The Beach Boys’ PET SOUNDS (Part 3, Ep. 220)

Chuck Granata’s book Wouldn’t It Be Nice: Brian Wilson And The Making Of The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds is the ultimate dissection of Brian Wilson’s 1966 masterpiece.  Chuck and I wound up diving so deep into the record, we unfortunately had to seek treatment for the bends…thankfully it was a risk worth taking, as Discograffiti’s Pet Sounds Deep-Dive Series stands as a unique combination of factual obsession and personal connection.  Episode 3 is an examination of everything you’ll ever need to know about the remainder of Pet Sounds’ Side 1: “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder),” “I’m Waiting For The Day,” “Let’s Go Away For Awhile,” and “Sloop John B.”

Here’s just a few of the many things that Chuck discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • Brian Wilson’s studio preparation for the production of “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)”;
  • What Brian feels is “the one cut off the album I didn’t really like that much”;
  • The Burt Bacharach song on which Brian had felt he’d subconsciously based “Let’s Go Away For Awhile”;
  • The stunning original intention for the final planned Pet Sounds session, before that date was used to knock out the entire mix of the LP;
  • Brian’s Great Bahamian Folk Song Swindle;
  • A full half-hour interview with Sid Sharp, whose string section played on virtually all of Brian's string dates, including both Pet Sounds and "Good Vibrations” (in The Director’s Cut only);
  • And how both Chuck and I connect with “Don’t Talk,” “I’m Waiting For The Day,” “Let’s Go Away For Awhile,” and “Sloop John B” in a laid-bare, explicitly personal way.

Tony Asher (Part 1) (The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series) (Ep. 219B)

The next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series is Part 1 of Chuck’s chat with Tony Asher, Brian Wilson’s lyrical collaborator on Pet Sounds. Since I didn’t conduct the interview, I can be fully honest in my assessment without fear of reprisal: this is easily the best Tony Asher interview in existence. You won’t want to miss a minute of this multi-part extravaganza. The amount of insight on display is mind-blowing and thoroughly indispensable.  All I can say is: Thank you, Chuck.

Here’s just a few of the many things that Tony discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • A comprehensive verbal tour of Brian and Marilyn’s house on Laurel Way;
  • How Tony knew definitively that he’d gotten far too stoned with Brian at his house one day;
  • Tony’s certainty that he’d introduced Brian to both the bass flute…AND THE THEREMIN;
  • And Brian’s singularly unique judiciousness in booking session musicians.

The Beach Boys’ PET SOUNDS (Part 2, Ep. 219)

Episode 2 is an examination of everything you’ll ever need to know about the first three tracks on Pet Sounds: “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “You Still Believe In Me,” and “That’s Not Me.”

Here’s just a few of the many things that Chuck discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • A brief eulogy for Brian Wilson, as this was our first episode taped after his passing;
  • The jaw-dropping alleged lyrical subtext of “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”;
  • How the opening track deviated from Brian & Tony Asher’s typical collaborative approach;
  • How Brian set out to make two accordions sound like violins;
  • The reason for the appearance of the bicycle horn on “You Still Believe In Me”;
  • The only Pet Sounds track on which Dennis Wilson drummed;
  • An unreleased 15-minute session during which Brian and Tony experiment with piano sounds for the “You Still Believe In Me” backing track (Director’s Cut only);
  • And how both Chuck and I connect with the record’s opening three tracks in a laid-bare, explicitly personal way.

Discograffiti
Hal Blaine (Part 1) (The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series) (Ep. 218B)

The next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series is Part 1 of Chuck’s chat with Brian Wilson’s favorite drummer, legendary studio maestro Hal Blaine. It’s not hard to understand why Brian worked with him so often: Hal claimed to have participated in over 35,000 sessions and 6,000 singles. His drumming is featured on 150 US top 10 hits, 40 of which went to number one. Chuck’s interview with Hal took place while the latter was living in a retirement community, and the tone is definitely “no shits given” by this point. Hal passed away a few years later in 2019, which makes this posthumously released “Chuck Chat” yet another priceless buried treasure.

Here’s just a few of the many things that Hal discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • Hal’s “Strangers In The Night” session with Frank Sinatra, and the classic drum beat from which he cribbed;
  • The early days of the session players which Hal liked to call “The Wrecking Crew”;
  • Getting started with Phil Spector, and how Phil liked to work;
  • Meeting Don Randi;
  • The beautiful gesture that Brian Wilson demonstrated to his friend while Hal was in the midst of experiencing the suicidal terror of his divorce.

