Don't Know Her?
Alicia Silverstone | E70 | Clueless, Batman & Robin, The Crush, Reptile
Would we miss the opportunity to talk about Alicia Silverstone on the podcast? Ugh, as if!! We wrap up our miniseries, predicting future Oscar nominees by discussing the 90’s teen movie icon. Alongside the unmissable Clueless (Amy Heckerling, 1995) we take in some of Alicia’s other noteworthy roles throughout the episode. From a mixed bag of 90s flicks with The Crush (Alan Shapiro, 1993), Batman & Robin (Joel Schumacher, 1997), Blast From The Past (Hugh Wilson, 1999) and more recent works like The Killing Of A Sacred Deer (Yorgos Lanthimos, 2017) and Reptile (Grant Singer, 2023). Don't Know Her?
John Magaro | E69 | Past Lives, First Cow, Carol, The Big Short, Showing Up
Sixty-nine episodes in and John Magaro may be the best example of a Don’t Know Her? actor... We had seen him in the likes of Orange Is the New Black (2015-2019), Carol (Todd Haynes, 2015) and The Big Short (Adam McKay, 2015) but hadn’t properly noticed him until First Cow (Kelly Reichardt, 2019) and Past Lives (Celine Song, 2023). And wow! His soulful performances are the stuff of magic and we are still surprised how John (along with his co-stars Greta Lee and Teo Yoo) were not Oscar nominated for their work. Join us as we go to the start of John’s career starring alongside Jodie Foster in The Brave One (Neil Jordan, 2007) and award-winning lead performance in Not Fade Away (David Chase, 2012) though to Past Lives. Harris Dickinson | E68 | Beach Rats, Triangle of Sadness, Scrapper, Maleficent 2, The Iron Claw
It’s time to turn our attention to a real rising star… Harris Dickinson. In our third episode of our miniseries predicting future Oscar nominees, Harris felt apt to discuss given his eclectic film work and hotly anticipated upcoming projects… Still being a relatively new face in cinema does not prevent him giving us plenty to chat about…. Throughout the episode we focus on Beach Rats (Eliza Hittman, 2017), Postcards From London (Steve McLean, 2018), Triangle Of Sadness (Ruben Östlund, 2022), Where The Crawdads Sing (Olivia Newman, 2022), Scrapper (Charlotte Regan, 2023) and The Iron Claw (Sean Durkin, 2023). We’re sure that his career will continue to flourish and we’ll have much more to talk about down the line, hopefully with Oscar nominations in tow. Follow us on social media to stay updated! Get ready to dive into the wonderfully enigmatic world of Aubrey Plaza! In our second episode predicting future Oscar nominees, Aubrey felt like an obvious choice. She’s got it all - the talent, the charm, and a whole raft of underappreciated films/performances to make her feel overdue for voting bodies. It’s all a matter of the time. We hope. It's time to celebrate two legends.

As Michael (our lovely co-host and producer) celebrates his birthday, he wanted to focus an episode on one his absolute favourite actors... Kristin Scott Thomas!

Kristin is our second official 'Dame' for the podcast but somehow she never seems to get the appreciation of her contemporaries. Not here! Join us as we cover Kristin's film career including Four Wedding And A Funeral (Mike Newell, 1994), her Oscar-nominated performance in The English Patient (Anthony Minghella, 1996), Keeping Mum (Niall Johnson, 2005), I’ve Loved You So Long (Philippe Claudel, 2008), Only God Forgives (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2013) and Military Wives (Peter Cattaneo, 2019).

Beyond this we look into the future and dream up some roles we would love to see Kristin get the opportunity to tackle. We hope you all can come away with as much love for Kristin as we have and maybe discover a few gems along the way to add to your watchlists.

Don't Know Her?
Kelly Reilly | E63 | Calarvy, Flight, A Haunting in Venice, Eden Lake, Mrs Henderson Presents, Pride & Prejudice

Let’s get everyone talking about Kelly Reilly!

Kelly is a performer who clearly has a lot of industry respect, racking up many noteworthy credits. But where these roles felt primed to launch her to lofty heights, things never quite lined up as we’d imagine for someone who feels destined for big things.

