Story Transcript:

En: In the fresh spring air of the dorpie, the community hall was bustling with activity.

En: Posters explaining voting rules hung on the walls.

En: Inside the hall, people pressed forward to the little booths to make their crosses and have their say heard.

En: Kobus, with his big smile, walked flamboyantly into the hall.

Af: Hy dra 'n helder oranje superheldpak met 'n glinsterende rooi masker.
En: He wore a bright orange superhero suit with a glittering red mask.

En: He spread his arms wide, as if he expected people to clap and cheer.

Af: Die mense stop en staar verbaas.
En: The people stopped and stared in surprise.

En: Annelie, his caring but sometimes bossy sister, was already at the front of the line.

En: She looked at Kobus in shock and shook her head with a small smile.

Af: "Kobus!" fluister Annelie, "wat doen jy?"
En: "Kobus!" whispered Annelie, "what are you doing?"

Af: Kobus glimlag breed en sê in 'n ernstige fluister, "Ek het gedink daar is 'n kostuumkompetisie!"
En: Kobus smiled broadly and said in a serious whisper, "I thought there was a costume contest!"

En: Pieter, their neighbor with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, stood at the back of the line.

En: He burst out laughing, the sound filling the room and breaking the silence.

En: "Well, if it isn't Kobus the superhero!" shouted Pieter, with a sense of humor that immediately lightened the atmosphere.

En: Kobus saw the confusion and quickly decided to make the best of the situation.

Af: "Dames en here, vandag kom ek geklee as die Defender van Demokrasie!" kondig hy aan en maak 'n groot buiging.
En: "Ladies and gentlemen, today I am dressed as the Defender of Democracy!" he announced, making a grand bow.

En: The audience began to laugh, the tension melting away like snow on a sunny day.

En: "I thought a little fun couldn't hurt!" he added, flicking his heroic cape.