Graham Nash discusses Crosby, Stills, & Nash (the debut album, 1969) (Ep. 218)

Here’s just a few of the many things that Graham discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • The reasons why he split from The Hollies (Director’s Cut only);
  • A recounting of the very first time he met Crosby & Stills, plus the fateful question they posed to him;
  • Exactly who was Captain Manyhands, and why he was so crucial to the success of that debut album;
  • The several identities behind the amalgam of personalities Crosby sung about in “Guinnevere”;
  • The very first time Graham met Joni Mitchell;
  • And an in-depth deep dive on every song that comprises the Crosby, Stills, & Nash LP!

Listen: linktr.ee/discograffiti

Wild Tales: The Graham Nash Interview Series tackles every last release the great Graham Nash ever had a hand in creating, including CSN, CSNY, C&N, and his solo career, detailing a history almost too crazy to be believed. His honesty is profoundly refreshing, and overall this series is a Mt. Olympus climb which explores the Aquarian age in all its majesty and chaos. It has already overtaken my life in so my ways…and it’s my hope that it does the same to yours.

Discograffiti
Bill Wagner, Manager of The Four Freshmen & Brian Wilson's Mentor (Ep. 217B, Sneak Peek)

The next entry in the Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series makes for a perfect pairing with last week’s—it’s Chuck’s chat with Brian Wilson’s early mentor Bill Wagner, The Four Freshmen’s manager. This extremely lucid conversation offers a one-after-the-other cavalcade of precious insights, from the first visit to Bill’s office by a green-behind-the-ears Brian in 1958 to the ineffable sadness of later years. Bill passed away back in 2011 (only three months before Ross left us), which makes this posthumously released interview another priceless buried treasure.

Here’s just a few of the many things that Bill discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • A description of Brian’s initial 1958 office visit, and how he decided to go about impressing the manager;
  • Candid impressions of Murry Wilson, including an embarrassing tale about Murry’s hijacked Capitol building tour;
  • Fascinating insights into Brian’s initial home recording dalliances;
  • A recounting of a truly scary conversation he shared with Brian in 1966 about his experiments with LSD;
  • And the truly upsetting final conversation the two men shared.

There’ll be a short sneak peak running publicly for free, but the entirety of this podcast will only be accessible on the Major Tier of Discograffiti’s Patreon. Don’t miss it, or you’ll only be getting part of the story. Get it as a one-off, get the full series, or better yet just subscribe.

Discograffiti
The Beach Boys’ PET SOUNDS (Part 1, Ep. 217)

Who better to tackle Discograffiti’s epic, multi-episode Deep-Dive into The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds—my second favorite album of all time behind only Smile—than the scholarly yet super-cool Petsoundsologist Chuck Granata, whose book Wouldn’t It Be Nice: Brian Wilson And The Making Of The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds is the ultimate piece of work on the LP?  Chuck and I dived so deep we actually had to seek treatment for the bends, but as you’ll hear it was worth every second.  Episode 1 is the story of the record from soup to nuts, without an examination of its specific songs…which is coming in episodes 2 through 6.

Here’s just a few of the many things that Chuck discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • How an unassuming advertising jingle writer named Tony Asher somehow wound up collaborating with the greatest American songwriter on the planet on what many now consider to be the greatest LP of all time;
  • Brian’s drug experimentation back in 1966, which he used to jog his creative process;
  • The daily collaborative routine that Brian and Tony enjoyed;
  • Whether or not Pet Sounds was intended by Brian to be an honest-to-goodness concept album (Director’s Cut only);
  • An examination of the initial rumblings of group infighting that later proved to be fundamental in toppling the band;
  • The Beach Boys’ process of learning vocals literally directly before singing them;
  • And the long game of the record’s success, which began with a comparative tanking.

ROSS BARBOUR OF THE FOUR FRESHMEN (The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series) (Ep. 216B)

We kick off the Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series at the very beginning…it’s Chuck’s conversation with one of Brian Wilson’s most towering influences, Ross Barbour of The Four Freshmen!  His father Murry took Brian to see the legendary harmony group when he was 14, and he got the opportunity to meet them. The concert and that meeting had a profound effect on young Brian, who said, “My voice was shivering as I was talking to them…I was so in awe of them. It was one of the biggest moments in my life. [Their song] ‘It’s a Blue World’ made me cry. I learned to make four-part harmonies from the Four Freshmen.” Russ passed away back in 2011, which makes this posthumously released interview a particularly priceless buried treasure.

Here’s just a few of the many things that Ross discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • The genetic uniquenesses that combine to make family harmony an inimitable feat;
  • Ross’s fantasy of developing a barbershop harmony supercomputer;
  • How Brian Wilson built upon The Four Freshmen sound for The Beach Boys;
  • How the group achieved the sparkling sound of their Capitol recordings;
  • From where Ross feels the melancholy in Brian’s music originated;
  • And what it felt like to ultimately be passed over in favor of groups like The Beach Boys who wouldn’t even exist without The Four Freshmen.

