Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Bonus Episode 43: That is Why You Stay With the Tour (The Savages Animation)
It’s time for one of our many bonus episodes this season! We are joined by our good friend and official/unofficial fifth Watcher in the Fourth Dimension, Alan Siler, as we watch the not-so-recently animated story in Doctor Who, The Savages.   Join us as we spend way too much time discussing how we watched this and what other things we listened to prepare for this episode, commenting on the fact that we don’t, in fact, hate Dodo as much as we all remember, Julie and Reilly waxing poetic about what a wonderful score we got to listen to, and finally, our love of smashing things just like they did in The Who. The only problem is that most of us don’t feel like heading back into the Davidson era after this adventure.   If you would like to watch along with us, you can get this on physical media from Amazon UK and Amazon US   Other media mentioned in this episode*: Looney Tunes – The Platinum Collection (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3Aov8z7 | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3nRkM7w) Star Trek: The Original Series: The Complete Series (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3aifha7 | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/2YtSYvx) Lost in Space: The Complete Classic Series (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3m44ffy | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3yQVHfQ) The James Bond Collection (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3FWn6kg | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3DQB4lR) Jurassic Park (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3x3z6hQ | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3rk2JIj) The Lord of the Rings: Motion Picture Trilogy (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3nfEjMU | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3jwU4hv)   Finally, you can also follow us and interact with us on Facebook and Instagram. Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Episode 156: Captain Wrack's Rack (Enlightenment)
The Black Guardian Trilogy comes to an end in Enlightenment with a space race on Edwardian-inspired ships, where a dominatrix threatens Turlough, a creepy Eternal hits on Tegan, and the Black and White Guardians end as they started this three-story run: disappointingly. Still, it gives Anthony an opportunity to utter: “step on me, Mommy!” Just wow.   Unsurprisingly, we discuss the sartorial choices of the two Guardians (and which ones Reilly and Anthony will respectively cosplay), how “Officer Creepy” made Julie want to take a shower, the joys of sailing ships in space, the correct pronunciation of “buoy,” Captain Wrack’s rack (obviously), and how Nietzsche fits into all this… and speaking of philosophy, we have a rousing debate on the ethics of throwing an Eternal into the cold vacuum of space…   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find this story available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). If you’re a little old fashioned and prefer physical media (like our very own Anthony), you can also find it on the Doctor Who Season 20 Blu Ray box set from Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3VyxIPe) and Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3V2IL34)   Other media mentioned in this episode*: Mystery Science Theater 3000 – The Essentials (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3NqZRTi | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3DbPUo5) Max Headroom: The Complete Series (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3Lhicpm | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/4nvIYHC) Eternals (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/47hEUGi | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/4qDKgTI) Star Trek: The Original Series: The Complete Series (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3aifha7 | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/2YtSYvx) Treasure Planet (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3JBltz8 | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3LmZEnn) The Dark Knight Trilogy (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/4oioiUR | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/48QSy4q) Caligula: The Ultimate Cut (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/47SQvw9 | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3VrVVa8) Rosemary’s Baby (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3E6Rmaq | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3vC2SHV) The Simpsons (Disney+: http://www.disneyplus.com) The Bible (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/4awKvII | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/4hwnYOE) The Wind from the Sun (includes Sunjammer), by Arthur C. Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Bonus Episode 42: Zombie Bites Are Rarely Consensual (The Gorgon + The Blood on Satan's Claw)
