Did Bad Bunny Just Say He Supports Puerto Rico's Independence? Our Nuevayol Reaction
Everyone’s reacting to Bad Bunny’s new video “Nuevayol”. The influencers, the media, the fans — they’re breaking down the visuals, the aesthetics, the vibes. But here’s the thing: most of them are missing — or avoiding — the deeper message. “Nuevayol” is a political statement. It’s a protest. It’s an emotional, quiet, but powerful act of advocacy for Puerto Rico’s independence, a highlight of the Puerto Rican and for Latinx culture as well as sending the message to our community not trust fake apologies. And it’s time we start saying that out loud. In this episode, we’re digging into what Nuevayol really represents — from the visuals and the lyrics to the cultural symbolism behind it all — and why so many voices in the mainstream are afraid to call it what it is: a direct challenge to colonialism, displacement, and silence. We use Bad Bunny as a role model to discuss how artists need to be bold and true to their believes by using their platforms to advocate for just and fair causes when seeing injustice being done. For this discussion, we have the director of Flamboyán Theater, Jon Marcantoni.  Here some of Bad Bunny's songs we make reference through the episode: Nuevayol La Mudanza LaVelita Afilando los Cuchillos Jingle Jennifer Mentirosa Let’s get into it.
