Story Transcript:

En: Shades of red, orange, and gold dance over the hills of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.

En: It is Easter, and the garden is a paradise of autumn microbes, a quiet oasis tucked away in the heart of Kaapstad.

En: Carl and Elsa walk together along the winding paths.

Af: Carl voel vol moed.
En: Carl feels full of courage.

Af: "Kom, Elsa!
En: "Come, Elsa!

Af: Ek wil jou die geheime waterval wys!
En: I want to show you the secret waterfall!"

Af: " sê hy.
En: he says.

En: Last year, he discovered a secluded part of the garden and now wants to show it to her.

Af: Maar Elsa is nie so seker nie.
En: But Elsa is not so sure.

Af: "Is dit veilig, Carl?
En: "Is it safe, Carl?

En: We shouldn't stray from the main path," she answers, slightly worried.

Af: Tog, Carl voel avontuurlustig.
En: Yet, Carl feels adventurous.

Af: "Dis nie ver nie, Elsa.
En: "It's not far, Elsa.

En: Trust me," he says and quickly slips off the path, through the trees.

En: Elsa hesitates for a moment, but she is also curious about the beauty Carl describes.

En: The leaves crunch under their feet as they disappear deeper into the garden.

En: Hours pass, and the sun sets slowly, the light fading in the autumn air.

En: "Carl, I think we're lost," says Elsa, her voice slightly trembling.

Af: Carl, nou minder vol selfvertroue, kyk rondom hulle.
En: Carl, now less confident, looks around them.

Af: "Ek is seker die waterval is net 'n entjie verder," hoop hy hardop.
En: "I'm sure the waterfall is just a little further," he hopes aloud.

En: But he also knows they must find their way back before it gets dark.

Af: Hulle staan stil en luister.
En: They stand still and listen.

En: In the distance, they hear music—the Easter celebrations at the main garden.

Af: "Elsa, hoor jy dit?
En: "Elsa, do you hear it?"

Af: " vra Carl.
En: Carl asks.

Af: "Ons moet die musiek volg," sê Elsa vasberade.
En: "We need to follow the music," Elsa says determinedly.

En: They quickly start moving in the direction of the sounds, through the bushes and over the paths.

Af: Die reis terug voel eindeloos, maar...
