When I was a little kid, my dad's favorite song was Roy Rogers & Dale Evans's "Happy Trails." Here are the first few verses:
Happy trails to you, until we meet again
Happy trails to you, keep smilin' until then
Who cares about the clouds when we're together?
Just sing a song and bring the sunny weather
Happy trails to you, 'till we meet again
Some trails are happy ones
Others are blue
It's the way you ride the trail that counts
Here's a happy one for you.
So, I suppose it's fitting that FBOL ends (for now? maybe?) while talking about one of America's great Westerns, Larry McMurtry's LONESOME DOVE. Everything is in this book, partially because it's over 900 pages long, and partially because so much of America stopped progressing in the 1870s. This book is everything, and it is wonderful.
I decided not to cut it down into two episodes, but I understand that two hours of book talk is a lot. I hope you all get as much out of it as I did recording it with Lynne & Leslie.

My favorite lawyer is back to discuss the crossover between Jurisprudence and ChickLit– Abby ( @ClapIfYouLikeMe ) was forced through the wringer with Amanda Brown's original text, LEGALLY BLONDE.

Dr. Daniel Kasper (@ghostingdani over on Bluesky!) is back in a very short turn around to discuss Faustian bargains, fashion, and Bush-era expectations in this FIRST installment of our long (long) conversation about THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. He manages to bring it back to Shirley Jackson rather eloquently in this episode!

If you're familiar with the movie, it means you probably know NOTHING about the book. JAWS by Peter Benchley is an absolute classic, a multi-million dollar earning blockbuster book turned movie that just about MADE Steven Spielberg. But what's up with the novel? Just some of your classic summertime, monster-movie beach read type stuff like mafia-led real estate fraud, class politics, and dead sheep.

The incomparable Martha Smith (@MostlyMartha on Bluesky) is here to discuss Sarah Vowell's "creative nonfiction" juggernaut ASSASSINATION VACATION. Released 20 years ago this year, the novel-length personal essay on Vowell's own ruminations on murder, death, and the American dream is really hitting... well, not differently, but exactly the same as when we first read it in 2005.

Lauren Emily Whalen is here to discuss Joan Didion's most celebrated work of fiction: the novel PLAY IT AS IT LAYS. We discuss cool girl myths, aging, mental illness, and worrying about the livers of anyone who lived through the 1970s.

Vera Caspary's LAURA was translated to screen for the first time in the heyday of the Hayes Code and classic film. So how does one capture the essence of a novel about a career girl coveted by three very different men, only to meet her grisly fate at the hand of one of her jealous suitors? By hiring Vincent Price, of course!

My friend Chael (@NarratorChael) is back to discuss one of her favorite books from her tweenage years: Michael Ende's THE NEVERENDING STORY. Written by a man whose artist father was literally persecuted for being degenerate by the Nazis, THE NEVERENDING STORY is a beautiful consideration on depression and passion and what it means to be a child in a world that really seems to hate children.
The second hour of our show will be dropping next week!
Chael's other work includes the podcasts Once Upon a Rewatch (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/once-upon-a-rewatch/id1553803675) and Vampires Ruined My Life (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/vampires-ruined-my-life/id1584585139).

TW: Rape, sexual assault, CSA, TERF politics, JK Rowling, Neil Gaiman, grooming, racism, domestic violence
I suppose the title says it all. My friend Danielle Ryan (@danirat on Bluesky) is back to have this weird and uncomfortable and emotional conversation about how parts of our souls are inextricably linked to art we loved... and what happens to our souls when it turns out the artists are absolute shitbags.

Back for season seven, longtime friend-of-the-show Malavika Praseed (@MalavikaIsWriting over on Instagram) is here to talk not about her favorite book, but a book that ticks very few of her boxes– Antoine de Saint-Exupery's THE LITTLE PRINCE. We ask a nearly century-old question: who is this book actually for?

Did we manage to talk for over an hour about one of the shortest books Americans were ever assigned in school? Yes, we did! I'm joined by Peter Huycke (https://bsky.app/profile/p1huycke.bsky.social) to discuss Jack London's CALL OF THE WILD, dog socialism, and the American need to be the lead dog.
At the end of the episode, Peter suggests reading SCARBOROUGH by Catherine Hernandez, and you can find the book on Bookshop.org: https://bookshop.org/p/books/scarborough-catherine-hernandez/9986609?ean=9781551526775&next=t

Guys, I am genuinely sorry. Between jury duty and work stuff, I did not have the time to edit up one of the new shows I have recorded. BUT! I am re-posting one of my absolute favorite episodes from seasons past. I hope you can enjoy it and forgive me!
My guest is Amrita By The Book (https://www.instagram.com/amrita_by_the_book) whom I've lost some contact with since Twitter decided to go fascist. Take a look at all of her posted content, and hope that she is well!

The wonderful, fantastic Dani Ryan (@DaniRat) is here to discuss that book about bunnies that isn't about anything but bunnies, nope, not in the least. Let's silflay a while and get into some weird animal facts, our love for BigWig, and if you want a real treat, you have to become a Patron for the full-length episode *and* to see screen grabs from the video of when I looked up General Woundwort from the 1970s cartoon for the first time. Abby (online as @ClapIfYouLikeMe) is one of the only practicing lawyers I know, so I called on her to help me discuss one of the now-archetypal characters in American Lit– the rogue lawyer known as Perry Mason, the centerpiece of the decades-long series written by Erle Stanley Gardiner.