Welcome, once again, to our annual house of horror special!! This year, we kickoff with, yet again, another Hammer Film. This time, we’re covering The Gorgon, featuring Peter Cushing and the wonderful treasure that is Patrick Troughton. We then move onto The Blood on Satan’s Claw, featuring the lovely Wendy Padbury and a somewhat subdued Anthony Ainley.    Join us as we discuss Diana’s inability to recognize actors when they either sport crazy mustaches or wear spectacularly poor wigs, Julie’s inability to recognize famous rock stars, Anthony’s best one-word review of “Meh”, and Reilly’s new job of pre-screening films for our specials for obvious reasons. Additionally, please let us know if we need yet another running metric for “the Diana uncomfortable count”.   If you would like to watch along with us, The Gorgon is available to stream on Plex (https://bit.ly/48IBlKt) and on physical media from Amazon US (https://amzn.to/430bw4N) and Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/4qti8Ti). Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Episode 155: I'll Take the Disease, Please (Terminus)
Join us this episode as we ask the big question: How does the Big Bang happen because of something that happens after the Big Bang? See if we ever find out as we discuss the second story of the Black Guardian trilogy, Terminus.   It should come as no surprise that this story garnered some strong feelings from our crew. Did Anthony really want to rewrite almost all interactions and plot regarding the Doctor and his companions? Absolutely. And did Reilly have lots of thoughts regarding redheads in this story? Seems so. But nothing beats Diana and Julie’s horror in the treatment of Hansen’s disease. Honestly, we really did not need a leper spaceship. Oh, and Reilly might have annoyed Anthony in his sleeping through his behind-the-scenes section.   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find this story available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). If you’re a little old fashioned and prefer physical media (like our very own Anthony), you can also find it on the Doctor Who Season 20 Blu Ray box set from Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3VyxIPe) and Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3V2IL34)   Other media mentioned in this episode*: Community – The Complete Series (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3hPClB0 | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/39hGzwz) Barbarella (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/4nabKxq | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/4qiZz4g) Futurama – Seasons 1-8 (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3jfbkaQ | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3aQeMUL) Alien (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3nbhOZt | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3BX7I4X) Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Complete Series (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3JX2A4F | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/35wGdnA) Bram Stoker’s Dracula (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3n7Fn5I | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3pk4iFM) Blake’s 7 – The Complete Collection (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/2Zh7045 | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/39luyGI) Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3yWEhzi | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3HoBlyr) Don Quixote, by Cervantes (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3vKVfPl | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3B8wxcI)   Finally, you can also follow us and interact with us on Facebook and Instagram. Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Episode 154: 2 Brigs, 1 Ship (Mawdryn Undead)
We kick off the Black Guardian trilogy with a new companion joining the TARDIS, the return of the Brigadier, and the return of the Black Guardian (on whose head they’ve inexplicably put a dead bird!), as we discuss Mawdryn Undead (or, to translate it from the Welsh “Dead Man Undead”!)   Join us as we make immediate judgements on Turlough, discuss how the story plays with time in a way that pre-dates Moffat by 20-odd years, question the Black Guardian’s sartorial choices, ponder why the Brigadier remembers Harry Sullivan but not Liz, Jo, or Sarah Jane, while Julie asks “why is the moustache gone?”. And don’t miss Anthony teaching the crew about corporal punishment in British schools!   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find this story available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Episode 153: Gettin' Stoned on that Snake Venom! (Snakedance)
It’s Kinda 2: Electric Boogaloo – or as it’s better known to most people… Snakedance! Beyond the return of the Mara, we get the return of good ol’ themes of colonialism, complete with a spoiled brat heir, a difficult and ignorant historian, and a snake-oil salesman who gets his comeuppance (ironically, at the hands of snake-being!)!   Join us as we discuss what the Mara are (and how RTD has corrupted that idea), to what extent Lon was actually possessed by the Mara, how Elisabeth Sladen’s husband (Brian Miller) bears a striking resemblance to Jared Harris, how J.K. Rowling may have taken some inspiration from this story, and the absolute simplicity of the plot. Additionally, Anthony challenges Reilly to cosplay as Lon.   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find this story available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Episode 152: Not Angry, Just Very Disappointed (Arc of Infinity)
