Aliona Kardash (*1990 in Sibirien, Russland) ist Dokumentarfotografin und lebt in Hamburg. Nach einem Journalistikstudium in Tomsk führte sie ihr Weg über die Internationale Klasse an die Hochschule Hannover und später in den Masterstudiengang Fotografie an der Fachhochschule Dortmund. Ihre fotografische Arbeit bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle von dokumentarischer Beobachtung und persönlicher Reflexion. Sie ist Mitglied des Kollektivs DOCKS und wird von der Agentur LAIF vertreten.
Ihre Arbeiten wurden unter anderem bei den Rencontres d’Arles, FOTODOKS München, Bucharest Photofest und in der GAF Hannover ausgestellt. Für ihre Langzeitprojekte wurde sie mehrfach ausgezeichnet, zuletzt mit dem World Press Photo Award 2025 in der Kategorie Long Term Projects (Europe) und dem Otto-Steinert-Preis 2024.

In this episode of the Fotobus podcast, Paula and Felix talk to Aliona Kardash about her path to photography, her current work in Russia and her close involvement with her own family in relation to major world events. They talk about the tension between journalistic work and the transition to an increasingly subjective visual language. Aliona talks about how her way of working has changed in recent years, why personal storytelling can be political and what role collective work plays within DOCKS.
Aliona Kardash (*1990 in Siberia, Russia) is a documentary photographer and lives in Hamburg. After studying journalism in Tomsk, her path led her to the International Class at Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts and later to studying for a Master's degree in photography at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. Her photographic work operates at the interface between documentary observation and personal reflection. She is a member of the DOCKS collective and is represented by the LAIF agency.
Her work has been exhibited at Rencontres d'Arles, FOTODOKS Munich, Bucharest Photofest and GAF Hanover, among others. She has received several awards for her long-term projects, most recently the World Press Photo Award 2025 in the category Long Term Projects (Europe) and the Otto Steinert Prize 2024.