In this career retrospective, we take on some of Kelly’s film highlights to discuss along the way: Pride & Prejudice (Joe Wright, 2005), Mrs Henderson Presents (Stephen Frears, 2005), Eden Lake (James Watkins, 2008), Sherlock Holmes and it’s sequel A Game Of Shadows (Guy Ritchie, 2009 & 2011), Flight (Robert Zemeckis, 2012), Calvary (John Michael McDonagh, 2014), 10x10 (Suzi Ewing, 2018) and A Haunting In Venice (Kenneth Branagh, 2023).

Having proven her prowess many times, we are holding out for that major moment which will give her the opportunity to dazzle us all. To help manifest those opportunities we have come up with some ideas of our own to share with you all.

TRIGGER WARNING: Discussion around clerical abuse in Calvary

Eva Mendes | E62 | Hitch, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Holy Motors, The Place Beyond the Pines, Last Night, The Other Guys, The Women

Let's talk about...Eva Mendes.

Our host Scott has been eager to focus on Eva's career since the start of the podcast and FINALLY here we are... And what an interesting filmography to reflect on!

There's her roles alongside questionable cops in Training Day (Antoine Fuqua, 2001), The Other Guys (Adam McKay, 2010) and Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans (Werner Herzog, 2009) AND questionable fellas in Hitch (Andy Tennant, 2005), The Place Beyond The Pines (Derek Cianfrance, 2012), Holy Motors (Leos Carax, 2012) and Ghost Rider (Mark Steven Johnson, 2007).  AND then there's quesitonable ladies in The Women (Diane English, 2008).

So she may have been somewhat pigeonholed but there is something undeniable about Eva on the big screen.

And should she decide to make a return to acting, we have dreamt up some suggestions to share with you all. So come listen to us discuss all of this and more on our Eva Mendes edition.

Don't Know Her?
Harvey Fierstein | E61 | Torch Song Trilogy, Mrs. Doubtfire, Independence Day, Bros, Death to Smoochy

Harvey Fierstein!! A name (and a voice) that will conjure up great feelings of affection to those familiar with him.

He is a monumental figure in theatre - with a plethora of awards to back it up - and he helped pave the way for queer representation in Hollywood, but where are the film roles??

He will be known to most for his memorable turns as Frank, the make-up artist who turns his brother into the infamous Scottish nanny in Mrs. Doubtfire (Chris Columbus, 1993) or perhaps as Marty, the frantic cable company manager in Independence Day (Roland Emmerich, 1996). But it is Harvey's work in Torch Song Trilogy (Paul Boggart, 1988) that provides his crowning film achievement and gives him a rare leading role.

Join us for this Harvey love-fest where we reflect on his career, queer representation in Hollywood and much more!

Ira Sachs | E60 | Passages, Frankie, Little Men, Love Is Strange, Married Life, Keep the Lights On, Delta

Why are more people not celebrating Ira Sachs?

That question led to this episode where we reflect on a truly independent filmmaker who has worked with many recognisable faces (such as Pierce Brosnan, John Lithgow, Rachel McAdams and Ben Whishaw) yet has never quite had his moment in the limelight himself.

Ira has carved out his own brand of storytelling with films such as Married Life (2007), Keep the Lights On (2012), Love Is Strange (2014) and Passages (2023). It's a fascinating filmography and we can't wait for more.

Join us as we reflect on Ira's film career and dream about this future projects...

Miriam Margolyes | E55 | The Age of Innocence, Harry Potter, Romeo + Juliet, Ladies in Lavender, Babe, James and the Giant Peach...

Join us to celebrate a truly one-of-a-kind performer, the legend that is Miriam Margolyes. Miriam is now known to many for her candidTV moments, regaling us all with her wildly memorable anecdotes. So for our pride celebration we couldn’t resist dipping into the film catalogue of this queer icon. To a generation of us she will have first captured our attention as Professor Sprout in Harry Potter and The Chamber Of Secrets (Chris Columbus, 2002) and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 (David Yates, 2011). To others it will have been as The a nurse in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet (1996) or Mrs. Mingott in Martin Scorsese’s The Age Of Innocence (1993). We loved talking about these films alongside Ladies In Lavender (Charles Dance, 2004) and Little Dorrit (Christine Edzard, 1987).