MARILYN WILSON-RUTHERFORD & GINGER BLAKE OF THE HONEYS, The Beach Boys' Sister Group (Pt 2, Ep. 216)

In Part 2 of my amazing discussion with two-thirds of The Honeys, Marilyn, Ginger, and I work our way through some wildly emotional terrain, including what it was like to share lives with a creative genius while he was operating at his peak.

Here’s just a few of the many things that Marilyn & Ginger discuss with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • How Marilyn felt about Brian’s Smile-era decor in their Laurel Way home;
  • Their thoughts on the Smile-era music, not to mention their ever-evolving lifestyle;
  • What it was like being produced by Murry;
  • The story behind American Spring, and the wonderful music that act produced;
  • The Honeys’ two latter-day LPs;
  • Their late-1960s singles, and the slew of wonderful guest appearances on other artists’ records (Director’s Cut only);
  • And how the ladies feel about Pet Sounds lyric collaborator Tony Asher.

THE BEACH BOYS’ PET SOUNDS TIMELINE: A BRIAN WILSON DIARY (with author/expert Chuck Granata & Fred Vail) (Ep. 215B, Sneek Peak)

Recorded only two days before the great man’s passing, this audiobook-style episode is a Brian Wilson diary that covers the 27 sessions it took to accomplish one of his great works, a span of six months that kicks off at the moment in December 1965 when he first heard The Beatles’ Rubber Soul and vowed to make the greatest rock record of all time, to Pet Sounds’ release in May 1966. I’m joined by the world’s foremost Petsoundsologist Chuck Granata, author of the incredible book Wouldn’t It Be Nice: Brian Wilson And The Making Of The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds. This episode features a critical cameo by the great Fred Vail.

Here’s just a few of the many things that Chuck discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • The Pickwick Bookstore acid flashback that inadvertently provided the initial inspiration for Pet Sounds;
  • The unlikely figure who first introduced Van Dyke Parks to Brian Wilson;
  • The only song on the record that features The Beach Boys playing instruments;
  • The record company’s real motivation for releasing “Sloop John B” as a single;
  • How Brian countered record company disinterest in a classic meeting held at Capital HQ;
  • The importance of Bruce Johnston’s UK Pet Sounds unveiling;
  • And a beautiful cameo by Fred Vail describing the atmosphere at the mastering session, which was only attended by Fred and Brian’s wife Marilyn.

MARILYN WILSON-RUTHERFORD & GINGER BLAKE OF THE HONEYS, The Beach Boys' Sister Group (Part 1, Ep. 215)

Here’s just a few of the many things that Marilyn & Ginger discuss with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • What the group was like before they bumped into Brian Wilson;
  • The amazing way station for rock and roll talent that was the Rovell household, and the ways in which Brian fundamentally changed the family for the better;
  • How Marilyn feels about Mike Love’s current touring version of The Beach Boys;
  • An in-depth discussion of their first few classic 45s;
  • And a talk about how much of an inspiration Marilyn was in Brian’s music and lyrics.

Recorded just after granddaughter Lola Bonfiglio made it onto American Idol, but before Brian’s recent passing, this delightful yet intensive 4-hour interview with two-thirds of The Beach Boys’ Sister Group—cousins Ginger and Marilyn—covers all the projects both under Marilyn’s former husband Brian Wilson’s guiding hand and the records made of their own volition.  If you mistakenly thought they were just a female knock-off act, then prepare yourself for a glorious education.

  • How Robert Plant became instrumental in sparking a Spence family reunion;
  • Skip’s final music project, Eternity’s Gate;

Wouldn't It Be Nice If Chuck Granata Gave Me All His PET SOUNDS INTERVIEWS? (Episode 214)

Meet Chuck Granata. Chuck’s written the only tome anyone needs about Pet Sounds, entitled Wouldn’t It Be Nice: Brian Wilson And The Making Of The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds. His timing in climbing aboard the Discograffiti train is splendid, indeed: his entrance has allowed this season to balloon to gargantuan proportions. Simply put, it will be the most in-depth investigation of a single record ever enacted in the history of music.

Here’s just a few of the many things that Chuck discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • The origin of Chuck’s book;
  • The ludicrous amount of incredible interviews that Chuck conducted for his book;
  • The crazy road trip we took together to retrieve his tapes, which were in storage 10 hours away across the US;
  • And a look ahead at Season 3 of “The Beach Boys: And Your Dreams Come True”.

