The Duke of Richmond’s office asked for his Grace to be taken from the House to the Circuit and I managed to persuade them to make an hour-sized gap in his diary (no mean feat). Putting aside the fact a lorry nearly took the entire side of the Rolls-Royce out, the Goodwood ‘Chauffeur’ series got off to a flying start.
During our tour through Midhurst, Rogate and South Harting his Grace spoke to me about the time he was told to “p*ss off” by Graham Hill, the future of Goodwood and the birth of the Festival of Speed. We even found time to play a game of Word Association.