We're kicking-off Season 20 with Arc of Infinity! This story features Time Lords doing what Time Lords do best, the return of Omega and introduction of his mutant turkey/pterodactyl thing, and some traipsing around Amsterdam. It sounds like it should be quite good. But will the Watchers think that it’s the sort of bang that the season should start with – one that caused by anti-matter and matter colliding?   Join us as we discuss our total disdain for the planet Gallifrey and Time Lord society, our love of Action Hero Nyssa, the brain slugs from Futurama, how the Castellan and Commander Maxil seem to be aware of the narrative structure of a Doctor Who story, and how President Borusa is apparently very susceptible to phishing. We also delve into the question of “what is the Matrix?” – because the last time we saw it, it certainly wasn’t… whatever the heck we see in this story.   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find this story available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Episode 151: Unnecessarily Gross (Season 19 Retrospective)
We have finally made our way through the entirety of Season 19, the first run of Peter Davidson as the Doctor. You all know what that means!!! It’s time for our customary season retrospective, in which we look back at the entire season, using a blend of awards, metrics, and questions from our friends on social media to make our thoughts known… And man, do we make our thoughts known this time around. As always, this was a lot of fun for us to do so we hope that you enjoy listening to this as much as we did making it.   Join us as we discuss whether or not Reilly owes our listeners drink when they purposefully try to gross out Diana by using her “favourite” Doctor Who phrase (don’t worry, we won’t spell it out here), who actually votes for Adric’s death as being the best moment of the season, who should sport a carrot on their lapel (Troughton or Baker), and how we all want a TARDIS crew who just LIKE each other. And of course, please let us know if pairing up the Dickie (awarded to Bidmead) with the Cumming just made sense this season, or no.    If you would like to watch along with us, you can find the entirety of the season available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Bonus Episode 41: Old School Propaganda (Spare Parts)
This episode, bear with us as we meander our way through our discussion of Spare Parts. Who knew we needed to discuss fake commercials and who may secretly be Hitler while commenting on such a good Big Finish story.   Join us as we discuss our understanding of jaded scientists drinking wine to get through the day and our annoyance of a whiny teenage boy who was so susceptible to propaganda, wishing to become a cyberman. Diana and Julie both bemoan the fact that there is no closed captioning, making it impossible to understand some of the cybermen’s voices while Anthony and Reilly enjoy the darkness of the story. Additionally, we have a disagreement between a reverse fanwank and a personal fanwank and the merits of them both.    If you would like to listen along with us, you can find this story available through BigFinish.com (http://bit.ly/4mGSgk7)   Other media mentioned in this episode*: Invasion of the Bodysnatchers (1950s version) (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3AOmslf | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/30FBMnR) Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1970s version) (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3HxgH4L | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/47hJBAv) Blake’s 7 – The Complete Collection (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/2Zh7045 | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/39luyGI) The Polar Express (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/45SjONR | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/45RByZQ) Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man Trilogy (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3DfBEKR | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/35e47UV) Robocop (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3JgAK84 | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/4oznw6F) Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3ptuM83 | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3BSULsQ) Secret Hitler (game) (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/46ZxuaX | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/4lqpGm5)    Finally, you can also follow us and interact with us on Facebook and Instagram. Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Episode 150: An Excessive Dose of Mucinex (Time-Flight)
Don’t you just love an insane scheme by the Master? Especially when it involves disguising himself as a horrendous racial stereotype when he has no reason to be in disguise at all? Oh, and we have some wonderful product placement for Heathrow Airport and Concorde. And this story is *somehow* the Season 19 finale. That’s right -we’re talking about Time-Flight!   Join us as we discuss the brown-ness of the 1980s, whether the episode takes place in the Jurassic or Pleistocene era (it’s the former – Reilly’s right, Anthony’s wrong), why the Master feels the need to disguise himself, the TARDIS repair hour, and the rather questionable behaviour and motives of the Professor. Anthony finds a way to sneak in some Tinie Tempah lyrics without a single other member of the cast noticing. Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Episode 149: Jur-Adric Park (Earthshock)
