JOHN HANNON - REST IN PEACE. It was May 7th 2021 that the sad news of his death became known. This is just a repost of DBL#8 initially published February 20th 2021. it's probably my favourite episode, some great insights, reflections & stories.
DBL#22 - NEIL TURPIN - 21st CENTURY.
This is the second part of the conversation with lifelong drummer Neil which brings things up to date with his solo work and new band OBJECTIONS.
The past 20 years are the focus here so the contrast between more 'session based' playing against personal work is discussed. Please listen to the first part in episode #21 if you want the full background on what happened in the 90s regarding his formative bands (Bilge Pump, Solanki, Baby Harp Seal etc).

DBL#21 - NEIL TURPIN
This is a part one which is focused on discussing the music that he was part of during the 90s. As an active drummer for the past few decades now Neil has been involved in a lot of bands who evolved from the mid 90s Leeds 6 scene. Groups like Polaris and Baby Harp Seal and the longest running of which he is best known for would be Bilge Pump. There is also talk about the smaller projects like Diesel Versus Steam and Solanki who also provided the perfect fit for intro music to this show from the first episode. There is a part 2 of this conversation which brings everything up to date on the past 20 years of his musical career. Please rate, review, subscribe and share to anyone who may be interested... thanks!

Get ready to expect lots of talk about D.I.Y. touring and playing in the groups One by One, Health Hazard, Suffer, John Holmes... then his switch to tour managing for the bands Dropdead, Los Crudos, His Hero is Gone, Detestation and Submission Hold. Plenty of the highs and lows are recounted for a pivotal decade in punk/hardcore worldwide.

DBL#19 'Time Travel' w/ Ed Wenn (Dealing With Damage, Stupids, Sink etc). This episode is myself and Chay joined by Ed Shred to discuss some time travel films. More specifically the kind of niche that various paradoxes occur in such as Predestination (2014), Triangle (2009), Time Crimes (2007), Coherence (2013), Primer (2004), Out of Time (2021), ... This was fun to do and Ed (a Sci-fi lover) was hit with some curveballs which we get into. A light hearted discussion about some heavy films and concepts. If you want any music talk skip to the last minute...

DBL#18 - Dave Cochrane (Terminal Cheesecake, Greymachine, GOD, Sweet Tooth, Head of David...).
Dave Cochrane has been all over many different projects as a bass player since the mid 80s in Birmingham. He was briefly in the band ANOREXIA with Mick Harris (Napalm Death, Scorn) before spending time playing in HEAD OF DAVID up until 1989. After leaving that group he was involved in the formation of SWEET TOOTH with Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Jesu etc.). They released a mini album on Earache records in 1990 before dissolving into the avant/jazz/industrial group GOD headed by Kevin Martin (the Bug). This band paired down into the more dub orientated ICE and TECHNO ANIMAL whjch he contributed to in the mid 90s.
Dave also helped out in the very early incarnation of Kevin Martin's THE BUG. The 00s saw him taking a break from actively being in any groups but he was touring bass player for JESU which paved the way for GREYMACHINE with Justin Broadrick & Aaron Turner (Isis). During this time he'd also formed TRANSITIONAL before playing in the band TERMINAL CHEESECAKE which he has done so for the past 10 years now. Dave is an all round great bloke and very funny as you will hear.

Episode #17 - 'Some Newcastle Stuff' part 2 w/ Graham Thompson.
This is a kind of 'case study' of groups I'd had involvement with moving from the fast and chaotic hardcore of ORRIN DEFOREST in late 90s to the formation of the much slower, heavier, doomy vibes of MARZURAAN in the early 00s. Also discussed... learning about production skills and home studio work with the dark ambient drones of R.Y.N. We both look at the involvement in our scene of the time and of course the unavoidable VENOM stories...

DBL#16 - 'Some Newcastle Stuff...' part 1 w/ Graham Thompson. This episode is a slight variation compared to the previous series of more formal interviews. I am joined by friend Graham Thompson who has played in many bands here over the past 20 years such as Jinn, Ultrashitinferno, Grace, Zealots, OZO, Ballpeen etc. Chances are at some point you may have even been in a band with him if you live in the North East, UK. In 2020 he released a project called Sea Ninety where he played guitar, drums, bass and sang. Quite an achievement amongst all his other projects goin on. He also records, mixes, masters and produces with his Sounds Schitty facility!
We talk about probably a universal theme for kids in the 90s getting into music and the hardcore punk scene. From influential early gigs and exposure to the underground scene, also finding the music and collecting records.
How you choose an instrument to play, finding people to be in a band with, playing live, & the venues are discussed.
Please rate, review, subscribe and share this that would be great... and if you want to help support the show you can pick up a cool looking slipmat HERE.

DBL 15 'UNDEAD SOUNDTRACKS'
This is another episode where myself and Chay Lawrence take a shot at discussing some Horror movie soundtracks. There are a load of films to talk about, too many to take in because there was about another hour of recording which was either brainstorming or rambling tangents.
We start with the obvious and look at John Carpenter's scores then Tangerine Dream's contributions, as well as the classic Herzog/Popul Vuh teaming on Nosferatu. There were a number of Soundtracks from the 90s where bands played a huge role in a films visibility like the Crow. The well curated soundtrack for Return of the Living Dead is also discussed as well as obviously, the group Goblin. There's a bunch of other great films we talk about and share some cool anecdotes.

DBL#14: The episode here is a look at film, more specifically the 'Folk Horror' movie genre with Chay Lawrence who played in the bands Bob Tilton, Tribute and Coffin Pricks.
All of his musical life is discussed at length in Episode #9 if you want to hear more about his background. He is also a big fan of the horror genre and October is a good month to discuss this stuff. 'Folk Horror' is usually based around 3 famous Hammer films: Wicker man, Blood on Satan's claw and Witchfinder general. We take things from there and end up with some unusual twists and turns into the 'Found Footage' genre with Hollow (2011), Borderlands (2013) & Crone Wood (2016).
The opportunity to talk about films like this hadn't really arisen until Chay and I talked about things more recently and realised our mutual love for the horror genre. There will hopefully be a more varied output as of this episode because the initial intent a year ago was to be more like a magazine but that has unfortunately drifted.

DBL#13 Vique Martin
The path from being a young zine maker in the early part of the 90s eventually led her to move to America and work at Revelation records in Southern California.
She left that position after 20 years fairly recently to a new home with Pirates Press records who release mainly street punk and oi artists as well as being a broker for record pressing in the US.
Starting in Brighton, Vique moved around the UK turning her Simba zine into a record label and distribution also. I remember ordering records and Simba zines regularly around 96/97 because she always had a great selection during this time.
The first record released was in 1994 and since then stuff was put out by groups such as Greyhouse, Texas is the Reason, Ink & Dagger, Danko Jones, and a number of Swedish groups. The label restarted in the 2010s releasing mainly Louisville bands like Endpoint, Elliott & By the Grace of God. If you are in the US Rev still stock some of the Simba releases that are in print. Vique also promoted tours and drove bands around before leaving the UK for Rev in 1998. She also talks about that experience here..
Her early reading about feminism put her on the path towards being able to deal with the heavily male dominated hardcore scene. She has been putting together a book entitled Chicks Upfront: 'Women in hardcore in the 90s' which should see publication next year. Her first book was a collection of work originally published in the Simba zine.
Listen past the end track if you want to hear another Rev story and her work as a herbalist with Punk Potions.