GRAHAM NASH ON PET SOUNDS BY THE BEACH BOYS (Ep. 213)

Welcome to Season 3 of “The Beach Boys: And Your Dreams Come True!” This season focuses solely on Pet Sounds, and stands as the most in-depth investigation of a single record ever enacted in Discograffiti history.  The Beach Boys’ 11th LP changed a lot of lives, not least of which the man who brought his effortlessly breezy pop charm to The Hollies, Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, and his own solo career.  In fact, this episode stands as the launching point of a huge Graham Nash series—his longest interview of all time—which will air concurrently with this unprecedented Pet Sounds showcase.

Here’s just a few of the many things that Graham discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • Why Graham’s journey to achieve greatness may have begun with The Hollies’ terrible attempt at “Marrakesh Express”;
  • A peek into Crosby, Stills, & Nash’s formation;
  • The incredible method The Hollies used to test out their final mixes (Director’s Cut only);
  • The frustrating story behind the lost CSN album Human Highway (Director’s Cut only);
  • Why it was felt that the chaos-evoking Neil Young was an essential ad to the group (Director’s Cut only);
  • Whether Graham is ultimately a Beach Boys fan or a Brian Wilson fan;
  • The songs in which Graham felt he came closest to the vulnerable intimacy of Pet Sounds;
  • And how important LSD was to the person that Graham became.

212B. SNEAK PEEK OF MOBY GRAPE'S SKIP SPENCE PART 4 WITH BIOGRAPHER CAM COBB (WEIRD HERALD, PACHUCO, & THE DOOBIE BROTHERS) (GRAPE EXPECTATIONS EPISODE 10)

Grape Expectations’ Episode 10 will hip you to one of the greatest lost psych bands of the 1960s, as we explore the late 1960s-early 1970s in Skip’s life, a time when he gave it his best shot acting as Dad to four kids when he just couldn’t hack it, as the pull of the lifestyle got the better of him...but not before helping to assemble one of the most successful bands of the 1970s.

Here’s just a few of the many things that Cam discusses with Discograffiti in Part 4 of our discussion:

  • The batshit insane drug called “LBJ” that Skip may possibly have taken when he had his breakdown;
  • The first wave of Grape acolytes who found their way west to search for Skip and the gang…and with whom Skip played matchmaker, creating a band by accident that wound up practically owning the 1970s;
  • A side deep-dive on Weird Herald, Billy Dean Andrus’s band that existed concurrently with Moby Grape’s initial run, plus a track-by-track rundown of their recently released masterpiece, Just Yesterday;
  • And the short-lived band in which Skip played with Billy Dean Andrus called Pachuco.

212. MOBY GRAPE’S PETER LEWIS PART 3 (GRAPE EXPECTATIONS EPISODE 9)

Welcome to Part 3, and the final installment of my conversation with Peter Lewis, a one-of-a-kind discussion that leapfrogs incessantly from one shocking revelation to the next. Here’s just a few of the many things that Peter discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • That time he took psilocybin with some hit men;
  • How he was hoodwinked into participating in the 20 Granite Creek project;
  • Robert Plant’s favorite Moby Grape song;
  • What he did during his 1971-1977 self-ordained “Wandering Phase”;
  • An almost unbearably intense retelling of the Skip Spence monastery exorcism tale;
  • The Moby Grape album that was mainly an excuse to vacuum up as much cocaine as was humanly possible;
  • And a full rundown of the circumstances behind The Real Potato’s shelving (Director’s Cut only).

211B. MOBY GRAPE’S PETER LEWIS PART 2 (SNEAK PEEK OF GRAPE EXPECTATIONS EPISODE 8)

Grape Expectations’ Episode 8 is the true turning point of the series, a breathless conversation with Moby Grape guitarist/songwriter Peter Lewis which goes to great lengths to illustrate the point a man must reach where it becomes preferable to move furniture for his grandma as a side hustle in lieu of recording a single additional note with his musical soulmates.

211. MOBY GRAPE’S DON STEVENSON PART 3 (GRAPE EXPECTATIONS EPISODE 7)

Welcome to Part 3, and the final installment of my conversation with Don Stevenson, in which we cover the expansive era of 1969 to the present. Don says this will be the very last time he’ll be talking about his time in Moby Grape, so you absolutely will not want to miss this.

Here’s just a few of the many things that Don discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • How Skip Spence’s Oar really got made, not the mythological pajama-wearing motorcycle ride to Nashville that’s been bandied about for years;
  • The difficulty of Bob Mosley’s breakdown occurring in the much larger shadow of Skip’s concurrent mental problems;
  • The reasons why their final album, 2010’s The Real Potato, was shelved (Director’s Cut only);
  • How their disastrous 1971 gig at The Fillmore East really went down;
  • The unimaginable horrors that occurred during the making of 20 Granite Creek;
  • And a track-by-track deep-dive on Truly Fine Citizen, 20 Granite Creek, Live Grape, Legendary Grape, and several other records Moby Grape made during this period!
