effect he achieves is surprisingly cinematic.

Yet so swiftly has the hand of civilization wiped out the old traditions and customs, that but few Indians remain who remember them, and fewer still are those willing to divulge them. Only when one comes into intimate contact with them is one accorded the privilege and honor of hearing the tales of their ancestors. And it is through the friendship of some of the old-type Indians, that the author has been allowed a glimpse of the inner shrine of their lives. Cuyamaca is evidently a Spanish corruption of the Indian words Ah-ha’ Kwe-ah-mac’ (Water Beyond), a name used by the Indians, first to designate a location high on the middle mountain, but afterward applied to the entire group. These mountains had distinctive names also. The one farthest north, they called E-yee’ (Nest), because they believed that a big nest or den was on one of its slopes in which the wild animals disappeared when hunted, thus safely evading pursuit. The middle one, Hal-kwo-kwilsh’ (Tough Strong), gained this title in the battle of the peaks when he proved very formidable. The one known as the Cuyamaca Peak, acquired the name of Poo-kwoo-sqwee’ (Crooked Neck), in the same battle. And before the battle still another peak, Hilsh Ki’e (Pine Tree), belonged to the group, so the Indians say, but now lives far away. Pronunciation:The Indians accent their words strongly and enunciate with their teeth very nearly closed, which gives their language a rhythmical cadence quite pleasing to the ear. Dusty Tomes Audio Books are public domain books retrieved from history. If today’s technology had been available when first printed, they would be audio books already. I am grateful for the opportunity to record them now. Read online at archive.org and Hathitrust.org. Narrator’s note: I read only as written. These old books were once solid sellers for bookmen of their time. I believe they can shed light on their times and ours. Loving obscure and remote literature, they are a distinct pleasure for me to read to you. These turn out to be distant and unknown only so long as they remain unread, or unheard. Aloha.

[Spanish] - Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/765023 to listen full audiobooks. Title: [Spanish] - Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer Author: Mark Twain Narrator: Alberto Santillán Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 7 hours 42 minutes Release date: March 28, 2024 Genres: Classics Publisher's Summary: Una obra maestra de la literatura universal que fascina a generaciones de lectores.