In potentially the biggest story of the Season (somehow even bigger than the Fifth Doctor’s debut in Castrovalva), we have Cybermen! Androids! Gritty troopers and gritty freighter crew! Oh, and we say goodbye to a much loved (lol) companion in what is quite possibly the most dramatic way since… well… the 1960s? Yup, it’s Earthshock!   Join us as we discuss how the designers on Starship Troopers must’ve been huge Doctor Who fans, how the Cybermen seem to have recruited Daft Punk to do their dirty work, their completely bonkers plan, how Captain Briggs is surprisingly enjoyable (even if she was played as if she were your drunken Aunt), and, of course, we have to talk about THE ending of the story. Poor Diana has to say goodbye to Adric – and she may have even shed a tear or two…   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find the this oddity available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Episode 148: Measuring Things in "Adrics" (Black Orchid)
In this episode, we dial in our love for Agatha Christie and Charlotte Brontë, as we discuss Black Orchid. How they were able to pack so much character intertaction AND a self-indulgent cricked match into only two episodes, we will never know.   Join us as we discuss the introduction of our new favourite hero (or villain) in Gurgle Man, Sarah Sutton finally being able to show off her acting chops, the Watchers’ new unit of measure: units of Adrics, and Anthony absolutely having a childhood moment with time spent around trains. Yes, in another life, he must have been a train engineer.   We are so happy that we finally have a happy little TARDIS crew, despite the darker direction of the show. Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Episode 147: Emotionally Unavailable TARDIS Crew (The Visitation)
After the last episode where we all let out many exasperated sighs, the Watchers now let out a great sigh of relief as we discuss The Visitation!! We have finally gotten the companion interaction we deserve, even with Adric remaining a complete waste of carbon.   Join us as we discuss our return back to basics: a simple, grounded story, check. An alien race set to take over Earth, check. And an android, though we’ve never had one so bedazzled before, check. We also get one of the best supporting characters to grace the small screen in a long time, our man Richard Mace! Also, dear listeners, please send us your t-shirt designs so that we too can live in flesh time and I want to talk about chairs paraphernalia.   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find the this oddity available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Episode 146: New Wave Fever Dream (Kinda)
SILENCE!! while we dive into yet another story touching on our dislike for colonialism, but engaging us, however briefly, in our appreciation for fever dreams. That’s right, dear listeners, we’re discussing Kinda this week and hopefully you all have remembered that sleeping near windchimes by yourself can have dire consequences, such as snake tattoos and lipstick teeth.   Join us as we discuss Tegan’s initial relaxed demeanor (including her hair) before all the companions disappear from the plot, create new headcanon for why Hindle becomes completely unhinged, spend way too much time discussing what’s in the box, and ultimately why rubber snakes can just be fun! This podcast episode will either have you pondering the ideas of the id and the ego or wondering when we’ll just give in to looking into the box.   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find the this oddity available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Episode 145: *exasperated sigh* (Four to Doomsday)
This episode, we tackle a story that has been in the bottom quartile in both DWM’s Mighty 200 and 50th Anniversary polls – it’s Four to Doomsday! But, what will the Watchers think? This one goes probably as well as you’d expect…   Join us as we discuss how this story is built like a Hartnell story, Adric turning into an incel, what the guts of the androids are made from, how Monarch is the most affable fascist dictator ever (even being reminiscent of Stephen Fry!), and Julie shows her ignorance of Greek city states (for shame!). Additionally, Diana confesses her immense disgust of the term “flesh time!”   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find the this oddity available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). Episode 144: ...is the Master a Brat? (Castrovalva)
This episode, we finally get ourselves started on the Fifth Doctor era as the Master returns (again) to taunt our new Doctor in Castrovalva… heh heh heh…   Join us as we discuss just how young Peter Davison was when this was made, whether or not Adric was a little TOO excited at being tied up in the Master’s web (or if it’s just the harness), Tegan’s need for “enormous thrust,” Bidmead’s myriad weaknesses, and how the Master THINKS that he’s a dom, but is clearly just a brat and all he wants is kisses (because he DESERVES them!)… this might be our most unhinged episode yet, to be honest.   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find the this oddity available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Episode 143: Brendan is the WORST! (K9 and Company: A Girl's Best Friend)
