Episode 21: Neighbors Build Climate Resilience in Their Watersheds

In this double-length episode, we speak with two guests from the Watershed Project, a Bay Area organization that protects and restores our landscapes that drain into waterways: creeks, rivers, and ultimately the San Francisco Bay. Teachers and young people benefit from their education and internship programs.

    Host: Dalya Massachi

Great Guest Quote: “With climate change being at the forefront of so many of the problems that we're going to face, investing in those under-resourced, frontline communities to make them more resilient to the changing climate is such an important thing.” - Juliana Gonzalez, Executive Director, The Watershed Project

Episode 20: Cultivating Their Own Sustainable Food Systems: Indigenous and Black Communities (SF Bay Area and Detroit, MI)

In this double-length episode, we speak with folks doing similar work in both the San Francisco Bay Area and Detroit, Michigan. Our two guests – Joshua Hoyt from the Cultural Conservancy’s Native Foodways Program and Shakara Tyler from the  Detroit Black Community Food Sovereignty Network – are reclaiming the right to feed themselves and own their communities' ecologically sustainable food systems. They are nourishing their communities by restoring cultural and spiritual ties with the Earth, building their local economies, and healing historical traumas. We all learned a lot about how their work is taking shape in different cultural contexts, with strong overlap.

Great Guest Quote: “If we don't actually address the ways that we relate to the environment and our place in it, then we will just continue to make the same mistakes over and over again.” - Joshua Hoyt, Native Foodways Program

    Episode 16: Indigenous-Led Climate Justice

We speak with Shaandiin Cedar, a tribal member of the Navajo Nation and an advocate for indigenous-led climate action. Shaandiin discusses how Indigenous communities can help lead the way to addressing our climate crisis. We learn about the intricacies involved with climate justice for Native peoples, including both climate impacts that are already happening and avoiding or lessening future harms. How can we honor and center the experiences and wisdom of Indigenous peoples? And how can non-Native people support them during our shared climate crisis?

Guest: Shaandiin Cedar, advocate for Indigenous-led climate action and Senior Associate, Powerhouse Ventures

Great Guest Quote: “Not leveraging Indigenous ingenuity, I think, is just a giant missed opportunity for our collective effort to mitigate climate change.”

In this episode, we explore hands-on climate education and action at elementary schools: featuring McDowell Elementary in Petaluma, CA.  For many years, 3rd grade teacher Angela Werner has incorporated a slew of climate education activities into her curriculum - from creek restoration to visits to her local wetlands to cultivating a school garden. She and her former student, Sherlyn Deras Ramos, reflect on their experiences and encourage other schools to get involved in nature-based programs. Find out how elementary school students are becoming the next generation of everyday climate champions. Guests: Angela Werner, 3rd grade teacher and Sherlyn Deras Ramos, 4th grade student Great Guest Quote: “I would say to just jump in 'cause there's so much out there. Episode 14: Reducing Plastic Pollution in Oakland
In this episode, we discuss proposed legislation to drastically reduce plastic pollution in Oakland, CA. As demand decreases for fossil fuels as a power source, we're seeing that the production of plastics is actually *increasing*. But California is pushing back. Oakland is working to become the next city to limit food and beverage containers currently choking our San Francisco Bay. As a member of Reusable Oakland, our guest explains the proposed city ordinance, why we need it, and the personal story of why he works so passionately on this issue.
