Explorations on Feminist Leadership: 2022-23
S1E1: Reimagining Labour Relations

Over the years, the issues on labour relations regarding women have centered around unpaid/underpaid work, feminization of migration, unfavorable working conditions for women in low-paying jobs and marginalization of women in decision-making roles. Ayushmita, Anshika and Ludmila choose to re-imagine and re-assess these labour relations by trying to deconstruct patriarchal capitalism in light of contemporary events. They explore what social justice should look like in the labour market for women and how effective unionization along with legal reforms can help women workers as feminist leaders.

S1E6: Parenting in Popular Culture

The first social conditioning children receive is from their parents and this helps them build their very first sense of identity within this world. With the dawn of mass media, pop culture is present everywhere. Since we consume it all the time, it is crucial to scrutinise it for the various political undertones it carries, to analyse gender subordination and identify the underlying causes of gender oppression. Anjali, Sahil and Poornima share their observations, personal experiences and understanding of parenting with regards to pop culture and how it has shaped their lived experiences.

S1E5: Changing Narratives

Mrinalini, Pooja and illesha meet in a cafe, to trace their stories –the ones they have been told, the ones they have lived, and the ones they would like to tell about leadership and heroism. As young women, they feel deeply alienated and enraged by the popular trope of the hero “saviour” who operates in individual prosperity and leaves the love and labour of the collective non-male invisible. The traditional notion of leadership doesn't recognise all the stakeholders involved. The current dominant structure of top-down leadership and patriarchal heroism never did benefit the entire community.

S1E4: Self and Structural Care

At a time when self-care has transitioned from meaningful acts of self-preservation and rest to capitalised notions of practising a skincare routine involving exclusive products or taking an expensive vacation, it becomes imperative to examine whether self-care continues to be helpful. Lakshana, Jyotsna and Anjali discuss how structural care, through the institutions and systems that are in place, in addition to self-care and community care, could provide a more sustainable and effective solution to nurture in the way that self-care seeks to do in isolation.

S1E7: Safety in Educational Spaces

The way educational spaces are conceptualized and the way they operate is with the image of an authority figure ‘passing down information/expertise’ to a set of clueless, naive students. As long as there is a rigid hierarchy of one who learns and one who teaches, there is limited scope to qualify an institution as a safe space. Manasvi, Sanskriti and Srishti aim to delve into the ideas of what educational spaces are, how they create a knowledge dissemination mechanism, why they often look monolithic and what safety means and entails.

S1E3: Accountability and Correcting Harm

The occupations taken by the police-military-market-state nexus do not serve the needs of the most vulnerable, and in fact cause harm in most cases. Jasmine, Sarika and Jyotika come together to talk about accountability and correcting harm in the context of their commitment to anti-capitalist and anti-carceral politics. They explore existing abolitionist and transformative ideologies and also discuss the various structures of oppression that shape the politics around harm, danger and violence based on race, caste, class, religion, militarisation, citizenship and borders.

S1E2: Love and Care in Relationships

Love & care are the most integral and indispensable parts across all forms of life. Love is a simple yet complex emotion, felt, studied, dissected and theorised by many minds across different generations. While love and it’s definition is ever-evolving, Noor, Pallack and Gaytri attempt to understand these nuances through their personal and unique lived experiences. They hope to create a candid dialogue around what it means to each of them from where they stand in different junctures of life, through intimate lenses and further contextualized by their feminist journey.
