After the French Revolution, peasants, professionals, and artists all sought stability and fought to retain their new powers. But middle class bourgeoisie designed a new constitution that carved out control of government power. In response to insurrections in 1795, young general Napoleon Bonaparte was released from prison and tasked with establishing order. The rest is history.
