First World War: 1918 by Sarah Kilgarriff | Free Audiobook
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: First World War: 1918 Author: Sarah Kilgarriff Narrator: Jonathan Keeble Format: Original Recording Length: 2 hrs and 11 mins Language: English Release date: 01-25-18 Publisher: BBC Digital Audio Genres: History, World Summary: A unique collection of historic recordings in which the last brutal encounters of the war and the mixed emotions of the armistice are remembered by troops from both sides. By the end of March 1918, Germany's Spring Offensive had thrown British forces back over the old Somme battlefields. But this last push failed, and with the stalemate of trench warfare broken, the Allies swept from near defeat to victory. However, their joy was tempered by sorrow. Too many would not come home. For the Germans, the mood was despairing as their 'endless columns rolled eastward', the November fog and rain adding to their melancholy. Memorable reminiscences include an evocative portrait of poet Wilfred Owen, killed shortly before the armistice; American troops on their initiation into the horrors of battle; and reflections on the 'punitive' demands of the Paris Peace Conference. As the Treaty of Versailles was being drafted, the German navy decided its own fate in one final act of defiance, witnessed by a group of schoolchildren on an outing in Scapa Flow. These enduring recollections from the men who fought and the women who waited are a poignant and powerful reminder of the shocking realities of the war. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com

The Berlin Airlift by Barry Turner | Free Audiobook
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: The Berlin Airlift Author: Barry Turner Narrator: Peter Baker Format: Unabridged Length: 9 hrs and 5 mins Language: English Release date: 01-11-18 Publisher: Audible Studios Genres: History, World Summary: Acclaimed historian Barry Turner presents a new history of the Cold War's defining episode. Berlin, 1948: a divided city in a divided country in a divided Europe. The ruined German capital lay 120 miles inside Soviet-controlled Eastern Germany. Stalin wanted the Allies out; the Allies were determined to stay but had only three narrow air corridors linking the city to the West. Stalin was confident he could crush Berlin's resolve by cutting off food and fuel. In the USA, despite some voices still urging 'America first', it was believed that a rebuilt Germany was the best insurance against the spread of communism across Europe. And so over 11 months, from June 1948 to May 1949, British and American aircraft carried out the most ambitious airborne relief operation ever mounted, flying over two million tons of supplies on almost 300,000 flights to save a beleaguered Berlin. With new material from American, British and German archives and original interviews with veterans, Turner paints a fresh, vivid picture of the airlift, whose repercussions - the role of the USA as global leader, German ascendancy and Russian threat - we are still living with today. Frida Kahlo by Edward Lucie-Smith | Free Audiobook
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: Frida Kahlo Author: Edward Lucie-Smith Narrator: Willis Miller Format: Unabridged Length: 7 mins Language: English Release date: 12-22-17 Publisher: Cv Publications Genres: History, World Summary: Going to the Frida Kahlo exhibition current at Tate Modern in London is like entering the shrine of a secular saint. The rooms are thronged. People peer closely at the paintings, many of them very small. They seem afraid to talk much above a whisper. There are a number of reasons for this reaction. One is Hayden Herreras highly readable biography of the artist, first published in 1983, and now established as a classic feminist text. Another is the feminist movements general need for heroines, which has had a similar effect on the posthumous reputation of Georgia OKeeffe. A third, probably the most powerful, reason is Kahlos own personality, which combined self-assertion, defiance and masochism in almost equal proportions. In this respect Kahlo can be compared with a slightly later generation of English-language poets, male and female. Prominent among them are Robert Lowell, John Berryman, Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton. From the preface: Now that the prejudices and bitter partisan feeling of the past are subsiding, it seems a fitting time to record the facts and incidents connected with the first conflict of the Rebellion. Before the hastening years shall have partially obliterated many circumstances from my memory, and while there is still an opportunity for conference and friendly criticism, I desire to make, from letters, memoranda, and documents in my possession, a statement which will embody my own recollections of the turbulent days of 1860 and 1861. I know how difficult it is to write contemporaneous history, or even to give a bare detail of facts, without wounding the susceptibilities of others; but whenever I have felt called upon to give my own opinion, I have endeavored to do so in the spirit of Lincoln's immortal sentiment - "With malice toward none; with charity for all." Artist Bio Author: Abner Doubleday (1819-1893) was a career United States Army officer and Union general in the American Civil War, fighting from Fort Sumter to Gettysburg. ©2017 Audioliterature (P)2017 Audioliterature Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com

