Can Small Teams Still Compete in World Cup Downhill?

There’s been a lot of discussion around wether or not it’s getting harder for the smaller teams to survive in World Cup downhill. This week I’m joined by Team High Country’s Chris Higgs to find out how they are making it work.

Chris has poured everything into creating opportunities for the next generation of downhill racers. We chat about what it really costs to compete at the highest level, how he and his wife self-fund the team, the challenges of working with sponsors, and what it takes to look and act like a professional team on a privateer budget.

Chris also shares his vision for the future, becoming a World Series Team, supporting both juniors and elites, and why he believes keeping junior categories in the World Cup is essential for the health of the sport.

If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to build a downhill racing team from the ground up, or you just love hearing stories from people who genuinely live and breathe mountain biking, then this episode is one you won’t want to miss.So sit back, hit play, and enjoy this episode with Team High Country's Chris Higgs.

The Most Misunderstood Component on Your Bike (And How to Get It Right)

How much thought do you really give to your saddle? It’s one of the most personal contact points on the bike and yet, for most of us, it’s also one of the least understood.

This week, I’m joined by Sean Madsen, a true expert when it comes to bike fit and saddle design. Sean’s spent over 25 years working with some of the biggest names in cycling. From developing products used by the pros, to helping everyday riders find real comfort on the bike.

We get into what actually makes a saddle comfortable, why numbness and pain aren’t something you should just accept, and how things like shape, padding, and rail material all come into play. We also chat about the future, 3D printed saddles, new materials, and how often you should really be replacing yours.

So, if you’ve ever wondered whether your saddle’s helping or holding you back, sit tight, this one’s going to change the way you think about one of the most overlooked parts of your bike. So sit back, hit play, and enjoy this episode with Sean Madsen.

Mont-Sainte-Anne 2025 – Post-Race Show

I’m Chris, this is the Downtime Podcast, and you’re tuned into our final post-race show of the season from Mont-Sainte-Anne, with Neko Mulally and Olly Morris.

It’s been a big year and honestly, a tough one for the podcast too. We’ve had no brand support for this World Cup series, which is the most expensive content we make. But we’ve done it because we love it, and we know you love it too.

Along the way, a bunch of you have stepped up through Patreon, and that’s made a huge difference, so a massive thank you to everyone who’s been part of that.

As I record this, we don’t yet have support locked in for 2026, so our Patreon community really is what’s going to keep us going. Because of that, we’re going to be doing more for out Patreon’s in 2026, and you’ll hear more about that soon.

If you want to be part of the crew that makes our World Cup coverage possible and helps the podcast in general, you can join from just £3 a month, that’s less than the price of a coffee, but it goes a long way. Just head to patreon.com/downtimepodcast.

Alright, let’s get into it. It’s the final round of the year, we’re at the iconic Mont-Sainte-Anne, and we’re digging into the battles for wins and overalls as they played out, with expert insight from the guys on the ground. So sit back, hit play and listen to this Mont-Sainte-Anne post-race show with Neko Mulally and Olly Morris

Mont-Sainte-Anne 2025 – Pre-Race Show

I’m Chris, this is the Downtime Podcast and you’re tuned into our 2025 Mont-Sainte-Anne pre-race show with Chris Kilmurray for the final round of the 2025 WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series.

If you’re listening, that means that like me, you probably LOVE the sport and want to know as much as possible about what’s going on. That’s exactly what we are here to do.

Throughout the season, we'll be bringing you analysis and insights that you won’t hear elsewhere.

However, as you probably know, the mountain bike industry isn’t in a great place right now and as a result, this series doesn’t have any brand support. The World Cup coverage is the most expensive thing I produce, as it often includes travel and I like to pay the guys for the expertise that they bring to the table.

So I’ve been funding it myself, along with the support of our wonderful Patreons.

If this show means something to you, and you want to help me keep it going, then please consider supporting us over on Patreon. You can sign up for as little as £3 a month at patreon.com/downtimepodcast. That’s less than the price of a coffee, but it makes a real difference. The more of you who chip in, the more likely it is that we can keep doing this.

I know times are tight. But if you value what we’re creating here, if it helps you stay connected to the sport you love, then now’s the time to chip in and help out.

Alright, it’s the final round of the year and we’re headed to the iconic Mont-Sainte-Anne. We dig into the challenges of this unique track, the differences and similarities to Lake Placid as well as who to watch in the upcoming battles as multiple overalls go to the wire. So sit back, hit play and listen to this Mont-Sainte-Anne pre-race show with Chris Kilmurray.

Downtime - The Mountain Bike Podcast
Lake Placid / Whiteface 2025 – Pre-Race Show

I’m Chris, this is the Downtime Podcast and you’re tuned into our 2025 Whiteface / Lake Placid pre-race show with Chris Kilmurray for round 9 of the 2025 WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series.

This week we’re heading to Whiteface Mountain, Lake Placid, for Round 9 of the 2025 UCI Downhill World Cup. It’s a brand-new venue, and the course looks set to deliver something really special. With everything still to play for, tyres hit dirt here for the very first time. Join me and Chris Kilmurray as we break down what to expect, the key challenges riders will face, and why this Whiteface debut could be one of the standout races of the season. So sit back, hit play and listen to this Whiteface pre-race show with Chris Kilmurray.

How Mille Johnset Fought Her Way Back to the Podium

This week, I’m joined by Norwegian downhill racer, Mille Johnset. After making a big team move for the 2025 season, Mille’s year didn’t start the way she’d hoped. Early struggles left her searching for form and confidence. But Mille’s resilience and hard work paid off, and she came back fighting, delivering an incredible 3rd place at the World Cup in Andorra. We talk about her journey from skiing in Norway to racing bikes at the highest level, the challenges of being the only girl in her category growing up, what she learned at the Atherton Academy, and how she’s finding her way in the elite ranks. It’s an honest look at the ups and downs of pro racing, the importance of support networks, and the mindset needed to turn things around. So sit back, hit play, and enjoy this episode with Mille Johnset.

You can also watch this episode on YouTube here.

You can follow Mille on Instagram @millejohnset.
