Tony Roper dreamed of racing in NASCAR. He got within touching distance but never quite made it. At 35 he was thinking about retirement but the race at Texas Motor Speedway unfortunately put pay to that. Not only did the Roper family lose Tony, but within the year, another tragic incident happened.
On the first ever episode of Dying to Race, we will look back at the life of Henry Surtees, who tragically died aged 18 in an F2 race at Brands Hatch in 2009. Son of legendary racer John Surtees, Henry was carving out his own career in Motorsport climbing up through the ranks and getting a seat in F2. Having had an average start to the new F2 season, Henry was looking forward to his home race at Brands Hatch and managed to get a podium in the first race that weekend. In the second race however, things took a tragic turn in an almost unbelievable way.