This episode, we discuss Doctor Who’s very first attempt at a spin-off with the rather questionable K9 and Company: A Girl’s Best Friend! It was certainly a wild ride watching this one, with plenty of witches and honking along the way…   Join us as we discuss THAT theme tune, whether K9 and Sarah Jane are actually a good pairing, whether K9 is put to good use, Brendan being put in a dress, how Simon Pegg clearly saw this story at some point, and why there are apparently so many covens of witches in rural England! We also take some strange influence from Sex and the City on how this story could actually be done well.   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find the this oddity available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Episode 142: Where Are the Women, PHIL!? (Tom Baker Era Retrospective)
As we’ve finally made it to the end of the Tom Baker era (a feat that has taken us close to two-and-a-half years!), we are once again joined by the 5th Watcher, R. Alan Siler, who guides us through our era-spanning retrospective for the longest-running (and arguably most popular) Doctor of all time!   Join us as we discuss the best stories to sum up each Producer during the era, whether RTD and Moffatt are right about non-contemporary/non-human companions (they’re not), whether Tom stayed too long, whether we’d want an eighth season with Tom, and how Diana didn’t read through her contract before joining the show. Of course, we take a look back at the highlights of some of our stats, before Alan guides us through a game of “Would You Rather…?”   Other media mentioned in this episode*: The James Bond Collection (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3FWn6kg | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3DQB4lR) Moonbase 3 (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3xdCVRm | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3Mm13Fv) Star Trek: The Original Series: The Complete Series (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3aifha7 | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/2YtSYvx) Game of Thrones: The Complete Series (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3lRgVWD | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3aQhh9U) Austin Powers Triple Feature (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3G4NQit | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3vuHNyO) Harry Potter: Complete 8-Film Collection (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3SdAHd5 | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3oFjhZh) Looney Tunes – The Platinum Collection (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3Aov8z7 | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3nRkM7w) The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (TV version) (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3G6YCoH | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3m0qOSc)   Finally, you can also follow us and interact with us on Facebook and Instagram. Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Episode 141: The Master Wants Kisses (Season 18 Retrospective)
Another season in the can! Season 18 done and dusted, and you know what that means… it’s time for our customary season retrospective, in which we take a look back at the entirety of the season with our blend of awards, metrics, and questions from our friends on social media. These are always a lot of fun for us to do, and we really hope that you enjoy listening to this as much as we did recording it!   Join us as we discuss how one of the new companions gets the best entrance ever through involuntary manslaughter, Romana’s best (and worst) costumes, the Adric haters’ club, Tegan’s absolutely magnificent way of bursting onto the scene in Logopolis, the general incompetence of our heroes in killing vampires, and how this season creates one absolutely epic piece of fanwank. Of course, we also decide who gets the Dougie and who gets the Dickie, which is never a dull moment!   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find the entirety of this season available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Episode 140: Let Me Speak With Your Manager (Logopolis)
It’s the end, but the moment has been prepared for… (were we ever going to start out this blurb with anything else!?) We finally reach the end of Tom Baker’s seven year tenure on the show with the Master embarking on a bonkers scheme that threatens the entire universe. But one question remains – is Logopolis actually any good!?   Join us as we discuss dressing for job that you want, why Tegan is magnificently annoying in the best way possible, how this story plays into the history of the podcast, the stupidity of some of the Doctor’s plans, how Logopolitan society is based on Kabbalah, how camp the new Master is, and how Adric actually does math. Oh, and Anthony pokes plot holes in the plan to save the universe…   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find this story available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB).
