The Money Formula by Paul Wilmott | Free Audiobook
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: The Money Formula Author: Paul Wilmott, David Orrell Narrator: Gavin Osborn Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 46 mins Language: English Release date: 01-11-18 Publisher: Audible Studios Genres: Nonfiction, Economics Summary: Explore the deadly elegance of finance's hidden powerhouse The Money Formula takes you inside the engine room of the global economy to explore the little-understood world of quantitative finance, and show how the future of our economy rests on the backs of this all-but-impenetrable industry. Written not from a post-crisis perspective - but from a preventative point of view - this book traces the development of financial derivatives from bonds to credit default swaps, and shows how mathematical formulas went beyond pricing to expand their use to the point where they dwarfed the real economy. You'll learn how the deadly allure of their ice-cold beauty has misled generations of economists and investors, and how continued reliance on these formulas can either assist future economic development, or send the global economy into the financial equivalent of a cardiac arrest. Rather than rehash tales of post-crisis fallout, this book focuses on preventing the next one. By exploring the heart of the shadow economy, you'll be better prepared to ride the rough waves of finance into the turbulent future. How do you create a quadrillion dollars out of nothing, blow it away, and leave a hole so large that even years of "quantitative easing" can't fill it - and then go back to doing the same thing? Even amidst global recovery, the financial system still has the potential to seize up at any moment. The Money Formula explores the how and why of financial disaster, what must happen to prevent the next one. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com

Applied Economics by Thomas Sowell | Free Audiobook
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: Applied Economics Author: Thomas Sowell Narrator: Brian Emerson Format: Unabridged Length: 7 hrs and 47 mins Language: English Release date: 01-02-18 Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc. Genres: Nonfiction, Economics Summary: This book is geared to the average citizen with little or no economics background who would like the tools to think critically about economic issues. Many of today's economic issues are obscured by their inherent complexity and the often confusing and conflicting views coming from political talking heads. Sowell, a leading conservative economist and senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, seeks to alleviate this confusion. He begins by elucidating the differences between politicians, who are often compelled by political considerations to act for the short term, and economists, who are more concerned with long-term ramifications. Sowell then focuses on the application of economics to major contemporary real-world problems - housing, medical care, discrimination, and the economic development of nations. The Innovation Illusion by Fredrik Erixon | Free Audiobook
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: The Innovation Illusion Author: Fredrik Erixon, Bjorn Weigel Narrator: Adam Verner Format: Unabridged Length: 11 hrs and 41 mins Language: English Release date: 12-20-17 Publisher: Vibrance Press Genres: Nonfiction, Economics Summary: Timely, compelling, and certain to be controversial - a deeply researched study that reveals how companies and policymakers are hindering innovation-led growth Conventional wisdom holds that Western economies are on the threshold of fast-and-furious technological development. Fredrik Erixon and Bjorn Weigel refute this idea, bringing together a vast array of data and case studies to tell a very different story. With expertise spanning academia and the business world, Erixon and Weigel illustrate how innovation is being hampered by existing government regulations and corporate practices. Capitalism, they argue, has lost its mojo. Assessing the experiences of global companies, including Nokia, Uber, IBM, and Apple, the authors explore three key themes: declining economic dynamism in Western economies; growing corporate reluctance to contest markets and innovate; and excessive regulation limiting the diffusion of innovation. At a time of low growth, high unemployment, and increasing income inequality, innovation-led growth is more necessary than ever. This book unequivocally details the obstacles hindering our future prosperity. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com

Capitalism Without Capital by Jonathan Haskel | Free Audiobook
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: Capitalism Without Capital Author: Jonathan Haskel, Stian Westlake Narrator: Derek Perkins Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 56 mins Language: English Release date: 12-15-17 Publisher: Recorded Books Genres: Nonfiction, Economics Summary: The first comprehensive account of the growing dominance of the intangible economy Early in the 21st century, a quiet revolution occurred. For the first time, the major developed economies began to invest more in intangible assets, like design, branding, R&D, or software, than in tangible assets, like machinery, buildings, and computers. For all sorts of businesses, from tech firms and pharma companies to coffee shops and gyms, the ability to deploy assets that one can neither see nor touch is increasingly the main source of long-term success. But this is not just a familiar story of the so-called new economy. Capitalism without Capital shows that the growing importance of intangible assets has also played a role in some of the big economic changes of the last decade. The rise of intangible investment is, Jonathan Haskel and Stian Westlake argue, an underappreciated cause of phenomena from