In this episode of the Friends in Beauty Podcast, I am answering another Ask Your Best Friend in Beauty letter. I love these episodes because I get to support you directly with real questions that beauty pros are struggling with. Today’s letter is from a new makeup artist who has been doing friends and family for free and now wants to take the next step into becoming a paid, booked, and confident makeup artist.
If you are a beginner makeup artist who wants to turn your passion into a real business, this episode is for you. I share the mindset shift you need to make, where to begin, how to position yourself in the industry, and the first steps I believe every new makeup artist should take. I also share the things I did in the early years of my career that helped me stand out, build connections, sharpen my skills, and grow my reputation as a trusted artist in the beauty community.
Whether you feel overwhelmed, unsure where to start, or like the industry is too saturated, I want you to know that there is space for you. You can grow, learn, improve, and create a beautiful career in makeup. You just have to start with intention.
💡 Key Takeaways
Start with your why so you have a strong foundation for your business
You do not need to serve everyone, focus on your ideal client
Show your progress and let people grow with you
Network up and across to build genuine industry relationships
You do not need perfection to begin, you get better by doing
📩 Do you want to send in your own letter?
If you have a personal, business, beauty, or industry question that you want advice on, email your letter to: podcast@friendsinbeauty.com
Use the subject line: Dear Best Friend in Beauty
If you are ready to stop treating your makeup skills like a hobby and step into your role as a booked makeup artist, this episode will give you the clarity and motivation to take your first steps with confidence.

In this episode of the Friends in Beauty Podcast, I am sharing how you can go into the new year richer by tapping into grants and funding opportunities that are available right now for beauty professionals and entrepreneurs.
Times are uncertain, especially if you are in the United States and dealing with government shutdowns or financial stress. Many beauty pros have a nine to five or rely on other income, so I want to help you focus on what you can control. One of the best ways to create more financial security for your business is by applying for grants. Yes, grants are free money that you do not have to pay back.
I walk you through several grants that are currently open, who qualifies for them, and how you can apply. I also share my favorite platform for grant applications, HelloSkip, and how it can make the process easier, faster, and more organized. I want you to shift your mindset and treat grant applications the same way people treat job applications. If you can apply for jobs, you can also apply for grants. Your business deserves that same energy.
I have won grants myself and it has helped my business grow, so I want the same for you. Whether you are a full time beauty pro or balancing your business with a job, this episode gives you the motivation and tools you need to start applying for grants before the year ends.
💡 Key Takeaways
Grants are a powerful way to go into the new year with more money for your business
Treat grants like job applications and stay consistent
HelloSkip can support you with tools, AI writing help, and weekly grant opportunities
Do not count yourself out, because your story may be the one that stands out
Start now so you can begin 2026 with more financial freedom and options

In this episode of the Friends in Beauty Podcast, I’m opening up about something that isn’t talked about enough in our industry — the not-so-pretty side of meeting your mentors.
I recently hosted my first event for someone else, and it reminded me how much I love community, connection, and growth. I’m so grateful for all the beautiful opportunities that keep flowing my way. But as much as I love highlighting the positive moments, I also believe it’s important to share the other side — the experiences that challenge us and teach us valuable lessons.
In this episode, I talk about the moments when meeting people you admire doesn’t go as you imagined. From unexpected interactions with mentors to disappointing experiences with people I once looked up to, I share how those moments taught me about discernment, boundaries, and the importance of staying grounded in who I am.
I still believe in mentorship and community with all my heart, but I’ve learned that admiration without discernment can lead to disappointment. Everyone we meet, no matter their status or achievements, is human. And sometimes, those uncomfortable experiences are exactly what we need to grow stronger and more self-aware.
💡 Key Takeaways
Admire people’s work, not just their persona.
Social media shows highlights, not the full picture.
Discernment protects you from disappointment.
It’s okay to stand up for yourself, even with people you admire.
You can still believe in mentorship and community while holding boundaries.
If you’ve ever met someone you admired and walked away disappointed, this episode will remind you that it’s okay. Every experience, good or bad, is part of your journey. Stay grounded, keep your heart open, and remember that you’re just as worthy of admiration as the people you look up to.

