D54 is back following our favourite policeman, Joju George, in the survival thriller Nayattu (2021). This story packs in everything - an edge-of-your seat manhunt, class dynamics that erupt violently, and a political machine that is insurmountable - all leading to an inevitable and tragic conclusion. Joju George is terrific as the world weary police officer who sees the world turning against him, and Kunchacko Boban and Nimisha Sajayan deliver deeply affecting performances that leave you shattered. This film is not for the faint of heart, but its realism, its performances, and the mesmerising cinematography and score, make it a must watch.

D54 returns to Malayalam cinema with the hugely entertaining ‘Mukunthan Unni Associates’ (2022). Putting the ‘black’ in black comedy, Vineet Srinivasan delivers a masterful performance as an ambitious and deeply sociopathic lawyer who decides that success is his only option. We discuss the film’s depiction of the legal professional, the wonderfully paced story, the terrific supporting cast, and how debut director Abhinav Nayak keeps the audience transfixed despite the increasingly heinous actions of our anatagonist. Mukunthan Unni Associates paints a relentlessly bleak view of the world. You’ll laugh, you’ll be infuriated and you’ll sit waiting for justice to arrive. It may not, but injustice has never been so enjoyable.
