The novel explores themes of ambition, scientific ethics, and the consequences of playing god, as the two become entangled in a destructive cycle.

We are introduced to Robert Walton, a young captain exploring the wilderness of the North Pole. While writing letters to his sister Margaret, he encounters an almost frozen to death man: the doctor Victor Frankenstein.
