Another live episode in front of a wonderful audience from Voksenåsen Summer Academy 2025. Our guests, Isabelle van Keulen and Malin Broman, are two absolute powerhouses in both the violin and viola world. They have received medals from kings, have been soloists with the worlds most renowned symphony orchestras, have organized festivals, recorded numerous albums and much more. But they are also lovely to talk to and we proud to have them. A lot of interesting subjects are turned over, but most of all it’s just great to listen to such wonderful personalities that have had incredible lives in music.
Chann Cornilleau works with the amazing Florian Leonhard Fine Violins in London, and she is an expert in restoring violins. She knows everything about the physics of an instrument and she works her magic in getting the exact sound a musician looks for. During this episode she looks over Frederik's violin which is a Montagnana. Has he been taking well care of the instrument? Listen and everything will be uncovered!
It's been a long summer but we are back with a vengeance! Live from Voksenåsen Academy 2025 with two awesome quests: Jennifer Stumm and Asbjørn Nørgaard. Both viola players and wonderful musicians! We have a chat about why the viola is such an incredible instrument and why it touches such a special place in our hearts. In the audience we have all the students from the academy, and it's a blast! During the podcast Asbjørn even grants us a whole new concept: Violism. That's right folks. You heard it first here and mark our words, it's here to stay!
During this episode we ask ourselves the question, ‘why do we do what we do?’ and like usual we get around. Everything from chiropractic (yes, that is a difficult word, Frederik) to work life balance. A musician’s life is often a life lived under pressure but also one that is highly rewarding. Like that highly satisfying back crack.
This week we dive into old memories and stories from our years of studying. And we do it from the basement of Frederik Øland’s home. Now known to us as ‘The Cave’. It is a place of wonder and freedom, filled with music, comic books, fictional maps, board games and other incredibly nerdy stuff. Best place ever.
Vilde Frang is still with us and the conversation goes from the ultra nerdy (how does a Guarneri del Gesu smell) to big picture repertoire, passion and culture in general. We are thrilled Vilde could stay for a sequel and we could have gone on for ages. Thank you again to the awesome Vilde Frang!
We are truly honored to have the one and only Vilde Frang with us! Vilde is a true violin super star but she is also incredibly nice and inspiring to be around. The conversation is actually so great and interesting that there might be a sequel coming up... Stay tuned!
This week we have the great Catherine Cho from Juilliard School in NY with us. Catherine is one of the most sought after teachers in the States and having studied with Dorothy DeLay she is pretty much royalty when it comes to teaching. Listen to her great tips and advice here on Fiddle Talks
In this first episode of 2025 we have the honor of having the great violinist Johan Dalene on the show. Only 24 years old but already a rockstar of the classical world, Johan has insights and good advice on how to approach competitions and life as a violinist. Peter is in Oslo, Frederik in Copenhagen, but modern day technology makes it possible anyhow. (Just don't tell anyone about the not so awesome sound quality)
Whether they are 500 years old or if they were made last year, violins will always have an air of mystery around them. They become our close companions and sometimes even development personalities of their own. Some of us even give them names and they become part of our emotional life. But how do you choose an instrument? And how do you part from one when it has been part of you forever?
They are easy to hate and hard to love. Most of us go through several of them during our schooling and careers and most of us struggle with them. Of course we talk about auditions. During this episode we give our best advice on how to deal with them but we also just give place to a talk about a touchy subject!
Fiddle Talks is finally live! The show about all things violin but also about hygge and friendship is ready to rumble! During this episode we talk and share stories about our own beginnings and we struggle with giving our show a name
