So I very nearly didn’t have a free download for you this month - I was working on something but it didn’t work out and I had to abandon it. Then a family holiday took me out of action for a bit and left me with just a few days to rustle something up. I managed to pull it out of the bag by smashing two random tracks together, and I think it’s actually not half bad. Just a one hour session this week as I slowly recover from being ill, but since it’s my first one in three weeks it felt like I had to do some sort of mix. My hour was an ‘I’ve just spent a load on Bandcamp and Traxsource, let’s see what happens’ special - only tracks that I’ve just downloaded and don’t really know yet… these ones are always fun and a bit unpredictable. Funkier Sounds celebrated its 6th birthday with an hour of tunes from me and then an hour of tunes from a DJ and producer that I’ve been into forever. My hour was the usual mix - starting things mid-tempo and funky, bringing things down a notch and then cranking things a touch with a few promo goodies before the handover. In hour 2 I was dead chuffed to welcome none other than Fingerman. Gregg’s a bit of a legend in the game, and someone who I looked up to loads before I got into producing. Love that I’ve put out a couple of bits on his annual Hot Digits compilations (eyes on this year!), love that we hung out at Glasto a few years back, and love that he’s done a brilliant mix for my show! It’s the expected level of lushness, launching straight in after the trademark spoken intro. Gets quite full on towards the end too, but always keeping it cool, well-mixed and very Fingerman. My hour started off nice and funky, quickly built up the tempo to cram in a few promos, and ended up with a few dusty disco belters north of 130BPM. Fun times! I was lucky to snag a very special guest for the second hour. French DJ, singer, composer, multi instrumentalist, producer and audio engineer David Baluteau AKA Joi N’Juno. He’s another one of my favourite producers, specialising in funky, danceable tunes with African influences. His mix is bloody brilliant - lots of tropical sunshine sounds, some solid nu-disco and housed up worldwide oddities, with a few of his own in there, including a bit of unreleased stuff. The first half of this episode of Funkier Sounds was very much a Southport Weekender affair, thanks to me making my second visit there last weekend. It was, with one exception, all tracks I’d heard there, so after a little warm up it was more or less wall to wall soulful house with a splash of gospel house for good measure. This month’s freebie is my own version of a track I absolutely love. Most people know The Brothers Johnson for the classic and very good track Stomp, but the true heads among us know that The Real Thing is where it’s really at. The original slaps plenty already with its dramatic strings and falsetto vocal, but I’ve beefed things up a couple of notches and added some breakdowns for dramatic effect. I’m so pleased with how this one has come out, and I’d love for you to download and enjoy. And yes, of course I kept the sax solo!

My hour of Episode 155 was, once again, a bit of a tribute to geniuses that have sadly left us recently. After bidding farewell to Gwen McCrae and Roberta Flack last show, I did the same this time for the great Roy Ayers, Angie Stone and Yam Who? of Midnight Riot. I opened the show with his remix of my own track that came out on MR a couple of years back, and fitted in a few from him and Roy, and one from Angie too. Come on 2025 - stop it! Hour two was very special this time. I brought you a guest mix from a very talented producer who caught my ear late last year - Bralan Arias from Bogota, Colombia. His mix is almost all his own stuff, and almost all of it is unreleased. It’s an absolute treat - loads of his trademark jazzy house sounds, some cheeky samples, plenty of Rhodes, some acid… and things pick up a fair bit towards the end.