economic inequality to stagnating productivity. Haskel and Westlake bring together a decade of research on how to measure intangible investment and its impact on national accounts, showing the amount different countries invest in intangibles, how this has changed over time, and the latest thinking on how to assess this. They explore the unusual economic characteristics of intangible investment and discuss how these features make an intangible-rich economy fundamentally different from one based on tangibles. Capitalism without Capital concludes by presenting three possible scenarios for what the future of an intangible world might be like and by outlining how managers, investors, and policymakers can exploit the characteristics of an intangible age to grow their businesses, portfolios, and economies. Author bio: Jonathan Haskel is professor of economics at Imperial College London. Stian Westlake is a senior fellow at Nesta, the UK's national foundation for innovation. How to Kill a City by Peter Moskowitz | Free Audiobook
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: How to Kill a City Author: Peter Moskowitz Narrator: Kevin T. Collins Format: Unabridged Length: 9 hrs and 22 mins Language: English Release date: 12-05-17 Publisher: Tantor Audio Genres: Nonfiction, Economics Summary: The term gentrification has become a buzzword to describe the changes in urban neighborhoods across the country, but we don't realize just how threatening it is. It means more than the arrival of trendy shops, much-maligned hipsters, and expensive lattes. The very future of American cities as vibrant, equitable spaces hangs in the balance. Peter Moskowitz's How to Kill a City takes listeners from the kitchen tables of hurting families who can no longer afford their homes to the corporate boardrooms and political backrooms where destructive housing policies are devised. Along the way, Moskowitz uncovers the massive, systemic forces behind gentrification in New Orleans, Detroit, San Francisco, and New York. The deceptively simple question of who can and cannot afford to pay the rent goes to the heart of America's crises of race and inequality. In the fight for economic opportunity and racial justice, nothing could be more important than housing. A vigorous, hard-hitting expose, How to Kill a City reveals who holds power in our cities - and how we can get it back. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com

Lentil Underground by Liz Carlisle | Free Audiobook
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: Lentil Underground Author: Liz Carlisle Narrator: Tavia Gilbert Format: Unabridged Length: 7 hrs and 23 mins Language: English Release date: 11-21-17 Publisher: Tantor Audio Genres: Nonfiction, Economics Summary: The story of the "Lentil Underground" begins on a 280-acre homestead rooted in America's Great Plains: the Oien family farm. Forty years ago, corporate agribusiness told small farmers like the Oiens to "get big or get out." But 27-year-old David Oien decided to take a stand, becoming the first in his conservative Montana county to plant a radically different crop: organic lentils. Unlike the chemically dependent grains American farmers had been told to grow, lentils make their own fertilizer and tolerate variable climate conditions, so their farmers aren't beholden to industrial methods. Today, Oien leads an underground network of organic farmers who work with heirloom seeds and biologically diverse farm systems. Under the brand Timeless Natural Food, their unique business-cum-movement has grown into a million dollar enterprise that sells to Whole Foods, hundreds of independent natural foods stores, and a host of renowned restaurants. From the heart of Big Sky Country comes this inspiring story of a handful of colorful pioneers who have successfully bucked the chemically based food chain and the entrenched power of agribusiness's one percent. Journalist Liz Carlisle weaves an eye-opening and richly reported narrative that will be welcomed by everyone concerned with the future of American agriculture. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com

The Next Factory of the World by Irene Yuan Sun | Free Audiobook
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: The Next Factory of the World Author: Irene Yuan Sun Narrator: Nancy Wu Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 26 mins Language: English Release date: 11-09-17 Publisher: Recorded Books Genres: Nonfiction, Economics Summary: Will Africa be the world's next hub of manufacturing? China is answering in the affirmative and investing accordingly. This book dispels the notion that this crucial story is merely about China's exploitation of Africa's resources, illuminating deep questions about our own Western approach to development and the implications for the future of manufacturing. China is now the biggest foreign player in Africa: largest trade partner, largest infrastructure financier, and fastest-growing source of foreign direct investment. Chinese entrepreneurs are flooding into Africa, investing in long-term assets, such as factories and heavy equipment. The fact that China sees Africa not for its poverty but for its potential wealth is a striking departure from the attitude of the West, in particular the United States. For 50 years the West has engaged in countless poverty-alleviation and development-aid programs in Africa, yet Africa still has the largest number of people living in extreme poverty of any region in the world. Considering Africa's difficult history of colonialism, one might suspect that the current story of China in Africa is merely a story about exploitation of resources. Author Irene Yuan Sun follows these entrepreneurs and finds instead that they are factory owners, building in Africa what they so recently learned to build in China - a global manufacturing powerhouse. This gives rise to a tantalizing possibility: that Africa can industrialize in the coming generation. With a manufacturing-led transformation, Africa would be following in the footsteps of the United States in the 19th century, Japan in the early 20th, and the Asian Tigers in the late 20th century. Many may consider this an old-fashioned way to develop, but it's the only one that's proven to raise living standards across entire societies for generations. And with every new Chinese factory boss setting up machinery and hiring African workers, that possibility becomes more real for Africa. With fascinating stories of entrepreneurs, workers, and government officials in Africa, along with incisive business and economic analysis, The Next Factory of the World will make you rethink both China's role in the world and Africa's future in the globalized economy. The Retreat of Western Liberalism by Edward Luce | Free Audiobook