In this episode of the Friends in Beauty Podcast, I’m diving into a topic that I know so many of us can relate to: fear. Whether it’s the fear of showing up online, raising your rates, hosting your first class, or being truly seen, I want to help you understand how to stop letting fear take over and start taking your power back.
As we step into the last quarter of the year, I’ve been reflecting a lot, not just on what I’ve accomplished, but on the things that have been holding me back. Before I plan my goals for next year, I always take time to look at what’s standing in my way. And this time, that led me to a powerful concept called interviewing your fear.
In this episode, I share what it really means to interview your fear, how to sit with it, ask it questions, and uncover what’s really behind it. I talk about my own experiences with fear, from worrying if people would show up to my first class, to realizing that some of the fears I carry weren’t even mine to begin with. They were passed down from others.
You’ll hear how I’ve learned to shift from confronting fear to getting curious about it. Because fear doesn’t always go away. It just needs to be understood, acknowledged, and then moved through with compassion.
💡 Key Takeaways
Before setting new goals, take time to reflect on what’s been holding you back.
Fear isn’t your enemy. It’s a message that something inside you needs attention.
Name your fears, ask them what they’re trying to tell you, and take small steps anyway.
Each time you act in spite of fear, you build deeper self-trust.
You don’t have to be fearless to move forward. You just have to be willing.

In this episode of the Friends in Beauty Podcast, I’m sharing how I spent the month of September fully immersed in community, connection, and creativity. 💕
I’ve noticed that so many beauty pros and creatives — myself included — have been feeling a little uninspired lately. In this episode, I open up about what’s been happening in our industry, why so many of us are losing our spark, and most importantly, how to get it back.
From attending inspiring industry events to having real, unfiltered conversations with my #FriendsInBeauty, I was reminded of how powerful community really is. We’re all craving authenticity and deeper connection — not just surface-level networking — and I want to talk about what that means for us as beauty professionals.
I also share how I’ve been prioritizing rest and giving myself space to recharge creatively, and how those moments of stillness are helping me realign with my purpose. If you’ve been feeling disconnected from your passion or unsure of what’s next, this episode will give you the reminder you need that you’re not alone.
Community is the cure for creative burnout.
The beauty industry is craving more authenticity and real connection.
Rest isn’t lazy — it’s part of the process.
Reconnecting with your passion starts with being around people who remind you why you started.
You don’t have to do this journey alone — your community matters.

On this week’s solo episode of the Friends in Beauty Podcast, I’m keeping it real with you. This is my last episode before I take a much-needed pause, and I want to share why.
I’m opening up about what burnout really feels like as a beauty pro and entrepreneur, and why it’s so important for us to prioritize our health for longevity in this industry. From setting and honoring boundaries with clients, to living in Washington, DC during such a tense political climate, to processing the weight of world news in Gaza, Sudan, and Libya — it’s been a lot.
This episode is my reminder to you (and to myself): we don’t have to glorify pushing through exhaustion. Rest is revolutionary. Boundaries are protection. And longevity in beauty comes when we choose peace over pressure.
✨ Tune in, reflect with me, and know that this pause is not the end — it’s the reset Friends in Beauty needs to grow even bigger and better.
Oh yea! And I’m doing my makeup so you get to see some of my favorite beauty products and try some new ones with me!
If you’ve ever felt burnt out, overwhelmed, or unsure how to balance your artistry with your well-being, this episode is for you. 💕 Let me know what you think.
Enjoy this episode!

In this week’s episode of the Friends in Beauty Podcast, we’re joined by Tomara Watkins, the powerhouse President of Buttah Skin. Tomara has been shaping the brand since 2020—first as a strategic growth consultant, and now as the executive leading its continued expansion and innovation.
We dive into what it truly takes to run a fast-growing beauty brand from the inside—from managing operations and scaling strategy to staying rooted in inclusive beauty. Tomara shares the realities of upholding a founder’s vision while driving business forward, what kind of structure a brand needs before stepping away from founder-led visibility, and the metrics that matter when you’re scaling with intention.
We also explore how Buttah Skin is incorporating AI into its strategy, and Tomara gives her candid thoughts on Black-owned beauty brands being acquired—what it means for the culture, and how founders can prepare for legacy moves.
With a 12-year track record of scaling multicultural beauty and CPG brands like Bevel, Hyper Skin, and Alodia Haircare, plus a background in leading eCommerce strategy at Microsoft/Xbox, Tomara brings a powerful blend of corporate leadership, financial acumen, and authentic brand storytelling to the table. She’s also a proud graduate of Howard University and the University of Pennsylvania.
Whether you’re a beauty pro, a founder, or just curious about what happens behind the scenes of your favorite brands—this conversation is packed with gems you won’t want to miss.

Paying homage to Aaliyah, Blade, and Dolemite in the Halloween episode
Making a wig for a guinea pig to match Lisa Ann Walter’s character