The Korean Demilitarized Zone by Charles River Editors | Free Audiobook
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: The Korean Demilitarized Zone Author: Charles River Editors Narrator: Dan Gallagher Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 37 mins Language: English Release date: 12-07-17 Publisher: Charles River Editors Genres: History, World Summary: The Korean War was a watershed event for a number of reasons. Not only was it considered the first military action of the Cold War, as well as one of the first to utilize jet planes kitted out with bombs and missiles, the United Nations immersed itself in the precarious politics of warfare for the very first time. A total of 41 countries gifted shiploads of provisions and equipment to South Korea. Another 16 countries provided their own soldiers to serve as backup for the South Koreans. Their mission, put simply, was to extinguish Communism on the Korean peninsula once and for all. After a series of heated but unproductive negotiations that lasted two brutal years and 17 miserable days, North Korea and South Korea found themselves locked in a stalemate. Finally, on July 27, 1953, representatives from both parties gathered at the village of Panmunjom, located on a semi-neutral zone by the border. Here, they devised a document entitled the Korean Armistice Agreement and scrawled their names across the bottom of the parchment, calling for a ceasefire, effective immediately. In essence, this agreement was no more than a truce, for there were no victors. The agreement merely ensured "a suspension of open hostilities," a "transfer of POWs," and lastly, the formal establishment of the demilitarization zone, better known as the DMZ. To this day, no peace treaty has ever been signed. Despite the fact the border between North Korea and South Korea remains tense, and former President Bill Clinton once branded it the "scariest place on Earth," more than 7.5 million tourists have visited the notorious demilitarized zone for one reason or another. There, they gazed upon a treacherous but evidently intriguing strip of land, guarded by estranged brothers with a chilling array of weapons directed at one another at all times. The Korean Demilitarized Zone: The History and Legacy of the Border Between North Korea and South Korea examines one of the most dangerous locations on the planet. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com

The Saboteur by Paul Kix | Free Audiobook
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: The Saboteur Author: Paul Kix Narrator: Malcolm Hillgartner Format: Unabridged Length: 7 hrs and 13 mins Language: English Release date: 12-05-17 Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited Genres: History, World Summary: In the tradition of 'Agent Zigzag' comes a breathtaking biography of WWII's 'Scarlet Pimpernel' as fast-paced and emotionally intuitive as the best spy thrillers. This celebrates unsung hero Robert de La Rochefoucauld, an aristocrat turned anti-Nazi saboteur, and his exploits as a British Special Operations Executive-trained resistance fighter. A scion of one of the most aristocratic families in France, Robert de La Rochefoucauld was raised in magnificent chateaux and educated in Europe's finest schools. When the Nazis invaded and imprisoned his father, La Rochefoucauld escaped to England and learned the dark arts of anarchy and combat - cracking safes, planting bombs and killing with his bare hands - from the officers of Special Operations Executive, the collection of British spies beloved by Winston Churchill who altered the war in Europe with tactics that earned it notoriety as the 'Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare'. With his newfound skills, La Rochefoucauld returned to France and organised resistance cells, blew up fortified compounds and munitions factories, interfered with Germans' wartime missions and executed Nazi officers. Caught by the Germans, La Rochefoucauld withstood months of torture without cracking and escaped his own death not once but twice. The Saboteur recounts La Rochefoucauld's enthralling adventures, from jumping from a moving truck on his way to his execution to stealing Nazi limos to dressing up in a nun's habit - one of his many disguises and impersonations. Whatever the mission, whatever the dire circumstance, de La Rochefoucauld acquitted himself nobly, with the straight-back aplomb of a man of aristocratic breeding: James Bond before Ian Fleming conjured him. More than just a fast-paced, true thriller, The Saboteur is also a deep dive into an endlessly fascinating historical moment, telling the untold story of a network of commandos that battled evil, bravely working to change the course of history. No man no problem." (Joseph Stalin) Worshipped by the Russians as a great leader, Stalin was one of modern history's greatest tyrants, rivalling Hitler, Mao Zedong and Pol Pot. But he probably had more blood on his hands than any of them. Born Josef Dzhugashvili in Gori, Georgia in 1879, Stalin studied to be a priest while secretly reading the works of Karl Marx. Politics soon became his religion and, under his ruthless rule, up to 60 million people perished. Peasants who resisted Stalin's policy of collectivisation were denounced as Kulaks, arrested and shot, exiled or worked to death in his ever-expanding network of concentration camps, the Gulag. Nobody was safe, not even his friends, his family or his political allies. This is the story of a man who never let up for a second in his pursuit of absolute power. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com
