Remember mix tapes? In this podcast I run through a series of mix CDs I made for my son over the last few years to introduce him to an artist's back catalogue. Avoiding the obvious hits (mostly) and including some favourite deeper cuts. We chat and find our what he liked and didn't like.

Generation Mix Episode 46 - Status Quo
Wow - it's been a long time coming.  6 months in fact since U2 graced your ears.  We recorded this in November but only got round to recording the end musical clue yesterday as we'd been arguing about whether it's a normal episode or turnaround...   Anyway, this episode dives into the three chords wonders themselves - Status Quo. One of the biggest and best bands of the 70s.  At least until they went south in the latter end of the decade and never really recovered credibility.   Joel gets a revenge and it's.... alright! Generation Mix Episode 45 - U2
We're back!  It's been a long old wait - but for the best of reasons.  Joel has been taking his GCSEs.  That's all over now and what better way to celebrate than to listen to a somewhat polarising band - U2. Together as a band for over 45 years with no line changes or departures ever - U2 can lay claim to the Pride of being the most stable band in rock history. This is a trawl through their career up to the controversial Songs Of Innocence and that particular i-Tunes shaped can of worms does get talked about but do we get stuck in a moment we can't get out of? Joel has his revenge and there is a shock involved! My YouTube channel: Pockenrop

Generation Mix Episode 44 - Genesis and Solo
In this episode Joel and Neil listen to the music of Genesis and solo tracks from Phil Collins, Mike and the Mechanics and Peter Gabriel. Genesis aren't exactly a favourite of Neil - the greatest hits are OK and maybe an album or two.  Peter Gabriel, however... Joel gets his usual revenge and it's.... fine! Generation Mix Role Reversal 1 - Demi Lovato Redo
It's the first of the occasional bonus series of Generation Mix: Role Reversal, where Joel gets to introduce Dad to an entire CD of one of his favourite artists.  This time it's Demi Lovato. There are tracks from her entire career and, in Dad's opinion, something of a mixed bag. Dad get's his turn to do a revenge and picks a track from his favourite album of 2023. Generation Mix Episode 43 - Classical
A sharp left turn for this e[isode where we indulge, not in an artist nor theme, but in a whole genre of music - namely classical. Where else would Mozart, Beethoven, Elgar, Joplin and John Finnemore(?) rub shoulders but in a podcast such as this. Joel has a revenge and it's totally in keeping with the whole podcast.  Joel's Music GCSE really starts to show his musical understanding and he probably knows more than Dad now! One thing mentioned in the podcast is this - go watch it - it's brilliant.  If you have no patience, you might want to jump to 3:50. My YouTube channel: Pockenrop

Generation Mix
Generation Mix Episode 42 - Coldplay
Season 3 continues with an episode on Coldplay.  This was... tricky.  Neither Neil nor Joel enjoyed the music of Coldplay, so how did the CD come about?  Well, they are a hugely successful band of the last 20 years and a friend made a suggested playlist, Neil made the CD and... well this was the result. Listening back was something of a trial but not without the occasional up moment - Joel's revenge is pretty good! Anyway - if you love Coldplay probably best skip this one - there may be a few minor expletives too.  But, if you loathe Coldplay - enjoy it! My YouTube channel: Pockenrop

Generation Mix
Generation Mix Episode 41 - Avicii
Season 3 already (and only a month after the conclusion of season 2) and we turn our attention to the dance music artist Avicii. Avicii's real name was Tim Bergling and he was a Swedish musician and DJ.  His songs involved vocal contributions from a wide range of artists from pop, rock and country. As you may know his story ends tragically in 2018 after 2 albums, a string of hits and a battle with depression. His music lives on, and whilst Neil is no fan of dance music there's something about this fellow that goes way beyond that genre. The original CD compilation was built from a position of ignorance from Neil and so there's a certain ammount of discovery involved for both Neil and Joel, and Joel decides on a nice revenge. The next episode might be more a challenge though for both of them. My YouTube channel: Pockenrop

Generation Mix
Generation Mix Episode 40 - Dire Straits
In this much delayed episode we turn our attention to the music of Dire Straits.  It's a been a loooooooooong time coming and indeed we had recorded this much earlier but the sound was rubbish.  We are so committed to quality listening here on Generation Mix that we didn't want to put out something that was hard to listen to due to the audio quality.   A trawl through all 6 studio albums, taking in a live track and a little extra bonus non-straits piece (which they played at all their gigs after it's release anyway). Joel has a revenge and has some future plans. And this concludes season 2 (finally).  We really will step up the release schedule for season 3. My YouTube channel: Pockenrop

Generation Mix Episode 39 - The Smiths
Well it was bound to happen one day - we broke the hour barrier.  Admittedly we have 25 different songs included in this episode (if you include the revenge) so there is a fair bit. As we trawl our way through The Smiths we end up referencing a certain CBBC television show several times - honestly if you've never seen it click the link and thank us later! Horrible Histories Charles Dickens Song - YouTube Joel's revenge is actually pretty good and his enthusiasm for the podcast may be returning thanks to recent design work experience.  My YouTube channel: Pockenrop

Generation Mix
Generation Mix Episode 38 - Iron Maiden
OK - it took longer than planned and we couldn't pull off the guest but we turn our attention to the greatest Heavy Metal band in the world - Iron Maiden. They've been going over 45 years since their formation in 1975, hitting the big time in 1980 and with a hiccup or two, are still going very strong now (latest album Senjustsu is not represented in this podcast as the CD compilation was made well before its release). There is vocalist discussion, bass discussion, Alfred Lord Tennyson makes a cameo along with a Samuel Taylor Coleridge namecheck and a cult 1970s horror flick. Joel's revenge is fitting but, on this podcast, short - as the original version is sweary and we intend staying PG friendly. My YouTube channel: Pockenrop

