Daniel erzählt von der Entstehung seines ersten Fotobuches, das den Kampf um den Braunkohletagebau im Rheinland beleuchtet, und von seinem aktuellen Projekt entlang der A40, das die Autobahn als sichtbare Grenze zwischen dem wohlhabenden Süden und dem benachteiligten Norden des Ruhrgebiets untersucht.
Daniel Chatard ist ein deutsch-französischer Dokumentarfotograf und visual researcher. Seine Arbeiten setzen sich mit Machtstrukturen, kollektiver Identität und Traumata auseinander, wobei er Landschaften als Träger kollektiver Erfahrungen und Erinnerungen betrachtet. Chatard beschreibt seine Herangehensweise als „involvierte Dokumentarfotografie“, in der persönliche Beziehungen zu seinen Protagonist*innen und kollaborative Prozesse eine zentrale Rolle spielen.
Seine Arbeiten wurden vielfach ausgezeichnet, u.a. mit dem World Press Photo Award, dem Deutschen Fotobuchpreis und einem Künstlerstipendium der Stadt Hamburg. Er war Finalist beim Leica Oskar Barnack Award. 2024 erschien sein FotobuchNIEMANDSLAND bei The Eriskay Connection.

In this episode of the fotobus podcast, Antonia and David talk toDaniel Chatard about his long-term projects"Niemandsland" and“Equator of Inequality”, in which he documents social conflicts and structural inequalities. Daniel talks about the process of making his first photo book, which sheds light on the struggle over opencast lignite mining in the Rhineland, and about his current project along the A40 highway, which examines the highway as a visible border between the wealthy south and the deprived north of the Ruhr region.
Daniel Chatard is a Franco-German documentary photographer and visual researcher. His work deals with power structures, collective identity and trauma, looking at landscapes as vehicles of collective experiences and memories. Chatard describes his approach as ‘involved documentary photography’, in which personal relationships with his protagonists and collaborative processes play a central role.
His work has received numerous awards, including the World Press Photo Award, the German Photo Book Award and an artist grant from the City of Hamburg. He was a finalist for the Leica Oskar Barnack Award. In 2024 his photo bookNIEMANDSLAND was published by The Eriskay Connection.