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: The Retreat of Western Liberalism Author: Edward Luce Narrator: Julian Elfer Format: Unabridged Length: 5 hrs and 3 mins Language: English Release date: 11-02-17 Publisher: Hachette Audio Genres: Nonfiction, Economics Summary: In his widely acclaimed book Time to Start Thinking, Financial Times columnist and commentator Edward Luce charted the course of American economic and geopolitical decline, proving to be a prescient voice on our current social and political turmoil. In The Retreat of Western Liberalism, Luce makes a larger statement about the weakening of western hegemony and the crisis of democratic liberalism - of which Donald Trump and his European counterparts are not the cause, but a symptom. Luce argues that we are on a menacing trajectory brought about by ignorance of what it took to build the West, arrogance towards society's losers, and complacency about our system's durability - attitudes that have been emerging since the fall of the Berlin Wall, treated by the West as an absolute triumph over the East. We cannot move forward without a clear diagnosis of what has gone wrong. Luce contrasts Western democratic and economic ideals, which rest on an assumption of linear progress, with more cyclical views of economic strength - symbolized by the 19th-century fall and present-day rise of the Chinese and Indian economies - and with the dawn of a new multipolar age. Combining on-the-ground reporting with intelligent synthesis of the vast literature already available, Luce offers a detailed projection of the consequences of the Trump administration and a forward-thinking analysis of what those who believe in enlightenment values must do to defend them from the multiple onslaughts they face in the coming years. How We Can Win by Anthony Lacavera | Free Audiobook
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: How We Can Win Author: Anthony Lacavera, Kate Fillion Narrator: John Cleland Format: Unabridged Length: 7 hrs and 39 mins Language: English Release date: 11-01-17 Publisher: Penguin Random House Canada Genres: Nonfiction, Economics Summary: Our kids are smart, our banks are sound, our health care system is humane, our democracy is stable - but technological change is about to disrupt our economy and threaten our way of life. Canadians aren't ready for the race to the future. Can we still catch up - or even win? Yes, says Anthony Lacavera, one of Canada's most successful entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. But we need to change the way we think and talk about our own abilities - dream bigger, aim higher, and go for gold, not bronze. We also need to change the way we do business. Our dominant business culture, Lacavera believes, is fundamentally unCanadian: traditional, backward-looking, insular, timid, greedy, unoriginal - everything that Canadians themselves are not. And that unCanadian business culture, protected by outmoded regulations and government policies, is stifling our economic growth. It dumps roadblocks in the paths of entrepreneurs who want to build the kind of powerhouse businesses that will create jobs and fuel our economy. Anthony Lacavera faced those roadblocks himself when he was building WIND - an epic battle against the big three telecommunications giants in Canada. But he's certain we have the talent and the brains to tear those roadblocks down. He gives us vivid portraits of some of Canada's most important natural resources: our talented, innovative entrepreneurs, who want to change the world for the better (and, yes, make money while they're at it). But we are shipping far too many of them to the United States, gift-wrapped in our tax dollars. They don't want to leave - they're forced out because it's just too difficult to build big, bold businesses in Canada. How We Can Win explains what we need to do to keep them here and what all Canadians must do to ensure our future prosperity. Our biggest problem is not that we are a small country but that we think too small. We can be a nation of big dreamers and bigger doers. Not by aping Silicon Valley but by focusing on uniquely Canadian strengths and then doubling down on them. If we bet aggressively on ourselves and our future rather than clinging to the status quo, we will create a new, more solid economic foundation - one that allows us to win the race to the future without leaving home. Combining insider's knowledge with principles of network science, Sandra Navidi offers a startling new perspective on how superhubs build their powerful networks and how their decisions impact all our lives. $uperhubs reveals what happens at the exclusive, invitation-only platforms - the World Economic Forum in Davos, the meetings of the International Monetary Fund, think-tank gatherings, and exclusive galas. This is the most vivid portrait to date of the global elite: the bank CEOs, fund managers, billionaire financiers, and politicians who, through their interlocking relationships and collective influence are transforming our increasingly fragile financial system, economy, and society. The Know-It-Alls by Noam Cohen | Free Audiobook
