Haemodialysis (HD) requires safe and effective anticoagulation to prevent clot formation within the extracorporeal circuit during dialysis treatments to enable adequate dialysis and minimise adverse events, including major bleeding. Fatigue is a common and debilitating symptom amongst people with kidney failure but remains under appreciated and understudied. Interventions to address fatigue in people with kidney failure requiring dialysis are lacking, highlighted by the lack of recommendations on managing fatigue in clinical practice guidelines. A Cochrane review was published in 2023 summarizing the benefits and harms of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for fatigue in people on dialysis. On this podcast, the review’s first author Dr Patrizia Natale joins us to discuss the study’s findings.

The developing countries of sub-Saharan Africa are under threat by an emerging epidemic of kidney disease. Populations are no longer solely affected by ‘diseases of poverty’ such as HIV/TB/malaria but also ‘diseases of affluence’ such as diabetes and hypertension. Disease is often asymptomatic until end-stage disease develops requiring expensive treatment options such as transplant or dialysis.
