Global History of Peru
Episode 12: The wars between Pizarrists and Almagrists (1537-1542)
Finally, the conquistadors decide to kill each other. Or something like that happened. The point is that Francisco Pizarro and Diego de Almagro are dead. Dead, rigid, finito.   Enjoy the episode.   Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Historiaperuanaparacuriosos . Feel free to contact me at  cuandosejodio@gmail.com if you have any questions or comments. Only after editing did I realize that I recorded the introduction with the laptop's standard microphone. So the audio improves (thanks to the new microphone) around the 01:00 mark.

Rethinking Zapotec Time: An interview with Dr. David Tavárez
For this month's episode I interviewed Professor David Tavárez about his award-winning book Rethinking Zapotec Time: Cosmology, Ritual, and Resistance in Colonial Mexico. This study presents the first full translation and analysis of a series of Zapotec divinatory calendars that were confiscated by colonial authorities at the beginning of the 18th century. We spoke about indigenous theology, the history of the Zapotec languages, and more.   Enjoy it.   Link to David's book: https://utpress.utexas.edu/9781477324516/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Historiaperuanaparacuriosos . Inca archaeology and history: An interview with Dr. R. Alan Covey
For this month's episode I interviewed Professor R. Alan Covey about Inca history and archaeology. We touch on many topics I explained in the previous episode, though this time more extensively. I had a lot of fun with this one (despite having a cold), and I hope you will as well.  Enjoy it.   Link to Alan's book "Inca Apocalypse. Episode 3: The Incas
Here is the much awaited episode on Inca history!   The Inca empire began to form around 1200 AD and reached its greatest expansion in 1532. By this time, the Inca rulers claimed territories in Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and even Ecuador and Colombia as their own. On this occasion I talked about their socio-political organization, in such a way that the events that occurred after the encounter with the Conquistadors are understandable. I also explained what historical sources we count on and commented on the trends in recent research literature.   Enjoy the episode.   You can find the episode's bibliography on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Historiaperuanaparacuriosos . Feel free to contact me at  cuandosejodio@gmail.com if you have any questions or comments.   Corrections:  Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa’s book was published in 1572, not in 1568.  When I spoke of the Inca foundational myth, I mistakenly referred to the lake Titicaca region. I meant to say Pacaritambo and Huanacaure. These two archaeological sites are considerably more recent than said narrative’s timeline.

Genoa and the Spanish empire: The Genoese republic and Iberian Genoese merchant communities
The Spanish empire was not solely built by Castilian and Aragonese people. This doesn't solely apply to the consolidation of royal authority in the Americas, as I explained in our last episode. Genoese merchants and financiers, as well as the republic of Genoa, were key participants in this early modern empire, and the presence of Genoese merchants in the Iberian peninsula even dates back to the Late Middle Ages. So I decided to dedicate an interview to their history. For this episode I interviewed Dr. Richard Ibarra, to whom I'm very thankful. He wrote his Ph.D. thesis on Genoese merchants in Seville and the Spanish Atlantic (1450-1650). Racialization in the Iberian Peninsula and in the Spanish Empire: The cases of Castile and New Spain (mostly Mexico)
For this episode I reviewed María Elena Martínez’ Genealogical Fictions: Limpieza de Sangre, Religion, and Gender in Colonial Mexico as a starting point to discuss racialization in the Spanish Empire. More concretely, I explain a couple of key points regarding limpieza de sangre (blood purity) statutes and the colonial caste system. The conclusion consists of a couple of open questions – It’s an invitation for you to reflect on the topics of the episode by yourself! P.S.: In minute 19, I said the colonization of the Americas wasn’t state-led. This isn’t exactly false, but what I meant was that the conquest wasn’t state-led.

Episode 1: Notes on Spanish history before 1532
In this episode I discuss some of the most relevant aspects of medieval and early modern Spanish history. We focus on the Christian side of the peninsula and cover the infamous Reconquest, royal authority and state formation, the conquest of the Canary Islands, and more. Luka First P.S.: I added the background music because a friend of mine explained to me it could be helpful for people with ADHD.  Second P.S.: Don't forget to check out the bibliography on our website!
