In this talk from the Mahabodhi Society, the monk discusses the concept of seeking refuge and protection in life, using the metaphor of a tree's shade. He explores different kinds of protection, starting with the fleeting comfort of a tree's shadow from the sun's heat. He then progresses to the protection provided by parents, followed by the guidance of teachers, and finally the security offered by just and righteous rulers. While these forms of protection offer temporary security in this life, the monk explains that the ultimate and supreme refuge is the Dhamma, the teachings of the Buddha. He emphasizes that the Dhamma offers protection not only in this life from physical and mental suffering but also in future lives, and is the only path to the ultimate liberation of Nirvana. He reminds listeners that in a time of global crisis, the Dhamma is a source of calm, wisdom, and strength, and encourages them to put their faith in its teachings to find lasting peace.
