I met Jaden back in the early days of Knife Talk Podcast . He was a young guy starting to learn about knife making and sending us at the podcast a lot of great questions for the show. Over the years we saw him as a growing knife maker, good guy and supporter of the show. A couple of years I saw that he was involved in a horrific car accident that changed his life. Ben Snure is back and just finished forging in the Amarillo World Championship Blacksmiths. After months of practice Ben competed in forging Tongs, Horse Shoes and made it really far. Kay Foye is an incredible Knifemaker whose direction focuses on the the voice and memories of the objects she uses to create her work. A lot of that direction comes from her experiences ranging from working in the New York fashion industry to being a ranch hand in Colorado. The evolution of her work like many artists is influenced by her surroundings as well as the people she talks to. Her process has led her to finding patrons who give her heirlooms and keepsakes for her to use in knife handles that appear to be a sculptural collage. Contrasting with the impermanence of carbon steel, or even a farriers rasp, these intricately built handles on give the feeling of preserved memories with the expectation of making new memories as the patina develops. Steve Pellegrino passed away on February 27 from injuries in car accident on his way home from his shop. He was an awesome Bladesmith and a good friend. I thought on this episode I would tell some stories about him and talk about his work. Incredible talent, kind, generous and happy.
