Deconstructing Colonialism
Algeria Part IV: If You Want to Hide Something, Put it In a Book.

Hello, Bonjour and Marhaba. In this episode, I interviewed Yannis. Yannis grew up in Southern France, born to an Algerian Father and a Pied Noir Jewish mother. During this conversation, Yannis told me a lot about his experience in France. The prejudice he experienced not only as a person of color but also as a Jewish person. Yannis told me stories of his family's past in Algeria and his own experience in Marseille and in Switzerland. We concluded by talking about how strikingly similar the systematic racism of France is to that of the United States. I hope you enjoy.

Algeria Part III: 1963-2023: A Migration for Some, an Exile for Others

Hello, bonjour and marhaba.  Welcome back to my series, Deconstructing Colonialism In this episode we will be looking at the legacy of the Pied Noir within France. Within the next few decades, the last remaining Pied Noirs with the memory of French Algeria will pass away. Despite their small numbers their vocal Islamophobia and racism are felt throughout France. Let us hope that as new generations of Pied Noirs grow up, the backward views of their forefathers are not retained.