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: The Know-It-Alls Author: Noam Cohen Narrator: Adam Grupper Format: Unabridged Length: 9 hrs and 2 mins Language: English Release date: 10-24-17 Publisher: HighBridge, a division of Recorded Books Genres: Nonfiction, Economics Summary: Beginning nearly a century ago and showcasing the role of Stanford University as the incubator of this new class of super geeks, Cohen shows how smart guys like Jeff Bezos, Peter Thiel, Sergey Brin, Larry Page, and Mark Zuckerberg fell in love with a radically individualistic ideal and then mainstreamed it. With these very rich men leading the way, unions, libraries, public schools, common courtesy, and even government itself have been pushed aside to make way for supposedly efficient market-based encounters via the Internet. Donald Trump's election victory was an inadvertent triumph of the "disruption" that Silicon Valley has been pushing: Facebook and Twitter, eager to entertain their users, turned a blind eye to the fake news and the hateful ideas proliferating there. The Rust Belt states that shifted to Trump are the ones being left behind by a "meritocratic" Silicon Valley ideology that promotes an economy where, in the words of LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, each of us is our own start-up. A society that belittles civility, empathy, and collaboration can easily be led astray. The Know-It-Alls explains how these self-proclaimed geniuses failed this most important test of democracy. The Absent Superpower by Peter Zeihan | Free Audiobook
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: The Absent Superpower Author: Peter Zeihan Narrator: Toby Sheets Format: Unabridged Length: 13 hrs and 44 mins Language: English Release date: 10-11-17 Publisher: Zeihan on Geopolitics Genres: Nonfiction, Economics Summary: The world is changing in ways most of us find incomprehensible. Terrorism spills out of the Middle East into Europe. Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, China, and Japan vie to see who can be most aggressive. Financial breakdown in Asia and Europe guts growth, challenging hard-won political stability. Yet, for the Americans, these changes are fantastic. Alone among the world's powers, only the United States is geographically wealthy, demographically robust, and energy secure. That last piece - American energy security - is rapidly emerging as the most critical piece of the global picture. The American shale revolution does more than sever the largest of the remaining ties that bind America's fate to the wider world. It re-industrializes the United States, accelerates the global order's breakdown, and triggers a series of wide ranging military conflicts that will shape the next two decades. The common theme? Just as the global economy tips into chaos, just as global energy becomes dangerous, just as the world really needs the Americans to be engaged, the United States will be...absent. In 2014's The Accidental Superpower, geopolitical strategist Peter Zeihan made the case that geographic, demographic, and energy trends were unravelling the global system. Zeihan takes the story a step further in The Absent Superpower, mapping out the threats and opportunities as the world descends into disorder. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com

Dream Hoarders by Richard V. Reeves | Free Audiobook
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: Dream Hoarders Author: Richard V. Reeves Narrator: Richard V. Reeves Format: Unabridged Length: 4 hrs and 40 mins Language: English Release date: 10-03-17 Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc. Genres: Nonfiction, Economics Summary: America is becoming a class-based society. It is now conventional to focus on the wealth of the top 1 percent - especially the top 0.01 percent - and how the ultra-rich are concentrating income and prosperity while incomes for most other Americans are stagnant. But the most important, consequential, and widening gap in American society is between the upper middle class and everyone else. Reeves defines the upper middle class as those whose incomes are in the top 20 percent of American society. Income is not the only way to measure a society, but in a market economy it is crucial because access to money generally determines who gets the best quality education, housing, health care, and other necessary goods and services. As Reeves shows, the growing separation between the upper middle class and everyone else can be seen in family structure, neighborhoods, attitudes, and lifestyle. Those at the top of the income ladder are becoming more effective at passing on their status to their children, reducing overall social mobility. The result is not just an economic divide but a fracturing of American society along class lines. Upper-middle-class children become upper-middle-class adults. These trends matter because the separation and perpetuation of the upper middle class corrode prospects for more progressive approaches to policy. Various forms of "opportunity hoarding" among the upper-middle class make it harder for others to rise to the top rung. Examples include zoning laws and schooling, occupational licensing, college application procedures, and the allocation of internships. Upper-middle-class opportunity hoarding, Reeves argues, results in a less competitive economy as well as a less open society. Inequality is inevitable and can even be good, within limits. But Reeves argues that society can take effective action to reduce opportunity hoarding and thus promote broader opportunity. This fascinating book shows how American society has become the very class-defined society that earlier Americans rebelled against - and what can be done to restore a more equitable society.