Generation Mix Episode 37 - Suzanne Vega
What's this?  A new Generation Mix episode just 2 weeks after the last one?  We really are spoiling you. In this episode it's New York singer/songwriter Suzanne Vega under the spotlight.  Tracks drawn from her entire 30+ year career from Marlene On The Wall through to Harper Lee. It's a great trawl through some excellent songcraft. Joel's revenge is extremely appropriate for this one. Join us soon for the next one, which sees a returning guest. My YouTube channel: Pockenrop

Generation Mix
Generation Mix Episode 36 - George Harrison
A new episode of our podcast with a shorter interval than of late (just 6 weeks or so) and it's a solo Beatle episode with our focus on the Quiet Beatle - George Harrison. George's solo career really kicked off with All Things Must Pass and after a few lengthy hiatuses ended with the posthumous Brainwashed.  We have picks from across his entire 30 year solo career, taking in possibly the greatest ever supergroup,  and even a sneaky little Beatles inclusion of a song that was unreleased until his solo self titled record - I just prefer the Beatle version. Joel, of course gets his revenge. Join us soon as Joel seems to be getting his enthusiasm for the podcast back.  Ooooh!   My YouTube channel: Pockenrop

Generation Mix Episode 35 - Paul Simon & Simon & Garfunkel
Wow.  Another unfeasibly long gap between episodes.  Sorry about that.  On the other hand - this is our longest episode yet as our conversation is increasingly that - a conversation rather than Neil banging on too much.  Joel has some slightly deeper insights and Neil really goes off on a diatribe about modern music and his perception of the lazy writing. Meanwhile, the music of Paul Simon is our focus - both solo and with Art Garfunkel.   The revenge is a Grande one (you'll get the joke later). My YouTube channel: Pockenrop

Generation Mix Episode 34 - Eric Clapton
Wow - it's been 3 months of inactivity.  Joel wasn't looking forward to recording this, but a bonus from the delay has been an increasing ability to analyse and understand music so he really digs in on this episode. 18 tracks drawn from Clapton's entire career from Cream to the solo years. We also have a sponsor - sort of... My YouTube channel: Pockenrop  Joel's YouTube Channel: FoxEatingNuggetsGaming

Generation Mix Episode 33 - Brian Doerksen
Okay - firstly it's been a while as Joel has been super busy with all the usual end of term activities filling up his calendar.  So, apologies for the delay. Also, this is an episode that might be of limited interest as it's on someone who, frankly, many of you may not be aware - the worship leader and songwriter Brian Doerksen.   He's been a huge influence on Neil over the last 30 years. Sit back, listen with an open mind and who knows. Finally, Joel's revenges are getting quite mild lately.  Perhaps he's run out of awful stuff?   My YouTube channel: Pockenrop  Joel's YouTube Channel: FoxEatingNuggetsGaming And don't forget to find us on Facebook to chat and debate - maybe.

Generation Mix Episode 32 - The Pet Shop Boys
In this episode, Neil and Joel enjoy, and that really is the right word, the music of seminal 80's electronic pop duo - The Pet Shop Boys. So much good music from their entire career up to the point the CD was made and as a result, Joel does a revenge that is really not a revenge at all.   My YouTube channel: Pockenrop  Joel's YouTube Channel: FoxEatingNuggetsGaming

Generation Mix Episode 31 - The Beatles Vol II
It's our first repeated artist and it can only be the greatest band that ever there was - The Beatles.   Neil had always intended a Vol II for this artist right back at the very start of the "Daddy's Introduction To..." series and so a few wonderful gems were purposefully held back for this volume. So Don't Pass Us By, join us for a Savoy Truflly with a Walrus and Long Tall Sally. Joel's revenge is not commensurate with how much he actually enjoyed the CD which I don't think is really that fair!   My YouTube channel: Pockenrop  Joel's YouTube Channel: FoxEatingNuggetsGaming

Generation Mix Episode 30 - Chris Rea
Episode 30 take a trip on the Road to Hell to the music of Middlesboro's finest son - Chris Rea. It's safe to say that Joel's enthusiasm levels for this one are low, at least until the last few tracks. His revenge is...OK.  I wonder if anyone else hears the same similarities in the singer's voice to that of Gerard Way.  Let us know over on the Generation Mix and Pockenrop Facebook page. Meanwhile, Joel has joined me on my youtube channel on a fortnightly basis to discuss our top 100 songs.  There are several revenges featured in his lists. Generation Mix Episode 29 - Take That
For episode 29 it's the BoyBand-turned-ManBand, Take That. It's safe to say that Neil was most assuredly NOT a Take That admirer in the 90's.  But, their great comeback kinda won him over.  Great songs and top notch arrangements mean that the second coming of Take That was far more enjoyable that their first.   This is predominantly focussed on the return era, with a couple of the all time early greats mixed in. Joel get's his revenge and it's not too bad if I'm honest.  I liked the song he picked more on second hearing whilst editing this. Generation Mix Episode 28 - Green Day
Episode 28 is a really fun dive into the world of the pop-punk trio Green Day.  The band consists of Billie-Joe Armstrong on guitar and vocals, Mike Dirnt on bass and Tre Cool on drums.   More than any other DIT, this one has won Joel over and the band has ascended into one of his favourites, if not his actual favourite band. Tracks are drawn from Dookie through to Revolution Radio and it was a fun listen and review throughout.   As a result, there is a fairly nice Joel's Revenge - or is it?
